Quote:Seconding this post. My own AR/MM is a murderous deathmachine and has been from the getgo. All kinds of tools at your disposal and AoE like nobody's business. The only complaint I have about the combo is that it ruined all other blaster sets for meI've got a 50 AR/Mental and every level was crazy fun. The four cones + M30 Grenade are so satisfying to fire off... and /Mental has all sorts of little tricks to it that make it a blast.
As a Corruptor or Defender, though, I have no idea. That's just my experience. -
Fire/dark! Absolute murder. It's one of those combos that starts off great and only gets better from there. I would assume sonic/dark is great too, less AoE but also way easier on the ol' blue bar, with the addition of -res to help out your -dam due to some oddball mechanics.

Quote:/bind shift+lbutton “powexecname Teleport”I was wondering how do you make an marcro for Shadow Step on my Warshade. I do understand there's an answer on the forums somewhere but I could not find it.
It would help me teleport faster.
That's what I use for Teleport. Hold down left shift, click anywhere, you teleport there with no need to place the reticle. Works a treat! Replace Teleport with Shadow Step or the correct name of the power (not sure because I have never used a kheld). -
I have been here a long time and this year has been the best year ever for me and my wife as far as teaming goes. I don't know what the raw numbers are for subs or population on a given server but the game sure seems to be doing well from my point of view. Besides like someone else said if you are playing the game you are probably in an instance somewhere so you are not gonna show up just lollygagging around the city proper.
-
Quote:Anything you enjoy paired with anything she enjoys. I've done similar things with my wife and it always turns out that any of our characters works a treat with any other character. To avoid frustration I'd recommend not pairing two low-damage ATs or powersets with one another, but even so pretty much everything in the game goes with everything else. My own experiences have shown me that the optimal number of tanks in a duo (and usually a team) is zero, but your mileage may vary and if you enjoy tanks then by all means tank away.I'm not looking for min maxing necessarily, so much as a duo that's fairly relaxed and pretty fun to play. It doesn't need to be a tank/healer combo or anything like that, but if it is and it's a fun one let me know.
(In general just list AT's and the power sets you would recommend for duoing) -
Serum is worthless. Don't take it. If the base recharge was half what it is, it might be a maybe.
-
Absolutely 100% this. Besides, there's no problem teaming in this game. If someone has difficulties teaming up they need to get their grownup panties on and start teams or join some globals.
The talk about what constitutes a PUG is kinda interesting. All my teams lately are formed from Virtue's excellent global channels, and only in very rare cases do I use the search function. I have never thought of the teammates from global channels as PUG members, but anytime I pick someone up from search I think of them as PUG members. I guess I run mixed-breed pug teams
Yes! I hate forming teams or joining a team and having someone ask "who is tanking" or "do we have heals." The entire idea of these roles is irrelevant in CoX. -
Totally true! My wife and I argue about things like the relative importance of different paradigms of psychological research or whether we should go see one movie or the other. If we argued about money, politics, religion, or whether we want kids, that's a whole different kettle of fish. I guess what I was trying to say is that it's silly to make a hobby a dealbreaker in a relationship.
-
Yeah all that is true too! The OP didn't seem to care about anything but hobbies, so that's all I addressed. That's what I meant when I said that hobbies aren't the glue that holds a relationship together. Interests, hobbies, all that is pretty peripheral. However it's nice to have something you differ in opinion on, other wise what are you gonna argue about?!
-
What works: meet someone, get to know them, discover you share some interests, find that those interests support what you want in the relationship.
What doesn't: Decide you must must MUST have a partner who does X or has Y trait and nothing less will do.
I've been with my wife for ten years. When we got together, I had no idea she was a gamer. As we got to know each other that became a common hobby for us. Also, if gaming was the focus of her life (or mine!) our relationship would have died real fast. Hobbies aren't the glue that makes a relationship work. -

Quote:The servers are down. Not locked due to population, but down. These things happen. It will get fixed. No, the folks in charge are not off for the weekend. Have no fear. Remain calm.So the people that had to move to a server with more people so they could find a team moved to the servers in the top 3-4 spots. And now they're locked....hmmm...
*wanders off bemused that someone thinks Guardian is in the top 3-4 populated servers*
edit:
Quote:Maybe try one of the servers in the lower half of the load listing?- Last server you selected
- Lowest current logged in population server
- . . .
- . . .
- Highest current logged in population server

This is absolutely true and I want to point out that 99% of the time that "80% of the survivabilty" is more than survivable enough. Unless you're hellbent on rolling out blueside I'd go brute.
