Need help deciding on a scrapper
Personally I am having a blast right now with a Shield/Axe Tanker. Scrappers will do even more damage, but the Tanker is tough enough (even before IOs) to comfortably let the enemies mass around him to fuel Against All Odds, the toggle that increases damage. Axe has pretty good single-target and AoE attack chains (especially if you consider Cleave, the hard-hitter with a very narrow cone, to fall into either chain, which I do).
War Mace would work just as well -- somewhat better AoE utility at the cost (they tell me) of slightly lower ST damage. The two sets are neck-and-neck, and I'd let concept guide me if choosing between them.
I'm also enjoying a Dual Blades Scrapper (mine's /SR, but I don't recommend DB/SR to everyone, it's soooooo tight a build). The combos are entertaining, and it would work well as a soloist, since you can get tunnel vision and just concentrate on timing your combos with no one else to worry about.
Really, any Scrapper, most Tankers, and several Controllers (the damage-heavy combos) would do fine. Oh, and villainside, mot of the ATs solo just fine.

I'd say you might enjoy a FM/Regen Scrap. Though it would take a whole lot of money to make it solo AVs, it will accomplish everything else you listed.
Hey all.
P.S. As a bonus, whoever picks the set selection I like most gets to name it! (If you want, of course) |
willpower starts strong, right out of the box, and it finishes strong. that said, it has it's flaws. it is pretty boring because it's a set it and forget it powerset. it's extremely difficult to soft cap for defense, and probably not worth it even if you decide to try. i like my fire/WP scrapper alot. he's the one scrapper i've devoted most of my time to, and invested the most in. absolute machine in farms. has solo'd av's. very good solo toon. great group toon. easiest toon i ever took to 50.
shields are FOTY. everyone's doing electric/shield because of the late game combo. totally devastating move. do a little research on it, and you may find this is the combo for you. it costs alot to build, but has very little weakness. have a lvl 15 but im working on other projects so he's taken a back seat and invests most of his time in getting day job badges
invuln is a great set to go with also. easy to softcap smash/lethal. some say it's squishy even when soft capped, but i don't think so. i like my DM/Inv scrapper. very good PVP, imho. can solo AV's. good solo toon. great group toon. probably second easiest i took to 50.
super reflexes is an extremely good set, IMHO, but unlike willpower, it doesnt start to pick up steam until the later stages of development. it's an END hog. extremely easy to soft cap for positional defenses. i have a 38 DB/SR brute and a 16 DB/SR scrapper and i like both, but haven't gotten to 50 yet (obviously) so cant tell you how well they will perform end game, but i can say that i "think" they'll do fine. again, i don't think there's a bad scrapper set up to be found.
as for the other secondaries i have little to no experience. dark is an END hog. regen is very good, but not the glamour power it was for the first year or 2. the others i know nothing about.
as for primaries in the middle of the AOE/ST...i thoroughly enjoy Fire. Fire Sword Cicrle is a bomb, it has a good animation, a great sound, and does good damage. Dark Melee not so good on AOE, but kills ST supersupersuper fast. broad sword has great ST damage. electric melee + shield charge is the reason people are making electric/SD scrappers...i've seen it in action, and it's good for group killing, once a minute or so. dunno about inbetween. katana is a safe bet for good middling damage on ST/AOE. dual blades is a fun set...my DB brute and DB scrappers are both super reflexes, so were very tough to level up because both powersets consume END rather quickly. my scrapper is only 16, but he's a "flavor" toon..i called him IIIII (roman number V) in honor of Vendetta, but the lack of endurance is a pain. i remember why i stopped playing my brute at 38, now. hah! as for the rest of the primaries, i know very little. i believe all of them are capable of soloing AV's.
as for a seconday that needs IO's to be manageable? i dont quite understand what you mean. do you mean "not an endurance hog"? if thats what you mean, then you want either regen or willpower.
and again, anything is possible with scrappers, IMHO. just about any combo can kill an AV given enough INF to throw at it. some demand alot more patience to go to 50 with, than others (i made and retired 4 BS/DA scrappers since 2005...highest was 32). in the end, pick what you think sounds like fun. i chose fire/willpower when the either the primary or seconday (or both!?!...its been so damn long!) set became available, and it's been my most favorite toon to date, even more so than my very first 50.
good luck!
I'm just going to give you some nice powersets from my personal experience:
Spike is a great melee power set, super high in AoE damage and that is always fun.
Katana is great for some single target damage and it has a few AoEs(I think its been so long since I've played that toon)
Broadsword does some nice heavy damage with some AoE's which are nice.
Dual sword is friggin awesome aswell.
For armors...Invulnerability is pretty freaking tough if you ask me, probably one of the toughest.
I haven't touched Shield scrappers yet but if their like anything like a tank shields, than they are very offensive and pretty tough as well.
EDIT: I think Fire spines are still pretty insane as well. They use to be gods lol

I dont know if what you want really exists in a scrapper combo.
All powersets combinations will solo pve content like a champ.
Spines is the only set for pvp, unless your talkin fight clubbin (which is horribly lame). And thats only cuz impale has range and an immob on it.
Same for /regen. Thats the only really survivable scrapper secondary.
Other sets will play ok, but pvp is best with ranged powersets I believe.
Id work on one of the blaster/defenders you usually play if you wanna pvp.
Otherwise its spines/rgn.
AV solo'n is kinda the same position as pvp. Some sets work much better than others. Ive a 500 million influence ma/da build that sucks solo'n AV's and crushes in regular pve content. Dm/sr can solo AV's with just SO's.
fire/rgn as mentioned above might be as close as your gonna get to meeting your 3 qualifications. And at pvp/AV's is where that toon is gonna be weakest.
Just my opinion.
My favorite combo is Faceplant/DebtCap with the TeamWipe Ancillary

