Map Patch/Icon Patch Issues

Hey there. I have tried everything I know how to do and I keep having this issue. Whenever I create the "data" folder in "/Applications/City of Heroes.app/Contents/Resources/transgaming/c_drive/coh" I get all kinds of graphical errors (missing textures, discoloration, even the black screen logging in). As soon as I rename or remove the "data" directory, everything returns to normal. I'd really like to keep using the map pack and icon packs though. Anyone have any idea on how to fix this?

Check the permissions on the folder to make sure they match the other folders?

There's a much easier way - the Get Info command in the Finder shows permissions at the bottom. If you use Get Info on that "data" folder, and match it to the permissions of the "coh" (or "City of Heroes", depending on your install) that would be less error-prone.

Tried all that. Sadly, no dice. Guess I'm out of luck. Thanks for the help though! Wish the Mac client wasn't so finicky.

I'll try replicating your problem on my mac to see if I can trigger it and to see if there's any work arounds.

OK I just installed the Corva assets and they seemed fine to me, the icons all were changed without any issue.

I used Safari to download the .zip file and it automatically decompressed the folder called 'data'. The weird part is that Safari called the download "texture_library" after decompressing it, which is the folder inside the 'data' folder in my downloads.

I simply dragged that into the coh folder of my gaming contents, according to the instructions here.

Was that the same way you guys installed the patches?

Note that other methods of unzipping or installation my create folders with hidden files/meta data inside.

I downloaded the Mac install from Vidiotmaps.com and doubleclicked it. I often but not always get a black screen on load now. No other changes or patches, started immediately after. Deleted the game, reinstalled from disk, worked fine for two weeks straight. Re-downloaded the map pack, reinstalled it. Immediately got the black screen issue again.

Temporary fixes include:
Boot into safe mode, load a character, quit to desktop and then boot into normal mode.
Reboot computer then boot only the game and nothing else.

The funny thing is that I didn't have to create data folder, the decompressed archive was named "data" already so I just moved it into the coh folder and then launched the game. My installation didn't have a data folder to begin with.

Do you have an existing data folder already with other mods in it?

I had to create mine, with Corva's Inspiration pack, the Vidiotmaps pack (which works now, oddly enough) and Corva's glass enhancement mod. The only thing not working is Corva's power icon mod.


My guides:Dark Melee/Dark Armor/Soul Mastery, Illusion Control/Kinetics/Primal Forces Mastery, Electric Armor
"Dark Armor is a complete waste as a tanking set."

Now that I know how the game uses icons via OpenGL, I wouldn't advise using icon replacements even on a PC (unless you enjoy borderline instability).

Just a small size difference per icon between the stock ones and the replacement ones is enough to cause huge video ram corruption. People who use them on Windows likely crash once in a while and don't even realize why. The Mac client is even more sensitive to video ram issues.

No issues with either one, so I'm not sure why anyone else is having any issues.

Testing was done on a 2008 Mac Pro 10.6.5 with a 5870. Only thing I noticed was the cursor was the Mac cursor in full screen but changed to the CoH cursor (albeit colour inverted) when swapping to windowed, but that is likely the change to something else since removing the data folder still made the Mac cursor behaviour stay.

One thing I noticed and was very confused about is how seemingly needlessly complex the files are inside the data folder. Everything is duplicated I think 4 times. Is that really correct?
Here's a brief explanation:

High level:

Data
Texture Library
-Maps
-V_Maps

Inside V_Maps there is another folder also called V_Maps with a second copy of everything inside the higher level V_Maps (except itself, so no infinite recursion).

Inside Maps there is a folder also called "Maps" with a second copy of everything inside the higher level Maps (Except itself, so no infinite recursion).

Most, but not all, of the maps are duplicated between the "Maps" and the "V_Maps".

Is this really the way it is supposed to be? for reference, this is added onto a brand-new installation of CoH, no other mods pre-existing.

Running on 2007 iMac, with Intel Core Duo processor, OSX 10.6.5, ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphics card.

I can't speak for anyone else, but my issues are intermittent. Might not have any trouble for a couple days, then black screen all the time for a while, etc. So it might be a bit tricky to be sure if you are having the trouble or not unless you give it some time.

Hmm...how often does it happen when it does? Does it bite you during the same play session after a while, or does it only happen when you launch the game?

The black screen phenonmeon occurs when an incorrect OpenGL feature set is detected by Cider. It does that sometimes, and I still haven't narrowed down what triggers it, except that it seems to happen a lot less often since 2 issues ago.

The only suggestion I have is to make sure you're using both the latest Snow Leopard and the latest CoH for Mac build (4462), if only because it's not giving me those kinds of problems.

Only on launch for me.

@Cuppa, I'm on 4462 and currently without the vidiotmaps, so no more blackscreen, but getting assertion failures and having the game lock up when interacting with dialog windows.

I'm trying to pin down what causes the freeze, I'm about 50% certain it's linked to holding a move key and clicking a dialog box at the same time. But can't get into the game to test just now.

This is actually my fault... when building the installer, the Install Maker software went stupid... When I tested it, it didn't cause any issues so I left it as it was because I was tired of messing with it. IF I can get this working again, I'll fix that.
