  1. As the others like to say the game throws money at you and you need to duck to avoid getting hit by it (I think that was Goat actually).

I just sell my drops and do a little crafting and I make about $150m per week myself so your experiences line up perfectly with mine.
  2. I consider it this way (prices checked in game this morning):

Basilisk Quad: 110m crafted, 70m recipe
Gladiator Quad: 100m crafted, 50m recipe

Basilisk Triple: 40m crafted, 40m recipe
Gladiator triple: 45m crafted, 35m recipe

Looks like the other pieces of basilisk have come down, some of the recipes are under 5m right now, though the crafted are all going for 15m+ (recharge/hold is 25-30m). Meanwhile the off pieces of Gladiator are up since I bought mine, running in the 20s and 30s each for the recipe, and 30s to 50s each crafted.

Assuming you want the quad and triple of both, that's looking like:
    180m Basilisk's Gaze for 4 pieces crafted
290m Gladiator for 5 pieces crafted (240m for 4, but you probably want the Recharge bonus)

Overall, that would be 30% more for the PvP set except that you need 1 more piece pushing it quite a bit up. So 1 week of hero/villain merits to get a full set of basilisk, or 2 weeks to get 5 gladiators.

Still, not too shabby. Especially considering for the Glad you are looking at level 50 bonuses, and on the Basilisk level 30. The Glad exemplars lower than the Basilisk also.
    Set Bonuses:
Basilisk: 1.25% ranged def, 2% recovery, 7.5% rech
    Gladiator:
2.25% max Endurance, 2.5% damage, 7.5% recharge, 2.5% hold bonus

So in the end it also matters what you are building for. If you need that ranged defense Basilisk is going to be your set of choice. All I was going for is that if you are looking at Basilisk anyway, don't automatically rule out the PvP set assuming it is out of your price range. This one and the PBAoE are priced far below their companions (I bought 5 of the Dam/End/Rech PBAoE recipes for 2 million each) and offer some very nice benefits for their price. I'm not sure why they're cheaper, but I'm stocking up on them anyway.

    Exemping Rules??

The link posted above has all the information but it is confusing. People have explained how the set bonuses work, I'll explain the scaling.

    Short version:
The game drops your enhancement's bonuses to try and mimick the values someone of that level would have on store-bought enhancements. So below level 25 the penalties get very steep as the game tries to steer you into DO and TO levels of bonus.

    Long version:
If you have 90% damage slotted into an attack, when you exemplar down below 32, it will be reduced. There is a table at the link that explains how much. But as an example, if you ran a Positron taskforce at level 15 it would be 35%. This is calculated by taking your level 50 and comparing to the .391 listed in the table for level 15.

But this process is messy and not so simple. There are two key things that help your numbers stay up when you exemp down. #1 DE is applied AFTER the exemplar hit, not before. So if you have overslotted for something, your exemped value will be a bit higher. #2 really small bonuses, never get reduced. So if you have a Nucleus Hami-O in an attack giving 33%/33%, and you drop to level 25, it only gives 24%/24%. But if you slotted the Mako Quad, it is exactly the same, giving 18%x4 at 50 and at 25, because the value of the bonus counts as "small".

To take advantage of this second rule the guideline is:
Level 50 Quads are immune to exemping down to level 21
Level 43 Triples are immune to exemping down to level 21
Level 24 Duals are immune to exemping down to level 21

Under level 21 you have to have an original bonus of 10% or less at which point you are better off overslotting than trying to stack small bonuses.

    What it means to you:
In your case, nothing you don't do it often enough to build for it. But It means that you should expect some critical powers to be gimped.

All of your click-based Mez protection, even with three level 50 recharges slotted are unable to provide 100% uptime lower than about level 25. This means you might want to use the base enhancement station as well.

You'll need to customize your attack chains because they won't have the recharge you are used to, and because the damage may be confusing. Since individual IOs will degrade differently (ie if you have a dual or a triple or a quad, the % bonus might or might not be reduced depending on how low you exemp) so sets like Touch of Death and Obliteration will degrade differently, it's not that both ahve 95% and are both reduced to .39, since Oblit has a quad and the touch of death triples are lower than level 43, not all pieces of the set get degraded at all levels of exemping. So your powers will behave oddly, one that is middle of the road at level 50 might be your big hitter at 22.

