  1. i understand the passionate responses, and i can appreciate the sentiment behind them.

what i dont understand, is the snarkiness behind DarkEther's response. i guess thats just who that person is, and if that's a testament to a percentage of people who are left on this server, than i feel i made the right decision to leave.

    Claws, i get what you're saying, and i understand you meant nothing personal by it, so here's my take on your questions;

'"This is exactly WHY the smaller servers are the smaller servers. As soon as someone starts having trouble finding something to do (usually through failure to properly look, spamming broadcast doesn't work, sorry to say) they move to Freedom."'

your assumption is "as soon as." - i clearly stated i have been looking for respec teams for MONTHS. in fact, i have offered to log in my wife's account and let it door sit as one of the 4 toons required, in liue of looking for a 4th person. my main is capable of soloing the Terra Volta reactor trial (freaks), with a properly built "spot healer". yet it requires 3 other people, and i can't find 2 who want to do it on any given day. now, i dont know you, or your toons, nor do i "know" many people...BUT...everyone needs to respec now and then, right? i guess everyone left on this server has so much luck they find respec tokens? or maybe they have oodles of cash and can buy respecs? or maybe they have oodles of influence and buy them off the AH? im not sure. but, yes, i could not find anyone willing to do a respec after using team search, spamming broadcast announcements, etc. all of the channels except forum chit chat...and if the game is relegated to building teams from forum talk hours or days in advance, well......do i really need to spell that out for you? im not being an a$$hat here, thats a SERIOUS issue.

'"You don't need more than 7 other people to do anything in this game, why do you require thousands to choose from?"'

i don't require thousands of people to choose from. likewise, im sure that many people who are leaving Pinnacle dont require thousands to choose from, either. but boy, what a refreshing outlook those thousands put on the game. ive been playing online games since 1999 and can tell you from experience that some of the people left on Pinnacle are soloists, some are very close-knit, and some are not very social. not everyone, and certinly many do not fit all 3 categories or even 2 of those categories. but with such a small population, any one of those characteristics makes it very difficult to accomplish my personal goals. please see paragraph 1 for that explanation. im not bagging on the people of Pinnacle. i played here since the game went live. sure, ive left and come back (twice), but that doesnt mean i count less than people who've never left, and i like pinnacle, and the people ive met. but im also a realist. there just isnt the population left here to support my goals as a player, and so to stay playing, i've moved several of my toons, main included.

'"Or is it that you just can't be bothered to be proactive and want to wait until someone asks you if you want in on something."'

do you really want me to comment on that? i mean, i know you said you weren't being personal, but....dude, im 43 and play this game for "downtime" fun. i don't need to be asked to be in on something, i make my own fun most of the time. its the times when id like to do something and cant find likeminded individuals, which frustrates me. i dont have hours and hours to sit at the keyboard and while away "LFT"....ive got a house, bills, a wife, and kids. a game is the last thing i want complicating my already complex life. if making the move can eliminate "downtime during the downtime" than i am ALL FOR THAT. perhaps if i were in a large SG (which im not) id have stayed. i mean, its not like my main isnt brilliantly built, can't solo AV's orPL with his eyes closed (he can do all that and make bread and chips to go). it's just...Iive never been invited AWAY from the current SG im in. and trust me, there's times when i was in groups made up of 7 members from a single SG ans wished they would invite me. im not pushy, and im not gonna barge in on anyones fun, but i know im a good enough player to warrant invites. its just...NO ONE DOES IT. they see that tag, and stop there. which is fine. its the exact same thing as "why are you leaving pinnacle" but on a smaller scale. no one steals people into their SG, but meanwhile their server is tanking because of some unspoken rules about not "stealing other SG's members"....man i sure hope you're getting this sentiment, because it's the main point im trying to make. sorry for the run-on paragraph.

'"Does ANYONE ever stop to think that if they moved characters FROM Freedom instead of moving them there that the other servers wouldn't be so "dead"? Of course not, because that would require effort, and we can't have that you know."'

    see paragraph response directly above.

and again, no offense taken. please don't take any from the things i said. again, i wish those staying the best of luck, but there's the reasons in full detail for why im out the door. good luck!
  2. moved my main and 2 alts so far, to Freedom. Pinn, unfortunately, is extremely dead. I have not been able to find a task force for weeks, a respec trial for months, and frankly...it's about time they did this.

good luck to those who are staying.

Now, if your running a Regen or a Willpower with their native recoveries, stamina, and body mastery, the endurance drain on Ninja-Run isn't going to be an issue. You'd probably just be able to toggle it, and not worry about it. However, if you ever joined a team, everybody would forever be calling you Captain Slow... since even the guys with flight will be leaving you in their dust.