-
Just want to post that I play redside on Virtue and the combination of global channels, a friendly attitude, and willingness to *gasp!* form my own teams for SFs and the like have left me unable to log in without getting multiple tells asking me what I have planned for the night. In the hour I logged in so far today, I joined a speed ITF and declined two invites to mission teams and a themed LGTF, all redside. This is completely apart from the BNY boredom and spam. So, if you like redside, don't fear Virtue.

Quote:Merit purchases, most likely. Outright buying a recipe gives you the choice of level. It'd be nice if the level slider worked for random rolls too. I'm suffering similar issues filling out some Kinetic Combats on a character.I'm personally trying to get a Celerity or Unhindered Leap +Stealth. Some of these are showing dates in 2008 as one in the five. It's just a Celerity Stealth. I sold a level 50 a few weeks ago.
But what I'm looking at is something in the 20s.
I've started just filling all my WW slots with bids on the recipes and crafted before I log out.
Do the devs just decide that the drop rate on these things should dry up? Do they hate these enh?
And how do these pie-in-the-sky Fire/Kin babies's builds get made? Hell, every one has five LotG +7.5.
So, I guess my real question, rather than just a rant, is how do people get these things that just aren't on the market? Or do they?
As far as drops go, the trouble is that so little time is spent in that level range that there's not a lot of opportunity for those sort of goodies to drop, whereas at 50 you have all the time in the world. -
-
Forcefields throw their buffs every four minutes and can be done anytime you have a sec. If you need a forgiving AT that doesn't need fast fingers, FF/* defender is your go-to hero. You can make binds so that you just press keypad buttons in sequence to shield all your teammates. On the flip side, avoid kinetics, as it's a constant buttonmashing targetswitching twitchfest, if it's played right
If damage dealing is your bag, I will second the scrapper idea. Either Willpower or Super Reflexes, because both involve toggling on your abilities and going to town. Regen would be the least desirable due to its reliance on timely use of click abilities. -
Quote:What do you mean by increasing the softcap? The soft cap on defense is just the point where further defense doesn't affect the rate at which you get hit. The only way to "increase the softcap" is to lower the minimum chance to hit below 5%, which would actually make defense builds even stronger. If the minimum chance to hit suddenly became 1%, making the soft cap 49% defence, my SR scrapper would reach that in short order and be even more of an unstoppable god than he is at 45%.Could see some like this happening. But maybe not in the IO's but rather an increase on the softcap, thinking that would be the easiest way.
Inv, WP, DA, Regen, Fire sitting at the softcap. Won't suprise me at all if they do some rework on defense.
I expect any changes to IO set defense bonuses to involve making it harder to reach the softcap by lowering the defense bonuses. However I am not sure that IO set defense bonuses will ever change, because for every zany WP scrapper with capped S/L defense there are another ten who think that slotting six defense buff SOs in Heightened Senses is a worthwhile investment. Leveraging set bonuses is overrepresented on the forums compared to the general population of the game, and there's a ton of players out there who just don't use sets at all.
To address the OP: hell yes brutes are fun! I am a slave to my fury bar and I like it that way -
OK well first off the game is quite lively on any given server, with allowances for time of day and day of the week (Tuesday at 2 PM is not the busiest hour
). Even on the smaller/lower population servers things are going on at all hours. On the busy servers you can quite literally find yourself fighting off invitations to mission teams, task forces, themed events, PVP teams/temp power missions, and lord knows what else. Some things to do to ensure a good experience, should you decide to join us permanently:
- Look up and join your server's global channels. There's almost certainly a few to help you team and have a good time.
- Post on your server's boards. Look for events.
- When you have a good time with someone, ask to global them! I've made a lot of great friends just in the past few weeks this way, and we mutually see each other out for teaming.
- Form your own teams! This is a biggie. The star doesn't bite. Just make a team, take anyone at all, and go forth and conquer. Remember, in this game, you don't need a tank/healer/dps combo to win everything forever. Pretty much any team makeup works for 99% of the game content.
Although Virtue and Freedom have the largest populations, the other servers are very nice, very cozy communities. The most populated can be a curse at times, Freedom has a history of being locked out during some events due to high population. I play mainly on Virtue, but I keep characters on other servers as well. Remember you are never locked to a server!
Hope you sign on with us OP, it's a great time and well worth the entry fee. If you poke around and look at people's info ingame you will see a great many of us with five years or more paid time in the game. We wouldn't stick around if the game was trash. You know you wanna join us! -
But Cat how am I supposed to purple out my warshade???
Seriously OP the rare stuff is rare for all kinds of reasons, drops are rare and the cost reflects that. You don't need them anyway. -
Quote:I agree to a point but let's not kid ourselves here: 99.5% of this game is trivial at worst. You can faceroll your way through almost every part of the game, and the parts you can't, well, everyone knows what those are. If the team splits in two during, say, some random mission on some random TF, it's not a huge deal. If the scrapper runs off and starts his own personal war with the next spawn over, well, he wouldn't have done so if he didn't think he could handle it.I think that 'discrimination' is maybe not the best word choice. There is a larger issue here.
