  1. I'm with the others on this one...

OP, something clearly isn't right with your toon or playstyle (from an effectiveness
    standpoint).

I'm primarily a solo player. My PB experiences greatly differ from yours.

I solo my PB on +1/0. It doesn't even *have* lightform... I run a forms build
(Nova/Dwarf along the lines of the guide I wrote way back in I-4).

It solos fine. To be sure, it isn't godly like my SS/WP Brute (who solos Pylons),
it doesn't put out as much damage as my Fire Blaster (PB is typically more survivable
than him though), but it's definitely *not* my worst solo toon (by a long shot).

In terms of tactics, I buff up, stealth in, and blow everything to smithereens in Nova,
and switch to Dwarf on the rare occasions when the crap hits the fan, and
typically only use human form to scout and buff up...

In terms of build - look at Frankenslotting - full capability, minimum slots.

Use inspies as needed - more will drop.

Pay attention to the spawn, Prioritize the Targets, Manage Aggro -- No Problems.

Khelds definitely have issues (stemming mostly from some debatable design
goals initially), but they can definitely solo without any major problems.

PS> Oh, and a PB can be a pretty nasty customer in PvP (with a good build and
    sharp mind at the controls)

    Yep.

One of the very first things my friend said to me when we discussed
it over lunch on Friday was: "Well, there goes 2XP weekends - those will
    purchasable now..."

I'd expect all sorts of expendable commodities to become available thru
    the store.

For the most part, I'm not too angst-ridden about them as they're helpful,
but not mandatory (compared to unlocking ATs, some contact, zone or trial
    for instance).

That said, I understand Sam's complaint of it giving direct advantage for money.

Of course, (sadly) that is typically the actual point of the F2P model.
If you pay, you get better stuff (advantage) over those who don't.

My fear is the opposite... not that somebody else can have a PvE advantage
by throwing money at it, but that I will be prevented from content if I *don't*
    throw (more) money at it.

That is the showstopper for me if/when it occurs.

  5. For me? Very Little.

I've yet to buy a booster pack, server transfer or respec. They're optional,
and while possibly cool, I don't need them to play the game - they're worth
    $0 to me.

That's the problem I have with their business model change...

Ten minutes after they ask me to pay for *needed* content to play their game,
it gets uninstalled... $180 annually for a *game* is already plenty.

As long as they want to sell me "optional" stuff that wouldn't be part of
typical content releases, or actually needed to play... Fine.

But if I have to pay extra $ above the $15 to get a zone, contact, or similar
content that would have been an expected part of a "normal" release,
    they can cram it.

    Unfortunately, that's not an if -- it's a when...

    Regards,
    4

PS> That may sound like a harsh stance to take, but I'm not very optimistic on
the liklihood of this turning out well - there's just too much precedent to
believe otherwise... It has nothing to do with the influx of freebs, and
everything to do with NCsoft (eventually) nickel & diming me incessantly
over and above the $15 monthly fee. I'm hanging in till they prove that
pessimism warranted, but I doubt it'll take them long to do exactly that.
  6. I can't see the builds in Mids just yet (I'm at work).

What I can say is, that while I understand the "cap" mentality, and I'm quite
familiar with Dech's guide on the topic, it's less critical for SS/WP than just
about any other toon. Here's why (based on my own L50 SS/WP Brute).

Unlike most AT's that have to focus on def, this guy doesn't need to - he can
layer that s/l def, with 50%+ of res, with high regen (80HP/sec with 1 mob
    on mine, for instance).

Taken together, the res/reg will easily offset the slightly less than capped def.
While most other AT's can't pull that off, *this* guy can.

I can tell you from actual practice that my SS/WP Brute, with his uncapped
def can *park* at a Pylon and I can go to lunch and rest assured he'll be alive
    when I get back.

By contrast, my capped SS/Inv cannot. Even though it *is* capped, the 5% chance
to be hit, along with high dmg from a Pylon, ensures that Dull Pain will be *needed*
at some point, and I better be there to push it when it is...