Ninja Run is a neat toy... but as a replacement for one of the existing travel powers? It isn't.

i will disagree with this, entirely.

all things being equal (flight PLUS swift slotted with a flight.....OR Ninja Run PLUS swift slotted with a run AND sprint being slotted with a run)

    Flight = 56.1 mph
Ninja Run Speed + Sprint both toggled = 59.x mph (i have 5% extra to run speed, so don't know exact decimal place).

Now, if you want to waste a power AND a slot, by all means put a second slot into flight and then you won't be Captain Slow.

However, if you are taking flight in order to 2 or 3 slot it with Zephyr, then you will be roughly the same speed as the ninja run + swift + sprint...and you'll get the defense's to boot. which is great!

i dropped hover and flight, respec'd combat jumping (which detoggles ninja run anyhow).

it's not a neat toy, it's an alternative, and it does let you free up slots and powers. and with the amount of teleporting around that's currently available, there's really no such thing as Captain Slow. and if you're worried about places that require flight, well just pick up a jetpack
  4. i've got a DM/inv and i don't see me trying this any time....ever. there's a few reasons, but mostly its the 5+ billion investment.

    • Would like a primary in the middle of the ST - AoE continuum. Spines just didn't deal the ST damage I sometimes needed, but it is most definitely awesome to knock down a dozen minions at once.
    • I'd like PvP to be an option, as I would like to eventually experience it.
    • While I'm not made of Influence on my other toons, I am definitely willing to eventually spend quite a bit on this toon. Though I definitely prefer not to use anything but generic IOs until 47. So, preferably not a secondary that needs IOs to be manageable as a soloer/leveller.
    • EDIT: Almost forgot. I've always wanted to solo an AV, but isn't this more or less possible with any set selection with a decent build?
From what I've heard about it, I'm thinking I might like BS/, but that's all I got. I'm looking for any and all opinions. Let me know what you think!

P.S. As a bonus, whoever picks the set selection I like most gets to name it! (If you want, of course)
i don't think there's a scrapper comboset out there that can't solo. as for which secondary is best to solo with? that's up to how patient you are.

willpower starts strong, right out of the box, and it finishes strong. that said, it has it's flaws. it is pretty boring because it's a set it and forget it powerset. it's extremely difficult to soft cap for defense, and probably not worth it even if you decide to try. i like my fire/WP scrapper alot. he's the one scrapper i've devoted most of my time to, and invested the most in. absolute machine in farms. has solo'd av's. very good solo toon. great group toon. easiest toon i ever took to 50.

shields are FOTY. everyone's doing electric/shield because of the late game combo. totally devastating move. do a little research on it, and you may find this is the combo for you. it costs alot to build, but has very little weakness. have a lvl 15 but im working on other projects so he's taken a back seat and invests most of his time in getting day job badges

invuln is a great set to go with also. easy to softcap smash/lethal. some say it's squishy even when soft capped, but i don't think so. i like my DM/Inv scrapper. very good PVP, imho. can solo AV's. good solo toon. great group toon. probably second easiest i took to 50.

super reflexes is an extremely good set, IMHO, but unlike willpower, it doesnt start to pick up steam until the later stages of development. it's an END hog. extremely easy to soft cap for positional defenses. i have a 38 DB/SR brute and a 16 DB/SR scrapper and i like both, but haven't gotten to 50 yet (obviously) so cant tell you how well they will perform end game, but i can say that i "think" they'll do fine. again, i don't think there's a bad scrapper set up to be found.

as for the other secondaries i have little to no experience. dark is an END hog. regen is very good, but not the glamour power it was for the first year or 2. the others i know nothing about.

as for primaries in the middle of the AOE/ST...i thoroughly enjoy Fire. Fire Sword Cicrle is a bomb, it has a good animation, a great sound, and does good damage. Dark Melee not so good on AOE, but kills ST supersupersuper fast. broad sword has great ST damage. electric melee + shield charge is the reason people are making electric/SD scrappers...i've seen it in action, and it's good for group killing, once a minute or so. dunno about inbetween. katana is a safe bet for good middling damage on ST/AOE. dual blades is a fun set...my DB brute and DB scrappers are both super reflexes, so were very tough to level up because both powersets consume END rather quickly. my scrapper is only 16, but he's a "flavor" toon..i called him IIIII (roman number V) in honor of Vendetta, but the lack of endurance is a pain. i remember why i stopped playing my brute at 38, now. hah! as for the rest of the primaries, i know very little. i believe all of them are capable of soloing AV's.

as for a seconday that needs IO's to be manageable? i dont quite understand what you mean. do you mean "not an endurance hog"? if thats what you mean, then you want either regen or willpower.

and again, anything is possible with scrappers, IMHO. just about any combo can kill an AV given enough INF to throw at it. some demand alot more patience to go to 50 with, than others (i made and retired 4 BS/DA scrappers since 2005...highest was 32). in the end, pick what you think sounds like fun. i chose fire/willpower when the either the primary or seconday (or both!?!...its been so damn long!) set became available, and it's been my most favorite toon to date, even more so than my very first 50.

    good luck!

