By the way, in the strategy for pulling the AV's is it typical to go for them in a particular order? We could not for the life of us, pull less than two of them.
We always take the AV's in this order, GW, Scirocco, Mako & Scorpion. An Illusionist with superior invis can single pull with the Nemesis Staff (with a little luck) or a blaster can do it from maximum snipe range fairly reliably. A Psi snipe is nearly guaranteed to single pull... the range on that sucker is so long. One of our teammates has a rad/psi defender and has never failed to single pull.

The order of AV's is intended to get the most dangerous ones out of the way first... GW can be a disaster if she comes along unexpectedly so prepare for her and kill her first. Scirocco is the next most dangerous for squishies with the dust devils so he's next on the hit list. Mako & Scorp are both fairly vanilla; of the two Mako's more dangerous. Scorp is simply a big bag of hit points; by far the easiest of the four.

In fact, I can recall one STF a while back where we got all four AV's in a busted pull and decided to go with it. By the time we dropped GW, Scirocco & Mako Scorpion was also dead from AOE splash. We managed to kill a 54 AV without realizing it

Loved the fast response time from the GM. Back on WoW, I had a ticket open for 48 hours once, so the 10 min I waited here was very nice.
I'm glad you got your problem taken care of... the cave maps are a real pain in the butt, particularly the blue caves. You'll eventually learn where the mobs tend to be but it's still remarkably difficult to find that last baddie.

Indeed they do, in my experience the only set that's better at aggro than Inv or Shield is Ice since Chilling Embrace tics every 0.5 seconds so it will grab aggro faster.

Stone or Fire with a 2 second tic rate can hold aggro, but they take longer to get aggro and Fire anyway has to roll a tohit on it's aura... most other auras are autohit.

To the OP, your Inv/SS tanker should be quite competent once it matures a bit... no tanker really shines in the low levels but Inv being heavily resistance based does decently. You will have endurance problems until you get stamina so slot your powers accordingly. Accuracy and endurance reduction in your attacks should take priority.
  5. This game is heavily instanced so most of the players at any given time will be in missions... you don't often see people wandering around in the world.

PvP is mostly a dead issue for the playerbase, it wasn't ever very popular and the changes about a year ago pretty well killed off interest. The only server I've heard of that still PvP's is Freedom.

Population is shown by the ranking of the servers when you log in. The last server you logged into will be on top, then the least busy server down to the busiest server at the bottom. Freedom and Virtue are the two highest population and trade the top honors back and forth.

    Thanks!
Ghostie has standard accuracy for a level 54 AV... at the 45% softcap she'll have something around 10-11% chance to hit you with her heal and any of her other attacks.

For practical matters if you have everyone in melee softcapped to negative energy her heal is an non-issue.

If you want to be a damage dealer first and foremost then you certainly want a scrapper; scrappers will always outdamage tanks by a pretty substantial margin.

Be aware though that Fire Armor is pretty squishy out of the box for both tanks and scrappers; it can be made to perform well but it takes some effort in build, playstyle and IO bonuses. It also lacks any knockback protection so you'll be dependent on either IO bonuses or Acrobatics.

    Invuln/EM

The Mako's offer ranged defense, not typed so they're less useful to you... remember that Inv has significant typed defenses already and doesn't benefit as much from positional. I'd definitely replace those with something else... I don't have Mid's handy to see your percentages but if you've already soft capped S/L defense then consider slotting Crushing Impact for the recharge bonus.

Another thing I noticed is the Numina in Dull Pain... that set doesn't offer the recharge that Doctored Wounds does which is one of the more important things to enhance in the power. I'd move the unique and heal to Health and slot 5 Doctored Wounds into Dull Pain.

As I said I don't have Mid's on this computer but from a cursory look that's all that jumped out at me. There's a few things I'd do differently but I don't see any other real problems offhand.
  9. My thoughts on Stone after taking two of them to 50 are that there's little need to build for survivability... on pure SO's a well built Stone tank can solo tank the tower buffed Lord Recluse on the STF. That being the case, what I want is to minimize the penalties.