To be certain, the Pylon can't kill either of them, but I can take a comfortable
    nap while using the SS/WP...

Defense is one thing, but practical Immunity is even better.

The absolute most important thing is to have a character you enjoy. I've only had one or two "Flavour of the Month" characters get to 50 because, no matter how effective they may be, if they're not my playstyle, they're not fun, and it's hard to go back to them.

Once you've got a character you enjoy, start doing Story Arcs. You can even go to Ouroboros and redo favorites or fill in ones you missed while levelling. Story Arcs are important to the soloer because of the Arc Completion bonus - some of them are quite large.

If you find your character to be fairly survivable, you can also consider increasing your difficulty. The best setting depends on both you and your character - a scrapper may want to fight higher level enemies, and opt for +2/x1, a brute may want more enemies to boost his fury and use +1/x4, while a blaster with many AoEs may choose to hover over groups of -1/x8 for numerous quick kills. Whichever you pick, if you can survive it, it's quicker than the default.
    /this.

I am predominantly a solo player. I have several L50's, a handful of which are moving
    on to incarnate trials.

    Enjoying your toon is critical.

Take time to read the stories - some are quite good.

Run at difficulty settings that are manageable but challenging - it'll level you faster
and make the accomplishments sweeter along the way.

Set "mini-goals" - ie. a goal for a play session. Maybe one session it's getting
the 5 tips. On another, maybe it's finishing a contact's story arc. On a third,
    maybe it's running tf X...

In short, come to your play session with a simple goal that you intend to complete
    during that session.

Team when it appeals to you, but don't spend a play session waiting for a team. Make
some progress on a mini-goal instead of waiting around.

String enough of those mini-accomplishments together, and ... Ding - L50...

Finally, it's easy to get a toon to L50 if that is all you care about - several folks
have done it in under 30 hrs or so (to the exclusion of all else)...

It's far more interesting and fun (imho) to enjoy the journey along the way... YMMV

  8. Given that I'm already an elitist snob soloist the VIP server will just be an
extra server where I can put new toons.

As for the freebs? No issue at all - I'll just do what I already do now...

Default settings of "Decline All Invites", and "/hide" on all but my 4 incarnates.

    No Problem.

The part of this that *does* concern me is not what the rednames are saying
now (about keeping all your stuff etc.), but what they'll do a year down the
road, if/when they start wanting to charge to enter new zones or trials, or
make certain enhancements obtainable *only* through payment, rather
than the market, a-merits, or r-merits as it is today.

Right now, they're saying many of the "right" things, but I also recall them
telling us that ED wasn't a nerf.

So, we're VIPs when this all goes live, but I have a premonition that it
won't be long before they'll be trying to pry extra cash out of us as well.

If it's for optional stuff, fine (I haven't bought booster packs either), but if
it's for actual game progression stuff - enhs, ATs, powers, trials and the
like ...see ya.... (ED cost them 2 yrs of my business - F2P could cost them
    all of it).

Considering these guys can't get a simple option switch to work right
(Useful Salvage Warning, Market Fees, just to name two) or run a BBS
smoothly (its TEN months now, for the logout bug), I don't have very
much confidence in the outcome of the "Freedom" experiment.

There are (imho) literally 100's of ways to mangle it for the game and their
customers, and only a few ways to make it work smoothly, and tbh, an
influx of freebs is the very least of the issues in my book.

I'm not planning to change anything I'm doing now, and I'll hope for the best,
but I'll also prepare for the worst.

As always, time will give us the real answer.

I'm with these guys. 4 hours or less is pretty much typcial. Like them,
much less if I run back-to-back trials, or switch among a few alts.

You can test it for yourself quite simply. Log into a mission, go somewhere
safe. Leave it alone for x hours (4 & change is the max for me). I've tested
it on 3 different PCs (on my network), and a friend of mine has the same
issue on 2 of his (Win XP-SP3 for me, Win 7 for him)

I initially discovered that test while running a mish prior to a dinner-date.
After getting some gf aggro, I decided to just leave the toon in mission
    and finish it up later.