Hope that helped and wasn't just long-winded BS. =)

I got mine for 14-30m per piece with one (I forget which) costing 42m. For a set offering the kinds of bonuses it does, that's downright amazing. Considering other PvP sets have single pieces running into the hundreds of millions, it's cheap. Hell, it's half the price of Oblit. Run your hero/villain merits for 1 week, sell a luck of the gambler for 150m and you're good to go, possibly with change left over.

    Only on launch for me.

@Cuppa, I'm on 4462 and currently without the vidiotmaps, so no more blackscreen, but getting assertion failures and having the game lock up when interacting with dialog windows.

I'm trying to pin down what causes the freeze, I'm about 50% certain it's linked to holding a move key and clicking a dialog box at the same time. But can't get into the game to test just now.

  7. I'll just chime in, my fire/fire/fire is still growing, but #1 in Arbegla's build, don't let the PvP hold set turn you off, it is surprisingly affordable. I've got two full sets in storage waiting for me.

Also, as he used in his build, adding the aoulboudn allegiance proc to your imps really makes a difference. I have it on my Fire/Psi and on my Fire/Kin controller and with and without I definitely noticed the damage output shift. Plus, I summon them enough that when it triggers on me, it's good times =)

    Boxing vs Kick

Even after slotting I wouldn't give them a slot in the powers tray, though.
Just a point of common sense to anyone following DSorrow's advice. If you do set mule Kinetic combat, do NOT use the triple, and instead slot the proc. Please be smart and save yourself 100m this way. I mention this because I bumped into someone in game with two sets of Kinetic combat (in boxing and brawl) and he'd shelled out for the triple on both and never used either.

The great thing is that you can. You don't have to pick just one. Unlike enhancements, you can swap out what you have in your alpha slot, so if you're farming stack on the damage, and if you're going up against Malta or Carnies, bring some extra endurance.

I have two characters a /fire and a /elec that use smashing haymaker, multistrike, not more than one Touch of death set, and a mishmash of reactive armor and titanium's for smashing and lethal defense. the whole build costs less than just 3 attacks slotted with kinetic combat, and while I'm not softcapped, I'm at 28% on one and 34% on the other. Thats not worthless, it is, infact, an extremely high performance jump over just SOs on a resist set. It also comes with a lot of +HP, and a decent amount of +recovery and those are also both very nice.

Defenders, Blasters, Dominators, corrupters and controllers can also very cheaply build modest recharge and ranged defense using nothing but cheap sets. Easily in the range of 40% global recharge and 25-30% ranged defense. Not anything as powerful as going all out with purples, but it'll cost vastly less and the performance jump over SOs is mind blowing for someone who'se never tried IOs before.

I can't speak for anyone else, but my issues are intermittent. Might not have any trouble for a couple days, then black screen all the time for a while, etc. So it might be a bit tricky to be sure if you are having the trouble or not unless you give it some time.

Do you have an existing data folder already with other mods in it?
One thing I noticed and was very confused about is how seemingly needlessly complex the files are inside the data folder. Everything is duplicated I think 4 times. Is that really correct?
    Here's a brief explanation:

    High level:

    Data
    Texture Library
    -Maps
    -V_Maps

Inside V_Maps there is another folder also called V_Maps with a second copy of everything inside the higher level V_Maps (except itself, so no infinite recursion).

Inside Maps there is a folder also called "Maps" with a second copy of everything inside the higher level Maps (Except itself, so no infinite recursion).

Most, but not all, of the maps are duplicated between the "Maps" and the "V_Maps".

Is this really the way it is supposed to be? for reference, this is added onto a brand-new installation of CoH, no other mods pre-existing.

Running on 2007 iMac, with Intel Core Duo processor, OSX 10.6.5, ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphics card.

I downloaded the Mac install from Vidiotmaps.com and doubleclicked it. I often but not always get a black screen on load now. No other changes or patches, started immediately after. Deleted the game, reinstalled from disk, worked fine for two weeks straight. Re-downloaded the map pack, reinstalled it. Immediately got the black screen issue again.

    Temporary fixes include:
Boot into safe mode, load a character, quit to desktop and then boot into normal mode.
Reboot computer then boot only the game and nothing else.

