SS/SD Brute or SD/SS Tank?

I'm really wanting a to roll up a character with both Super Strength and Shield Defense. My problem is that I can't decide whether to make a Brute or a Tanker.

It looks like a Shield/SS Tank will have plenty of offensive power, have better protection with Shield being in the primary, and have better energy management due to Body Mastery's Conserve Power and Physical Perfection.

A SS/Shield Brute, on the other hand, looks like it'll have damage off the scale, but I know from my time playing an Elec/Shield brute and previous experience with a WP/SS Tanker that both sets are kind of high on endurance use, especially if I add in Tough and Weave and shoot for the softcap.

I'd really appreciate a second opinion.

I wouldn't say the protection is automatically better just because the tanker has SD in his primary. After all, the defense softcap is the softcap. It doesn't get much better than that. Sure, you will have better resistance values, but the brute will kill faster.

If you are all that concerned about end. usage, perhaps rolling the tank would be a better idea. Stamina and Physical Perfection will help you to keep costs lower and more manageable. I have a SS/SD and he is probably my thirstiest toon ever. Tons of fun and damage, but you have to be watchful of your blue bar. Toggle drops are never fun.

It all comes down to (for the pre-GR time being) which side of the law you want to play on.
If I were to roll a tank, this would be the combo. Your damage will be quite respectable with sd/ss. Probably the best combo for straight up damage. And don't forget that, aside from Ice Armor, you will be generating more taunt than all of the other primaries. AAO and Rage will be your right and left hands.

Words to the wise aren't necessary- it's the stupid ones that need them.

"You're right...I forgot...being constantly at or the near the damage cap is a big turn off. Definitely not worth it."

The Tank will be far easier to soft cap all three positions, and the addition of Physical Perfection is quite significant.

That said, a soft capped /SD Brute will have 80% of the survivability of a Tank and nearly 200% of the damage potential. You really don't give up much when both ATs are soft capped to be twice as potent on offense.

If you already have a /SD Brute, I'd personally roll a SD/ Tank for a change of pace.

The higher HPs do make a difference, too. My Shield/SS Tank dodges a lot, but there are some mobs with strong +to hit buffs, and having more HP to survive that is a nice addition to the defense.

But yeah, considering what he already has, a Tank might be more fun for variety. Unless he prefers to play villains. Fun and concept are the name of the game in the end for most people.

This is absolutely true and I want to point out that 99% of the time that "80% of the survivabilty" is more than survivable enough. Unless you're hellbent on rolling out blueside I'd go brute.