So, date, and a movie, and came back to a crashed box. For me, it's 100%
repeatable in 4 hours or less of just parking in a mish.

    Definitely less, doing actual stuff...

So, my take is, yep, memory leaks abound, once again...

EDIT: I lied Ok, actually, I misremembered the exact details (It had been quite
awhile since I first stumbled into the situation).

The scenario I outlined above differs from what I *actually* did in two key ways.

1> It was an Ouroboros Arc, (Envoy of Shadows, I think???) not a simple/standard
    mission.
2> I didn't park IN mission as previously noted. I completed the mission I was in,
and simply parked in Zone, expecting to head to the next mission when I returned
    from dinner/movie.

SO, the updated test (which I did confirm again last night) is:

1> Grab an Ouroboros arc (I'm not sure the arc itself actually matters)
2> Park your toon in a zone somewhere and leave it logged in (I'm not sure the
zone matters either - I did it in King's Row last night)

3> In 3-4 hours, welcome to City of Crash...

Sorry for inadvertantly misconstruing the original scenario sequence and any
confusion that may have caused... My Bad... (attribute it to advancing years)

  11. I don't know much about farming, so this thread was an interesting read, thanks,
but the one thing that does catch my eye about L22 is that is where you can
    begin to slot SO's.

In toons that I run normally, I notice a scaling effect (never quantified) at that
point where mobs seem, or may actually be, more difficult.

My speculation is that mobs ratchet up a bit there, probably due to the devs
expecting/anticipating players to start slotting SO's (a big jump in capability).

Not sure if that has any bearing here, but thought I'd mention it.

There's a guide out there to help you with common abbreviations.

It's probably a little dated (it was written in 2009), but the frequent/common
    stuff will be there.

    A couple more recent additions:

H/VM's: Hero, Villain Alignment Merits (you'll also see a-merits)
BAF: Behavioral Adjustment Facility - a location in Praetoria *and* an incarnate
    task force.
WTF/WSF: Weekly Task Force / Weekly Strike Force

Another, not so recent, but not in the guide.

    IIRC: If I recall correctly

No doubt there are plenty more, but that's a good start...

    Flipping?

To my way of thinking, that depends on what you're flipping, how active it is,
and how low your lowball bid actually is?

So, if, for example my bid is ~50% of last 5 on, say Hecatomb Damage, that
could take several days. If it's 50% on something like Glad Armor 3%, it probably
    *never* fills.

If it's 50% on Masterwork Weapons (Common Salvage) it probably fills in an hour
    or less.

So, there's no hard, fast, rule on it, and you really need to know how the
    particular niche you're working behaves.

    Huh?
Not sure why you're confused by my response. Right now we have a power
that summons a pseudo-pet, and (mostly) goes Boom when a target is
    in range... Pretty simple code.

Without going back to see which suggestions belong to which posters, there
are summoned pseudo-pets which partially go Boom, summon still more
pseudo-pets, and/or buff bots, for varying effects and lengths of time, among

So... Interesting ideas, but I'm fairly sure that somewhere in there it stops
being "simple code"... At that point, given the low number of played
Khelds, I further question the liklihood that the Devs would jump on board
    with those.

Hence my far simpler suggestion - make it a real pet with limited MM
control to overcome the idiotic AI they currently use... <shrug> YMMV.

seem a little cumbersome, particularly from a dev coding standpoint, with
    re-summonings, and or buffs, etc.

I like the ideas, but question the liklihood of a practical implementation.

For myself, I'd be quite pleased if they simply behaved like an actual pet with
an MM style interface where I could point at a target (of my choosing) and
say "Fido, attack --> *that* guy"...

The biggest problem I have with them is their AI - it's been abysmal since day 1.

