Mouse recommendations?

The mousewheel on my trusty old Logitech G5 Laser is giving out. I took it apart and cleaned it, which fixed some of it, but there's no real way around it, it's worn out. I need a new mouse. It's too bad, because I'm really happy with my G5, except for the mousewheel, so I'm a little sad to have to replace the old cracked-blue rodent. But things break, mice included.

I'm mainly considering doing the direct upgrade path and getting a Logitech G500 replacement. I like the wired laser mouse I have, and the new model has a better mousewheel, while keeping the shape of my old one. But I'm taking suggestions, since I'm not well versed in the area of mice.

So... what's good with mice?

This one is my all time favorite that I am using now..it's wireless, and uses AA batteries. (The one before had a docking station, and this is the upgrade from that.) I got it on sale, and have been SO happy with all the features, the 'feel' and comfort of it.

The MX1100 looks nice, yeah. But I actually prefer a wired mouse. Scary, I know. I went with the G500 I had been looking at. A little expensive for a mouse, but I think I'm going to be happy with it.

Yeah, but you really don't want to scrimp on your IO systems. The monitor, mouse and keyboard are your interface with the computer. A cheap mouse and/or keyboard can contribute to repetitive stress injuries (i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome, etc). I use a Logitech cordless laser mouse at home, a Logitech trackball at work and a graphics tablet if I'm going to be editing an image.

I'll second the suggestion for the MX1100; it's the mouse I'm using on my desktop right now. Yeah, it uses AA batteries, but I get between 1-2 months of use out of a set on average. I'll agree it's a big step forward from Logitech's rechargeable mouse with docking station... that thing was always problematic getting it to charge; if the contacts weren't freshly cleaned off it wouldn't work and it was only good for about 8 hours on a charge.

After using cordless mice for nearly 10 years I simply can't stand dealing with a cord, it drives me nuts when it catches on something. Ok, maybe it's more of a gimmie putt than a drive but still

Just out of curiosity do you find the tablet that big an improvement over using a mouse for image work? I've considered getting one for Photoshop but since I've never used one before I'm unsure if it's really worth it.

This is exactly why I went for the G500, actually. I've used the G5 I had regularly for a good three years with no issues, no carpal tunnel, no sore muscles, and no strained joints. I'm wasn't about to take a chance with a mouse with too different a shape. The G500 is almost exactly the same shape as the G5, so I went for that. I've tried the MX series. They're good, but I prefer the G series.

But yeah, I agree. A good mouse is one of the most important parts of a PC you'll use on a regular basis. I mean the G500 (and G5) has this silly drawer where you can change wheigts to customize the balance. I find it hilariously silly, but... I still spent som time to balance my mouse "just right". I know I'll like it in the long run.

Let me think . . .
.
.
.
YES!

Seriously, I was doing some detailed work in Photoshop (a moving notice that my brother wanted to mail out) using a mouse and, by the time I was done, my shoulder actually ached. I got the tablet right after that. Even the lowest-end product from a decent manufacturer (Graphire series from Wacom) made a huge, huge difference. A dinky little tablet with a 4x5" sensor surface was a fantastic improvement in terms of accuracy and comfort. A friend of mine is a graphic artist and has a 12x12" high-end tablet and it's amazing.

Make no mistake, though, even a low-end tablet costs more than a good mouse. I got my tablet several years ago, on sale, and I had a discount coupon, and it was $75. I never regretted it.

Hmm, well ~$100 isn't a huge expense for me so I guess I'll pick one up and see if it suits me. I've been doing video work and light photoshop stuff forever and have always used the mouse; since my drawing skills stop just past drawing a straight line I never picked up a tablet. I'll check out the egg and see what they have that looks decent... they're much cheaper than local stores on most other peripherals. (I bought a MS Natural KB from Newegg for ~$20 a while back in a plain brown box... Best Buy at the time wanted $60 for the same product in a fancy retail box. I'm not paying any $40 for a box)

upgraded mine to a Logitech G500 a while back and it's aces.

On the fly sensitivity adjustment is great for when I'm playing FPS's and it has the nicest mousewheel I've ever used. You can toggle between click scrolling (nice for gaming) and frictonless scrolling (nice for websurfing and document editing).

The only thing I don't like is the thumb buttons are further back than my old mx500, which was perfect for my big paws.

Other than that, it's a five star product. Been using it about a year now and it's fantastic.

I'm using a G500, actually - for the same reason (ok, mine had a cord snag/break, and Logitech sent the 500 as a replacement.) It's a nice little mouse.

Other than that, the only advice I can *really* give is - if you're going with a different brand (or odd shape,) go to a physical store and try one out. Doesn't matter if it has the highest DPS, etc, etc, etc if it's uncomfortable as hell to use.

One recurring problem I've had with various mice in the past is that the "feet" are attached to the mouse with something like rubber cement, which eventually smears and causes the feet to drift and eventually fall off.

Currently, my cheap Dynex corded laser mouse is having trouble recognizing when I want to do a right-click and drag action, so I'm about ready to bounce it off a wall.

I've been thinking about replacing my Logitech MX620 when I build my new machine. The mouse was awesome in it's first 2 years, but it's now turning into a schizophrenic with turettes. Everything's fine one minute and then it just does whatever it wants.

I'm looking at the Razer Naga as a suitable replacement because CoH is mainly what I will be using the rig for.

Thoughts?

Wow, that thing has a lot of buttons; has someone worked up a specific configuration for CoH on it?