To accomplish that I look for primarily two things, recharge bonuses and runspeed bonuses. If you've an end heavy secondary you may want to get some recovery/end bonuses. Some sets I'd look at:

    • Gift of the Ancients - 4 slot this for a recovery and endurance bonus. Use the runspeed IO as one of the 4 and you get two things you need in one set. Toss this into Rock Armor.
    • Crushing Impact - 5 of these gives a 5% recharge bonus; they go nicely into melee attacks.
    • Doctored Wounds - 5 of these also gives a 5% recharge bonus; toss it into Earth's Embrace.
    • If you've the inf you can toss Luck of the Gambler 7.5% recharge IO's into several of your defense armors... they ARE pricey and something for you to work toward.
Granite is a weird animal... you want ED capped resistance enhancement and ED capped defense enhancement, this makes slotting sets a challenge. You're going to want to Frankenslot resistance and defense, yet most sets won't ED cap you in only 3 slots. I tend to use a mix of common def and res IO's and toss a couple of special IO's in the last two slots, typically the Steadfast Resist/3% defense and Luck of the Gambler 7.5% recharge.

Now your current budget places some tight constraints; you don't have enough to fully slot the sets I listed even disregaurding the expensive IO's. I would work on the sets a piece at a time as I had the money... probably starting with the GotA sets, then Doctored Wounds followed by Crushing Impact. I usually use SO's as placeholders so the character is playable while you're trying to acquire the IO's you need.
  10. I've always had good luck with Asus and they have several machines that meet your specs in the $1,000 price range. I've 3 Asus laptops I use in my business and they've been very satisfactory. Even the bargain machines in the ~$450 range seem to be rock solid; I bought one last year that runs COH (non-UM) just fine for under $500.

I just got my new Alienware M11X yesterday... I wanted a small, lightweight computer with a lot of power. I got an i7 CPU, Nvidia 335 GPU and 4GB RAM in a 4lb package for ~$1,200... it has an 11.8" screen though. I just got tired of lugging 11lbs of laptop and 4lbs of power supply from motel to worksite. I haven't had a chance to fire up COH on it yet, but it ought to handle mid-range Ultra Mode; the GPU is more powerful than my old laptop and has a lower resolution screen to push.

I disagree with this, Taunt is useful at all levels if you intend to tank... it's a ranged, autohit, AOE. I find it useful several times every mission to snag loose aggro.

    Quote:
TI should be slotted first, and all the toggles, when stamina is achieved are fine with 3 slots for either resist (TI/Unyielding) and defense (invincibility). They are relatively low on end cost, and aside from attacking invuln is very good on endurance, so it's all easily manageable without the end reductions on the toggles for now.

You'd be better off picking up hasten, instead of taunt (mainly for dull pain, and attacks of course) though I usually pick it up around 22/24, and pick up the tier 2 or 3 attack instead of taunt.

Likewise RPD is good to get to stack on your s/l resistances, especially in the earlier levels, as well as the DDR it grants for you.
RPD is nice to have, and I typically plan to get it sometime in the 20's... there's too many more important powers to get earlier so it has to wait a bit. Hasten is useful, but most Invuln builds are very tight and don't have a lot of room for extras and in my opinion hasten's an extra.

    Quote:
As to the travel/pre-req, I always suggest combat jumping. For added defense with invincibility, but also largely for the combo of it + hurdle for combat mobility.

I also suggest 3 slotting health asap, especially for the moment you hit 22, to place SOs in it. As DP is your only form of "heal" the regen from health becomes quite useful to an invuln tanker (plus IO placements of numinas/regen tissue unique later)
I typically go with CJ/SJ on a tanker for travel but it really isn't a game breaker whichever travel you go with. Definitely agree with Hurdle... unless you're a flier I find hurdle more useful than swift.

I do have an issue with slotting Health... yes, it adds to your regen, but it's a fairly minor amount. There are simply too many other demands on slots, particularly in the lower levels to recommend using those slots for Health. If you have a slot or two extra in the upper levels then you could put them here, but early you're better off slotting attacks, armors, dull pain and so forth.