    Regards,

  19. I'm reluctant to step into this fracas, but it never stopped me before so...

I like a lot of the ideas here, and I hope the Devs will give them consideration.
I'm especially in favor of a boost for soloists, clicky buffs being able to be used in
forms, and pretty much anything that would improve the "Village Idiots" (Seekers)
    for PB's.

Adjusting form transitions would be very welcome, and if we could reduce recharge
times for White Dwarf somewhat, I might even become giddy.

I'd love to see them rethink Quantum Flight. I haven't taken it on a PB since
they changed it way back when (I6?), but that's probably a pipedream.

As far as the Bill / Geko debate, I'm in partial agreement with both sides.

Like Bill, I'm vehemently opposed to changing/losing KB across the board. No, Heck No.

However, for Solar Flare, I'm completely in Geko's (and others) camp - KD/KU
is a much better choice for a host of reasons: Melee focus in human form,
thematic equivalence to FootStomp, and simple team dynamics to name just 3.

To Bill, I'd ask you to compromise a little. You listed *one* scenario that
works for *you* - but there are many other cases where KD is distinctly better
than KB, particularly in a team setting, and KD would certainly be much more
palatable for the majority of the playerbase in those cases.

That said, I wouldn't want to eliminate the option for you, but I think scrounging a
slot or two to have an effect you deem vital is a reasonable exchange. <shrug>.

Anyway, interesting thread - I'd love to see the Devs put some thought and effort
into Khelds - they're overdue for it, comparatively speaking, in today's game.

In a way, you're making my point exactly.

1> Now that fitness is inherent, part of that goes away immediately now.

So this isn't so much a question about how to build a character itself, but
rather the theory or know-how or whatnot that goes into character builds. I
like this game, and other. I like a lot of things about this genre of games, but the
one place there's always been a disconnect is character creation/progression.
I'll offer a few thoughts on the topic.

First, is mindset - this is a game and *should* be fun. So, build a character
you like - something about it should interest and intrigue you... Don't make a
toon simply to make a toon. Have an interest and reason to create your character.

Fun is always a matter of perception, not a matter of build - a twinked-out
build can be fun, but it's not exclusive. I have a toon that has never left
the tutorial, that I still enjoy now and then - I have a fun healer capped at L20
that only buffs folks in lowbie zones and a L2 character that never leaves the market.
Fun isn't cast in stone - it's always a matter of perspective and perception.

Second - Expectations. There are VAST differences between a character, that
is effective against standard game content, a PvP toon, an AV or Pylon soloer.
It is extremely rare, if not impossible, to have a character that excels in all
of those areas (multiple builds notwithstanding). When you make a toon, give
some thought to what you expect it to achieve. Learn its role - its strengths,
and its weaknesses - Leveling is really the discovery of those things for a toon.

    Find its area of fun.

Third - Effort. How much effort are you planning to put into this toon, in terms
of play time, and enhancement value? Is it your primary toon? Do you plan to
play it often, or just now and then, or only with a particular friend/group? That in
turn may help you decide how much you want to spend to enhance it. Also
bear in mind that builds can be changed, or improved, fairly easily with respecs.
Don't sweat any minor issues too much.

For a standard character that runs PvE content well at normal difficulty settings,
SO's or common IO's work just fine and cost the least.

That said, you'll still need 18-20M inf over its career to equip it with SO's.

If you have greater aspirations for it, you'll want IO's and sets and cost will rise
accordingly (a decent Frankenslotted build is appx 100M-500M depending).

You'll also need to put some time into crafting and marketing, or running tf's
and such to help you enhance the character adequately.

If you're creating an AV soloist, Pylon wrecker, or PvP master, it costs
billions (my Pylon soloing Brute has 8-10 billion worth of goodies, and my PvP
stalker is probably worth about 2-4 billion). You'll need plenty of market effort,
and content running, to get near those levels typically.

Fourth - The "how-to". For most toons, I typically follow the simplest guidelines
a friend told me way back in I1. These are very general, but still helpful:

    * You won't go far wrong taking the character's Primary Powers early and often.
Then, look to take Secondary powers that interest you along the way.