Likewise, Rogues and Vigilantes get twice as many normal merits the second and subsequent times they confirm their alignment.
When you switch to rogue or vigilante you lose all alignment merits (hero/villain) so spend 'em first.

When you go from rogue to hero you get normal merits. It is only "reinforcing" hero or villain that gives the alignment merit.

However, you do get 50 regular merits which you can convert to 1 alignment merit. This is universally worth doing. There is absolutely nothing you can get with reward merits that is worth more than the top buys you can get with alignment merits even including the 20 million inf conversion fee.

    Nerve Core Paragon [Very Rare]

    OR

    Musculature Total Core Revamp [Rare]

    Very difficult choice.
I'm thinking Musculature. If accuracy is an issue there are better ways to get it, and you only need a finite amount of it. At some point you have 95% to hit. Keep in mind that the rare and very rare Incarnate slots give you a level shift as well, so those +3 enemies are now only +2 or +1, and you hit them easier even if you go with Musculature. so it is very likely a lot of that accuracy is "wasted". On the other hand, there is no such thing as "enough damage" and certainly no such thing as "too much" damage.

More importantly two things to keep in mind: #1 Only the weakest abilities are coming with i19, not the rare and up. #2 the incarnate slotting isn't locked in, you can swap it out, unlike an enhancement. So the real answer is, which one do you take all the way and which one part of the way? Because you can do both, just not at the same time.

    Build Up - 1 to 3 Recharge

If you go with standard IOs instead of SOs, the recommended slotting would remain the same, in general. If you go with set IOs (even frankenslotting), then things would change a bit.

I spend a great deal of time working on builds, attack chains, and concepts while I'm off line. It's not unusual for me to devote more time to CoX in a given week offline then I do online. I just like doing it.
Excellent point. and I have a totally different reason for the same behavior. which is always fun. =)

I hate builds, I am not a min/maxer and I totally suck at figuring out what powers to use. I would and will always prefer having someone hand me a build and say "do this". But for me, I like to play and I want to enjoy the character now, not at 50. I'm not in a rush to get to 50. I have a character who is over 2 years old and only hit level 34 last weekend.

I come from a background of playing Diablo II hardcore. One death and the server deleted my character forever. It was the only way I played. Everyone else is playing for the "end goal", or looking forward to "finishing" their build. Me? I'm having fun RIGHT NOW. Either I'm having fun now, or I log out and do something else and come back when I can have fun. So the idea of waiting until 50 seems ludicrous to me. I don't know if the character will ever hit 50, or even if it does how many years away that will be. So, what do I gain by not spending the money now? It doesn't earn interest.

And to borrow Nethergoat's argument, what else am I going to spend my monopoly money on?

SOs cost more than common IOs, give a lower bonus, and they expire on you in the middle of a mission when you need them most, leaving you with zero accuracy in your key powers, or suddenly no damage or recharge. Plus you gotta find the store that sells your type, and figure out what confusing name is the right one. And you gotta do it a dozen or so times over your character's history. Screw that. Way easier to dump a few million on a good IO that I can use at 20 and I can still use at 50. Easy, done, lets me go back to playing the game. The fact that I have better bonuses than someone on SOs and I spend less time running to the store just means more time to play the game.

Now, if you think playing the game starts at 50, then sure, grind your way up. I'm here for the whole game, not the level 50 taskforces alone.
  21. That's true, but I'm thinking that there is probably someone out there who already has a level 50. But your point is solid. I know I move IOs between characters from time to time.
  22. I'd add another category, or expand on #2. That is the people who don't understand the difference in price between Kinetic combat and Smashing Haymaker, or between Obliteration and Multistrike does not equate to a similar difference in performance. People with money pay huge amounts for a small gain. Too many people start to move from SOs to IOs and think they need the best, not realizing what an enormous difference getting the low-end sets will make.

really curious here, why level 10? The major advantage of a proc is that it works regardless of the level, hence putting a level 50 stealth IO into sprint and it works at level 1.

And the main benefit of a PvP IO is that the set bonuses work regardless of your level, so put in all level 50s and keep the set bonus all the way down to level 1.

So, why a level 10 IO? Do you have a parked level 7 character who needs it?