I'm going to throw my vote in for katana or broadsword as a good mix of ST and AoE (each has a full AoE and a Cone AoE, and also an ST attack that can sometimes hit more than one enemy if they are directly behind each other -- very narrow cone. Each also gives you two excellent high-damage ST attacks). Spines leans too much in the AoE direction for me, and Martial Arts is mostly ST (although I love MA for stylistic reasons).
My other experience is with Fire Melee, which... I forget if it has more than the one AoE off the top of my head, but it's a very nice offensive set.
I have experience with /regen, with /invulnerability, with /SR, and with /willpower. Invul feels toughest to me, but I like all four sets, they all have their strengths. So far my experiences with Willpower make it seem like a high performer in most situations but it can come up short in a few situations where the other secondaries would really shine.

Back on topic, with Regeneration being what you want to bring to PvP, I'd suggest Katana/Regeneration. Katana makes Regen a lot more survivable by adding a lot of melee defense, plus it has good single-target and at least passable AoE damage. It's not the best in large crowds, but it'll solo just fine, and take down AVs just fine.

I'd go Fire/Fire/Blaze. Good survival once you have SOs, gets really good when you can get recharge bonuses pushing Healing Flames to the 15s mark or lower. With only three toggles (well, if you don't have set bonuses for KB prot, Acro could be considered necessary) you don't really have end issues, especially after Stamina and SOs, certainly not after Consume. Toss in a build up power that lasts twice as long for all of your Primary and Ancillary damage types and you'll be able to really pump out some quick damage.
Here's a quick SO-only build I worked up for you:

Positive recovery with an end redux in each attack means you'll have enough end for just about any situation solo, and when teamed, you'll likely have some form of recovery buff or means of getting blue back, even if it means you pause in your attack chain for a few seconds to get some end back. This build is also very open to IO slotting, getting more +recov and +rech to have HF up pretty quick. You can also get rid of Acro (and SJ, though you may want to keep CJ for the rare Immobs) by slotting 2-4 KB IOs (one in each toggle, one in temp protection, one in CJ if needed). This will help your endurance even more, as well as opening up slots for pool powers like Tough/Weave.

*facepalm*
Fire/regen is one of the best PvP scraps out there so don't listen to this guy. Spine/regen is a good powerset though for pvp but you specifically said you don't want spines (and it would be very tough to solo AV's on a spines, albeit not impossible). Fire is also great for AV's and still has nice AoE (Go FSC!) A Fire/SR can probably solo AV's cheaper than any other combo but SR is terrible for PvP.
If you want to have PvP ability, AV soloing ability, and still be strong in AoE, you are going to want to pick Fire/regen. Built with high recharge it will be very strong. Check the guides section because I believe there are lots of guides on fire/regen since it is so popular.
If you decide not to PvP, you may want to consider claws (which is pretty bad in pvp due to its fast animation times and highly resisted lethal damage)
Based on the info (which came really quickly, thanks!), I think I'm gonna have to try a Fire/Regen, then if that doesn't work, maybe a BS/Regen. You all were really helpful in gathering this.
So, I guess the naming rights go to DaveMebs or Lith for my new Fire/Regen (if you'd like them, of course)?
Lith can choose. I rarely come up with creative names. Most of my toons are named something like "Tanker Mebs, Dark Mebs, Arctic Mebs, etc."
Hey all.
Most of my experience in CoX has been with Blasters and Defenders, and I feel like it's time to put down the nukes and buffs for a little bit and strap on the boxing gloves. I've always really wanted to try a scrapper, but everytime I start one, I end up not liking them for some unknown reason. So, I thought I'd come and ask the forum gurus for some help picking out sets that would fit what I'm looking for. And now, a list!

My suggestion...
Fire/Regen
or
Katana/Regen
When your ready to IO, get as much +RCH as you can.
MOG should be up enough to give lots of defense.
Fire Melee will have issues against AVs like Inferno (I believe), and FIRE ARMOR PvPers.
However, Fire Melee won't have issues with redraw.
I'd go the Fire Melee/Regen Route for that issue alone.

It also allows you to pvp well. Regeneration is the best secondary for scrappers in PvP and Katana is the second or third best of the primaries.

Ive watched dm/sr vids back in I3 n I4 solo'n AV's. I dont remember if insp were used and which AV's but I have seen it.
Its not called melolee for nothing in pvp.
Ive spent 1000's of hours in pvp in all iterations in this game. I'll play any toon and that fire/rgn wont get any attack on me if I dont choose to let it. /regen is the only reason to consider it for pvp.

Are you saying you can take any toon and not let yourself get hit by a fire/regen? I would love to see that

- My main desire is a soloing toon. I'm tired of needing teammates to soak up damage or deal it, since I sometimes only have time to play at weird hours. So a secondary that provides good mitigation over utility/damage boosts.
- Would like a primary in the middle of the ST - AoE continuum. Spines just didn't deal the ST damage I sometimes needed, but it is most definitely awesome to knock down a dozen minions at once.
- I'd like PvP to be an option, as I would like to eventually experience it.
- While I'm not made of Influence on my other toons, I am definitely willing to eventually spend quite a bit on this toon. Though I definitely prefer not to use anything but generic IOs until 47. So, preferably not a secondary that needs IOs to be manageable as a soloer/leveller.
- EDIT: Almost forgot. I've always wanted to solo an AV, but isn't this more or less possible with any set selection with a decent build?