  7. strong and pretty AE mish: Yakuza Graverobbers.

    strong and pretty bosses.

    plus some other guys.
  8. well, here's how my thought process went down;

    1. you're teaming with a storm/electric defender, so he's probably got O2 boost. he's also probably got Steamy Mist, but that's not a 99%'er like O2 boost. he may also be running Maneuvers, which again is not a "for sure" like O2 boost. all that being said, i guessed he would have at least one of those powers. in combination with the healing you can get from him, that extra 1.87% (see explanation below) lost on the kinetic combat is worth what you get back.

    you get Hasten.

    2. getting Hasten makes the difference in needing that 5th ST attack. you eliminate a small attack and reduce the number of attacks and this causes DPS to increase. a build like you've got here (mine's similar, I'll post it downt he page some) can mow down +1/8 groups extremely quickly, even with bosses. you are never targeting MIN's and LT's, just bosses. FSC takes out the trash, that's why it needs 6 slots. losing the 5th ST attack frees up just enough slots to do it, AND give you slots in CHAR and buildup. the reason you only lose 1.87% smash/lethal is because of the extra slot you place in buildup to install a pair of Rectified Reticles. and you gain more damage! damage = good!

    more damage.

    3. you picked up a total of 3 slots by dropping Fire Sword. you put one in FSC to fully slot it, and added AOE damage to clean up the yard trash. you put the third slot into CHAR and got to 2-slot LOCKDOWN for a global 3% damage boost.

so, do i know it's worth that 1.87% defense? nope. i don't know. do i THINK it's worth it....you bet i do. now, all that being said, it's your toon, and all i was doing was making assumptions that started with a very flawed one (the rule of 4...err....5).

i know for a fact that 4 ST attacks is all you will ever need with fire/WP using hasten...i play one myself. and viewing your toon vs mine, with haten you have alot more recharge than i do. so....your attack chain will go something like: Buildup/Incinerate/Scorch/Cremate/Scorch/FSC. if THAT doesn't finish a red boss, something's wrong. you will typically get 2 bosses in a +1/8 spawn, maybe 3 when paired with your Defender friend. by the second FSC all the minions will be dead, and probably most of the LT's (you may not get a crit on all of them). if there's 3 bosses in the mob, for SURE the trash will all be gone on the 3rd FSC.

ok, ALL that said, my template "is" different than yours. i solo with this toon about 75% of the time, so i do need a bit more defense. i also tossed in some flavor (flight line) at the expense of damage, and i spent a BUCKETLOAD on LotG recharges, so i can run a hastened attack chain that looks like this: buildup/scorch/FSC/scorch/cremate/scorch/FSC/buildup.....

personally i dont even like incinerate. i used to use it alot, and found that alot of the damage was being wasted; fire melee kills stuff SOOOoo quickly, especially an IO'd build like you've shown, so that's why i took the flight line with air superiority.

anyhow, i sure don't want to tell you how to build your toon, i was just making suggestions, and i think the build rocks either way. good luck to ya!

and btw, here's my build. and yep, it's completed...yay!

caveats: i used +1/8 because that's what i farm INF on. no other reason.
  9. aha, well, then my thought process is jacked

i guess that's what i get for listening to someone in a post i started, who was never corrected.

for what it's worth, i still think it's too many attacks, and taunt is not worth having on a WP scrapper. i guess i'm used to running 36% defense on Smash/Lethal, and killing stuff in a bitter hurry.
  10. couple things.

first, you can't run 5 sets of Kinetic Combat. well, you "can" but you won't get the benefits of the 5th set.

second, you have 1 too many attacks (IMHO) anyways, and Fire Sword is the least effective of these so i dropped it.

third, taunt is not needed if running with only a defender in a duo. you have Rise to the Challenge, which has a small inherrent taunt built into it. just get into the fray and get some aggro, then the defender can get to doing his business.