The fact is that teams strategize. Teaming is not (usually) about 8 people running around randomly on a map clicking buttons. It's about people trying to synergize their efforts to accomplish a common goal. Even the most disorganized teams come with basic expectations of behavior.
For example, if a player decides his 'playstyle' is charging ahead into un-aggroed groups and dragging them back to the unprepared team, he can't very well bemoan being "discriminated" against when the team objects.
I had to smile at your example. I have a WP/ice tank that has been shelved for a long time, and part of the reason he is shelved is because his ice patch power doesn't get along well with his pacted partner's immobilizes. I guess in the final analysis lots of powers and power effects don't play nicely together, but what is to be done? Do we demand others change to fit our playstyles? Or do we adapt and work from there? Sure, the fire cages is negating the knockdown from ice slick. However, the faster killing is providing a different kind of mitigation. It seems to be about ego, and how although everyone can see how their abilities are infringed upon, they are unable to see how the infringing abilities are also contributing. -
Quote:Haha, no she has never played a tanker and nor will she wait for anything! She's my wifeWaiting...for the Brute...BLASPHEMY!!!
Are you sure your Brute wasn't a tanker in their past life?Trouble we run into with other Brutes is that they invariably seem to want the team to stick together and nobody get ahead of them; maybe those brutes were tankers before! What I was trying to say is that it appears that the people who play melee ATs and hate knockback seem to do so because they think that their playstyle and play speed is the correct one, and nobody should slow them down or outpace them. However I didn't mean to attack any individual, and I apologize for coming off as an *******.
I hear what you are saying with the use of KB. It's just the availability heuristic that is making me think of melees, but as was pointed out by others, scattering mobs with AoE is a pain for lots of folks. My assault rifle blasters just love (rolleyes) seeing someone blow a nicely aligned cone apart. I probably posted in haste and in anger and I apologize for coming off as an *******. However I do maintain that I will never tell someone not to use their powers as they see fit, once again barring obviously obnoxious play.
Quote:Originally Posted by OcastaThe issue is, as I mentioned in my previous post, that KB can easily reach a point where it is simply not helpful. -
Seems whenever this argument comes up on the forums, two things become clear:
- Lotta people think their tank (or brute!) is the most important player on the team, and start arranging their viewpoint to support this idea
- Lotta people (often the same people) expect others to alter their playstyle so the tank/brute doesn't have to
Now these things are always couched in terms of efficiency or best use of abilities or team safety, but I guarantee you the guy getting told not to use certain of his powers, or to use them only at certain times, is not having nearly as good of a time as he could. I especially resent it because no KB user ever tells the melees how to play so as to maximize their enjoyment. Imagine if I told the brute to make sure to start fights only in corners so Hurricane could be used more easily, or never to start fights on platforms or mezzanines so I don't need to worry about Tornado knocking things out of line of sight. That would be ridiculous but somehow it's OK for the tank or brute to tell me not to use an awesome debuff like Hurricane because he can't figure out how to select another target and beat it down.
Just to run an example counter to what's being presented here, I run on a team with one fixed member, an ss/wp brute who is not heavily IO'd. I join her with whatever fills out the team, and we run eight man mixed teams often in the RWZ. She prefers to run on ahead and start fights, and any help is appreciated but not required. She would far rather see me knocking stuff all over with my stormie and making a mess than look at her fury bar and sigh because it could be 1% higher had Lightning Storm not knocked two mobs away from her eight man spawn. If others using their powers interferes with her style of fighting, she goes off and starts another fight and we all win. Same if she is just not needed for a spawn; if I have it all locked up with Seeds and Creepers, why would she stick around when there is more beatings to be dispensed just down the hall? Everyone has a good time, the Darkfender gets to solo her own spawn, the brute is off beating on what looks like fifteen Rikti at once, and I am praying to God that Seeds lands on this one better than the last. Sure seems more appealing than everyone waiting until the brute is ready and then making sure that nobody steps on her toes while she does her thing.
Bottom line is of course your game your good times. Sure seems better to let everyone play as they like and if something isn't working the way you like, alter your playstyle or leave rather than telling others to alter theirs or leave. I cant remember the last time I kicked someone from a team if I ever have, and if I did it sure wouldn't be because my scrapper had to select a different target. Seriously, we are not talking about the difference between failure and success, we are talking about tiny differences in effectiveness here. Barring completely obnoxious crap like putting Gale on auto and /following the tank or something like that, it's really not that bad for melees assuming you have the tiniest amount of consideration and patience. Except for Solar Flare and the people who use it, that is beyond the pale