    * You should have some way to get around quickly and easily (In I1 days, it was
a travel power). These days with Jet Packs, and Bonus Packs, options abound.

    * Play it enough to begin to understand its basic role(s) and hole(s).

    * Fill in the holes with Pool Powers to help you do whatever the toon is expected to do.

    * Slot out your perceived core/role powers (5 or 6 slots). Put 3 or 4 in supplemental,
helpful, or often-used powers. Leave the rest at 1 or 2 slots. Slot to maximize
the primary attributes of the powers you slot (g. Acc/Dmg in attacks, heal in Heals, etc).

That will pretty much always get you a useful toon for the normal game.

    Beyond that?

    * get Mids' - it is an awesome piece of software for theoretical tinkering
    with builds.

    * read Guides - even outdated ones will clue you in on awesome (or sucky)
must have (must avoid) powers. Current ones will also give you helpful advice
on IO's, and sets, binds, etc.

    * Post your build in the appropriate AT forum. Plenty of folks will gladly make
helpful suggestions for your build if you, at least, go to the effort to make and
post the Mids' plan of it.

I'll hope you'll pardon the length of this post, but even more importantly, I hope
the ideas in here will help you with future characters. Good Luck, and most
    importantly, have fun.

    Regards,
    4

PS> You'll have to define "broken" for me. It's *hard* to make a truly broken
character (my first toon - a blaster, had 3 of the 4 travel powers, and just
a few of his secondary powers, and still solo'd most of the way to L50 in
I1-I3 days). Clearly, "broken" means results != expectations for you.
Getting a better understanding of your expectations may well be the
    biggest help.

    Lack of Alpha

In my experience, the basic T1 Alpha is very simple to get.

First, you get a shard from the Ramiel Arc.

If you run an ITF, you'll get a Nictus Fragment as an end-reward, and probably
    5-8 shards along the way.

That in itself will get you the basic Spiritual Alpha using 8 shards to craft the
two other components. I did this for my Brute last week... One ITF - done.

LGTF is about the same - you get a Hero DNA and probably enough shards to
make the other two components. Additionally, you get Vanguard Merits, and
150 of those buys you a G'rai Matter component.

Need extra shards or Vanguard merrits? - A mothership raid will get you plenty
    of both.

ITF, LGTF, and Mothership raids are happening ALL the time...

Any two of those would virtually guarantee your T1 Alpha in short order, and
if luck smiles on you at all, just one can get it done.

Not even counting the new iStuff...

PS> Of course, T2-T4 Alpha stuff takes more of the same things, but imo,
it's the easiest of the iStuff to get.

    Me too.

It's even more problematic if I'm running the latest Mids' and CoH on the same
PC (although CoH will still crash on its own with nothing else running).

Methinks they've introduced another memory leak or two or a few, recently.

    Drop Rate?

Actually, you can do so at L47+.

Even though the recipes themselves are locked at L50, any mob that can
drop a recipe *usuable* by a L50 character can also drop a purple recipe.

bases I have, all of my storage racks are organized that way, around the room.
Oh, and actually, you don't need an empty rack to organize it that way - just a L50
with 70 or so salvage slots. That will cover 2 racks worth of shuffling...

Of course, I'm also one of those who has his inspirations neatly stacked and
organized too... F1 is *always* Heal - on every toon I have.. Lucks are
in F2 early (or in F3 on toons that carry 2 columns of heal), and F5 is
either End/Cabs or Break Frees - again depending on toon).

You can say it - I can be distinctly OCD in some areas.

As for the OP's post, I'm more in the IronBlade camp. I have only two toons
with PortaCrafter (tm), one hero, and one villain (back before the market consolidation).

Even then, I can count on one hand the total times (cumulative) that they've
used it in the past year ... Mostly an unnecessary waste of time/effort unless
you want it for the badge, or you're the main supplier for an S/VG.

    Cheers,