so i tweaked your build a small amount....not alot, just touching on the things i mentioned above. i believe 3% global damage >>> taunt when only in a duo, and it gives you a power that can stop runners, if the defender is busy or aggro'd (which is what taunt does, but the char does it better...on a single mob). you honestly don't need Fire Sword, esp if you take hasten. and NEVER NEVER NEVER underslot your AOE. Fire/WP is a boss/EB/AV killer. min's and LT's are "splash" damage, and your regen (plus the fact that you are coupled with a defender) will prevent you from EVER having to worry about them. always fully slot your attacks....that's what you do!

other than that, looks good. Fire/WP is my personal favorite toon. so here's my rework:

no no no, please don't do that. i posted this because i was just curious....i'm kind of leaning to the Tough build, but may investigate getting the stealth line for super sneakiness, and then id have to use PP...just thoughts

  13. wrapped up my DM/inv, now going to start a new side project. DB/SR. i did some searches and found a great thread from August 14-17. lots of great ideas in there. here's the thread if you want to revisit it. http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...ght=dual+blade

i've sort of settled on a build for this, which combines alot of the suggestions found within that thread. i like the GoTA run speed increasers in all of the auto's. fun idea. i also like the challenge of getting to the defensive soft cap (not much of a challenge with that power combo). i like the idea of a self heal. i like the idea of NOT having hasten and using lots of attacks to take advantage of the various combos. so all that said, Werner brings up something about RESIST and slotting it (in Tough). here's my first stab at the build, utilizing Tough, and grabbing the extra 17% (or so)in smash/lethal resist.

and i know '"it's all dependent upon what you are trying to do with the build"'....but i'm not looking for blanket statements. is 17% resists really "that" good? is it better than a monumental amount of endurance gain, when coupled with a soft capped D?

so there's the debate question. thanks in advance.
  14. what flavor mobs are you fighting, in comparison to those who say they jump into +4/8 (or even +2/8 or +3/8) ??? carnies or freaks? Knives or Family? mucho difference.

and are you fighting bosses or just minions and LT's ???
  15. i've solo'd 2 AV's simultaneously with my bots/FF. it was in a story-arc Ouranbegan mission. forgot which 2 were the AV (I think it was Infernal and Diabolique).

i've solo'd AV with my necro-poison, but as someone mentioned, if you face PBoE'r, you're going to end up in a world of hurt pretty quickly.
  16. _Padre_

    why robots?

there are a couple reasons i chose bots. primary reason, my necro-poison was very difficult to level, so i switched out to bots/FF tll i could get the hang of the whole MM thing. bots/FF is a TON easier to play than just about any other combo...it's a walk-away type setup. the secondary reason is i came up with a name i wanted to use, and a story behind it.

    toon name = zyzzyx

    asault bot name = X
    heal bot 1 name = -y-
    heal bot 2 name = _y_
    minion bot 1 name = z
    minion bot 1 name = -z-
    minion bot 1 name = _z_

so the bots "spell" out my toon's name, because they are part of the great collective "i" come from. somewhere else, not here. far far away. and all that jazz.

and now that he's been 50 for a long time, ive been working on my necro-poison and he's much more fun to play because i understand how to play MM a little better than i did when i made him.
  17. to the OP: for what it's worth, i think you had a good idea thinking about improving your ranged defense. it's the route i've chosen for my earth/storm/fire controller. here's the build, and i think you will like the final numbers. if you enjoy playing your earth/storm, you won't mind dumping a respectable amount of INF into IO's...and this build won't go over half a billion (at current prices). enjoy and please critique.

  18. even with the revised build i can't see you maintaining END. i have a DM/INV scrapper and it's definitely on the heavy side of END usage in comparison with anything else I have, including a fire/fire tank. there's no getting around how much endurance the attacks cost, or how much all the toggles cost, and one measly Dark Consumption once per minute (ok, 57 seconds) will NEVER keep you over the hump, take it to the bank. personal experience.

instead of focusing on uber defenses (which seems to be the only thing people think about nowadays), focus on recharge time and maximum damage output. DM can deal more Dam over time than any other scrapper if surrounded by mobs. one 8mob spawn hit with a Soul Drain, they ALL go down in subsequent 1-shots with your other 3 main attacks. slotting for recharge everywhere you can (including attacks and defenses) will make sure you're never waiting for an attack, and you're killing so fast the mobs never have time to hurt you.

IMHO dm/inv is NOT the setup you want to play if you want to soft-cap. it's just too end-heavy. trying to squeeze in an extra attack power prevents you from getting PhysPerf. maxxing attackchain speed with Crushing Impact powersets also lessens the total cost (and it can get spendy with those LOTG recharges).

anyways, this is the build i am working towards. it isnt super heavy duty in terms of defense or resists, but again, i stress that your killing power is SO high with DM you don't "need" superhigh Defenses....unless you're looking to solo AV's. and in that case, i cant comment about it because IMHO i dont think DM/INV is a good setup for being an AV killer (back to the end cost thing). anyways, thats my 2 dollars. here ya go.