    YES!

Seriously, I was doing some detailed work in Photoshop (a moving notice that my brother wanted to mail out) using a mouse and, by the time I was done, my shoulder actually ached. I got the tablet right after that. Even the lowest-end product from a decent manufacturer (Graphire series from Wacom) made a huge, huge difference. A dinky little tablet with a 4x5" sensor surface was a fantastic improvement in terms of accuracy and comfort. A friend of mine is a graphic artist and has a 12x12" high-end tablet and it's amazing.

Make no mistake, though, even a low-end tablet costs more than a good mouse. I got my tablet several years ago, on sale, and I had a discount coupon, and it was $75. I never regretted it.
Hmm, well ~$100 isn't a huge expense for me so I guess I'll pick one up and see if it suits me. I've been doing video work and light photoshop stuff forever and have always used the mouse; since my drawing skills stop just past drawing a straight line I never picked up a tablet. I'll check out the egg and see what they have that looks decent... they're much cheaper than local stores on most other peripherals. (I bought a MS Natural KB from Newegg for ~$20 a while back in a plain brown box... Best Buy at the time wanted $60 for the same product in a fancy retail box. I'm not paying any $40 for a box)

I find this occurrence to be a good reason to clear the corridor personally... it makes it much easier to find the stray.

Let's say that I've got a fire blaster and a fire tank.

Both have Fire Sword Circle, which is PBAoE Melee.

Does the tank need mez protection? as a rule, no. So why would the tank go with a set that provided some status protection? Ordinarily, a tank probably would not go for that set - unless the other bonuses were hard to pass up. Increasing attack rate by 9% of ALL powers seems pretty nice to me. But, if you keep looking, you might find a set that provides 7% increase in recharge speed, and a 5% increase in accuracy/to-hit of all powers.

So, without getting in too deep, just remember to think ahead and try to get a feel for which IO recipes/enhancements that you'd like that will fit your character.
And once you've figured out what you want look at the market and find out what they're selling for... many times a "lesser" IO set starts looking MUCH more attractive if you can buy the complete set for 1/3 of what a single IO from the better set costs.

I do agree that as a new player you're better off not worrying about IO sets now... the basic SO enhancements you can buy at the store work fine and are MUCH less complicated. Once you have a firm grasp of the game you can start thinking about IO sets, but those can get extremely complex in a big hurry. You can be perfectly adequate in the game all the way to 50 with just the standard SO enhancements... after all for the first several years of the game's existence that's all we had.

I'd guess that probably 50% of the players in the game still use SO enhancements the whole way to 50 and they do ok. True, a really good IO set build is more effective but that's something to worry about once you aren't still learning the basics. You'll spend maybe 5 minutes every few levels buying enhancements with SO's... a good IO build takes many hours of bidding on items, crafting and slotting.
  16. I've played a dark/dark defender to 50 which is the mirror of your corrupter; the combination is very effective at neutering the enemies' ability to hit you or your team thanks to it's powerful tohit debuffs. It isn't one of the bigger damage sets though; dark blast is strong in mitigation but relatively weak in damage output.

You'll be a very effective teammate but as you level up you'll have lower damage output than some other sets.

Shield/Dark would be very survivable; Dark is definitely single target focused... the AOE's are on very long recharge. It's competent and durable; just lacking in AOE capacity.

Shield/Elec is popular, particularly as a Scrapper combination since it's hugely AOE focused. It's fantastic at dropping large groups of weak foes but it does lack significant single target punch. I compare Elec Melee with Spines... both offer large amounts of AOE damage at the expense of single target damage and somewhat slow animations.

Joking aside I agree that there are situations where you want to exercise some caution... the lab "room of death" with the catwalk and platform in the middle being a good example. I will survive, but I'll also be so far over aggro cap that the rest of the team may well get too much attention. For that one I have the team stand behind the corner and I run in, gather the aggro cap and run out around the opposite corner and wait for the friends. Usually after one or at most two of these pulls the room's thinned out enough to just bum rush it.

i really appreciate your help. thanks.
Yep, anything dealing with the game controls is against the ToS. Technically the Vidiotmaps addon violates the ToS but it's been allowed by the Devs for 6 years now and has attained a semi-official status... it's even made a list of "best game sites" for COH.