  19. after awhile, even the hammer bores of the nail.

in all my years of posting on forums, i've never seen such a picayune diatribe.

if it weren't for the fact that the 7.3491 remaining posters on the COH forums are all engaged in this thread, this thing would've been 5th page history several hours ago.

girls with guns. girls without guns. men with firehoses. men without firehoses. NO ONE CARES. it's a game, play within the parameters they've given you, make a suggestion, and move on....beating the carcass for 3 flippin pages is

    utterly

    frackin

    retarded.

Is your slotting of HPT the wise use of a Numina's set? The endurance and recharge are wasted as HPT uses none, and the bonuses of the first three are significant, but past that...
yeah, it was painful makng the decision to move from ToD's to KinComs...see above. bare min cost i guess is gonna be 400mil (all the KinCom's, plus the respec token) more. i had found a majority of the ToD's, too....which is what really hurts. it's ok, i guess i can make that much in a week or so.

as for the Numina's....i had them, so i used them, plain and simple. got luck and pulled all 6 over the course of 3 days.

they used to ride the Tour de France on singlespeeds. Then, a woman (normal, everyday, ordinary, non-professional) raced the reigning Tour De France winner up Mont Ventoux. He used a single speed. She used a 3 speed. She kicked his everlovin a$$, and that, as they say, is history.

last but not least, i would not take tactics. if you are in need of 8% accuracy, get it from an IO set. if you need MORE accuracy, but not all the time, take Focused Accuracy from the Body epic pool and use it when you need it (and be prepared to chew on a few blues).

that's what I'd do with the build, and still keep the same cost constraints you set up.

feel free to check my post on Fire/WP (only a day or two old, still on front page of scrapper forums).

I've found on most teams I just spam FSC and epic aoe on my fire/sr, it generally isn't worth targeting anything less than luts as the aoe splash will eliminate all of them.
i don't like DOT's. i spec'd out of incinerate after i started to use specialty IO's. the DOT was getting wasted, because of what you mention, below.

Though incin is certainly your most end efficient attack that probably isn't a major concern on a /wp w/ stamina. I personally wouldn't drop incin for GFS as the latter is a pretty visually and auditory satisfying attack as you pretty much cleave foes from head to toe with a huge firesword.
my hastened attack chain, without a break is scorch-cremate-scorch-GFS-FSC-cremate-scorch-GFS-scorch-FSC. when hasten drops i tend to add air superiority inbetween FSC and cremate. it does a little more damage than scorch, and it smooths out the attack chain without breaking it up. yeah, END isn't a problem unless i hit SOW and am still in a battle after it poofs....which only happens on AV's, (fortunately? unfortunately? hah!) i'm sticking with GFS...it's a nice finisher. it looks good. it does sound good too.

hm, solo friendly, group friendly, fun friendly. i hate tedious toons....i have plenty of them, and that's why none of them have gotten the attention this one has, and why he's my badger, my IO'd toon, and my go-to guy. he can even PVP a little it's all good! thanks again for the heads up on the Hecatomb/accuracy/cremate probelm.

Since WP has a bit of typed defense to begin with, I like typed defense, especially smash/lethal, and push that as high as I can, while throwing in some energy as well.
i could probably slot out the ToD's for more Kinetic Combats+Hecatombs, in scorch and GFS. problem is, i already have the ToD's....and only 1 respec left (or cough up 100mil for a respec toke, or attemtp to find a respec TF team...GL with that on Pinnacle), and the 10 free slots are taken up with other things i wanna dump out and replace. so i'd lose about 100m in sellable IO's....either way its gonna cost me about 100m to jump from ToD's to Kinetic Combats in those 2 powers, PLUS the cost of the KinCom's (2 more sets just added about 300m to the final cost of the build...thats 400m to add 3% of Def....eeek!). it may be a long term plan....

Same with the common Heal in Fast Healing - replacing that with a Miracle Heal/End will lose a bit of regen, but gain some hp, which should work out at just about a wash, but will give you a bit better ability to soak an alpha.
this is definitely a great idea. i ran those out with 3-slotted Numina's as you suggested and i get a bit more overall regen and 50+ HP to boot. thanks for that!
  25. thanks for the responses/suggestions

i like the idea of dropping in 4 LoTG instead of the 2 Kismet's and GotA.

i also like the idea of not using the Dark Watcher in RttC, as it does give me an additional slot (maybe drop in a 5th reactive armor in Tough to get a few more points of AoE def). ill test it out before i go with it.

    thanks again!