I'm pretty unfamiliar with WoW's nuts & bolts, I only played one character to around level 7 but the CoH interface is pretty flexible. You can use binds and macros to accomplish many different things and of course all the controls can be remapped to suit your preference. The UI is set up specifically to prevent "botting"; as an example you can only set one power to autofire at a time. There are limited ways around some of this with a game controller that supports complex macros but I rarely bother with something that elaborate.

One thing to keep in mind though is that there's no "holy trinity" of tank/heal/dps in this game... healing is one of the weaker forms of mitigation, our debuffs and buffs are generally much more powerful. This is something that tends to confuse lots of other MMO players when they first start playing... there are no "healers" per say and if your team's at all competent heals are largely unnecessary.
  21. Well, on Guardian I haven't had any PvP interference in either Bloody Bay in the last year or so... admittedly I only venture into Bloody Bay for Shivans and rarely bother with Warburg nukes. I don't know if it's changed recently, but Pinnacle used to be much the same... my SG tends to alternate between Guardian & Pinnacle and we've been hanging around Guardian for the last several months.

As a general rule PvP is nearly nonexistent on most servers... the majority of the playerbase never had any interest in it and the changes in issue 13 drove away most of the minority who did PvP.
  22. There is a lot of information available on the nuts & bolts of the game at Paragon Wiki.

You'll definitely want Mid's Hero Designer to plan out your character's build... it lets you design your character from the ground up and does all the calculations to give you the numbers behind your character.

There's a map pack, which is a replacement for your in-game map with all the badge locations and other points of interest indicated at Vidiotmaps

There's also Herostats, a program that runs on top of COH and keeps track of all the stats, it's highly useful.

Additionally there's these boards; many of us have been playing for 5+ years now and quite a few of us have gained a pretty in-depth knowledge of the game. You can get specific answers about particular archetypes by looking in the forum for each specific AT. Don't forget about all the various guides that have been written about almost every aspect of the game.

In any case welcome to the game; like many others I've been playing for over 5 years now so the game must be doing something right. I've seen the ups and downs of buffs and nerfs, some minor, some severe yet I've stayed through it all.

And to the secondary...all the attack abilities between mace/stone are nearly the same in terms of damage and CC type.Looks as tho the strat is the same no matter how u look at it.

So then tell me...why would i make a shield/mace tank if i have a powerhouse of a tanker alrdy?
If you enjoy your Ice tanker then by all means play it... there's nothing wrong with Ice. Shield will deal more damage thanks to AAO and Shield Charge and is somewhat more survivable since it has positional defense instead of typed and also includes a fair amount of resistance. Shield is also easier to soft cap since you can get to ~42% full time on SO's, although it's not hard to soft cap Ice. You're correct that an Ice tank will hold aggro better... nothing can outaggro an Icer. However AAO is also very good at getting attention so either can easily do the job.

I'll agree with the mace/stone thought as well... I've thought the same myself that they are similar. Mace offers more AOE damage while Stone has better control and single target damage.

In the final analysis you'll be a potent tanker with either power combination. Play whichever suits you the most.
  24. Eh, for a lot of characters purples are overrated... many builds need different set bonuses than they provide and I'm not convinced that they're really worth the cost.

The only purple sets I've ever bothered with are the relatively inexpensive confuse & sleep ones; the rest are just prohibitive in cost/benefit. I'll happily take the drops I get and sell them to those of you with more money than sense... I recently had a Armageddon triple sell for over 700 million.

If you really want purples then you've two choices... either kill lots of 47+ mobs and hope lighting strikes or pony up the cash to buy them on the market. Personally I have way too many characters I play to put that kind of cash into one. My most expensive build is my perma-PA Ill/Rad and I did that for around 600 million with a little patience... most of my builds come in well under 200 million.
