bar none my favorite combo of powers, eliminates almost all irritations the game has to offer...except fear, blindness and confusion...which are pretty rare.

My Best version was my last version:
The Super Centurion - basically a Roman themed electrified "Superman"

Endless endurance, immune to endurance sappers, virtually impervious to energy attacks (lots of enemy groups to play god with), strong against Psionic attacks, fast cycling Foot Stomp and KO Blow. Endurance Sapper to tame rowdy crowds. Tough Enough for almost anything and able to dish out quite a lot of damage, burst and sustained.

Laser Beam Eyes (with -Res Proc) and Flight with Afterburner rounded him out perfectly.

Made him when I heard the game was ending, well into incarnate content now, but I shelved him to try one last Brute
  2. staff mastery is wonderful.

it gives you tools for different situations, use them!

myself i hate downtime and form of the soul virtually eliminates downtime for me with even the most end hungry secondaries. case in point: maneuvers, tough, weave and combat jumping with dark armor before level 30 and running around non-stop smash - was never able to accomplish that before.

staff mastery makes for more SMASH. SMASH is what makes a brute.

it's not just worth taking, it's a milestone.
  3. they did insult your mother. they insult all our mothers.

resistence sets have a lot going for them and feel steady. they tend to have interesting toys and need defense. get some defense powers and you'll be a hard target with fun toys. good times.

ran a staff/elec to mid forties really fast without even trying. feels solid all around. might try another with a variation on the power selection.

working now on a staff/dark, mid 30's now, tough bugger but i hate spending so much time/effort on the blue bar. funny, i never realized the rikti could cause butt-hurt.

time to light up a staff/fire, fire is so squishy....probably great to team with. should shore up staffs weakness...damage.

staff is a really, really great set and well designed but to make up for all the aoe they brought the damage level down for balance i guess. can really feel it mid levels. chipping away all day at bosses. sky splitter + precise strike + guarded spin is all i do against hard bosses. focus on the boss in a group and aoe the minions down around you, then when it's just you and him get real conservative and stick to the sky splitter + precise strike + guarded spin combo, works for me.

anyone done any numbers on staff vs katana? wondering if katana does more damage overall on a brute.
  4. I always gravitate to the high damage output melee toon in any game. Stalkers did not live up to this before, they seem to achieve that now (at least it feels right now).

The limited AoE hurts, but Assassin Strike is so amazing it pretty much makes up for it.

I am concerned about the fact that the entire AT is all about one attack though....

    SS/Dark

This is what i'm working on right now, essentially the same as thedarkeone's build stats but with force feedback procs in most attacks, no Death Shroud (although that is highly recommended by most) and a solid 12 KB prot.

The OP's build looks fine to me, might want to work on adding more defense. Are you PVPing with this guy?

You have to remember that there are a lot of people out there who are used to click and forget sets likes WP/SHD/SR. When presented with a complex set like DA, they are automatically turned off by it or simply don't know how to utilize its combination of powers. Truth be told, you *can* build a DA brute to surpass any of those previously mentioned secondaries, it just takes a good bit of trial and error as well as inf.

The supposed endurance problem with DA is almost a non-issue these days with all the +end/rec IOs available out there. It's not like these IOs are expensive either. My level 50 Fire/DA brute doesn't have any endurance problems unless he's in a really long single target fight such as AVs, which is not all that common. He has all of the IOs that your build has except I got Numina's proc in place of Miracle's proc. The Theft of Essence proc almost always fires off at least once when I'm fighting against large spawns (which is 90% of the time, even when solo). At times I even pop off Dark Regeneartion right after rushing into a +6/8 spawn just for the sake of recharging my end bar even though I'm not hurt.

Now I did pass on CoF and picked up Darkest Night from the Soul Mastery pool instead. The reason for that is because he doesn't have softcapped S/L defense (39%) so the various -tohit/acc/dam compoments from DN, Gloom and Dark Obliteration has better synergy. That and Darknest Night is auto-hit while CoF has a low base accuracy. In anycase, don't let the nay-sayers doubt your DA brute. A lot of them base their opinions on outdated information and false perceptions.
    That's what i'm talking about!
  7. Loving all the info., thanks for that build Emberly good insights. Dechs and Nalrok both of your guides were very helpful, exactly the stuff i needed to hear when i made this post.

One thing that confuses me on some of these posts...why play /DA if you aren't using the powers that make it unique? CoF, OG, CoD, Soul Transfer...those are the "gimmicks" that made me interested in the powerset. Without the bag of tricks wouldn't it just be better to play plain old /Invul or even /elec?
  8. GRATS!
    Sounds very cool.
    May we see your build?
  9. Thanks You All for your replies! Very informative. I now feel confident moving forward with this character as a "first man in, last man out" "TAUNT THE WORLD AND LET THE DEVS SORT EM OUT" kinda brute

Any suggestions on my build in the original post? I think it looks good and would be interesting to play: tough, with a couple of tools for flavor and a little toggle swapping for different situations...not your usual tankin brute i'd say.

Trying to read guides at work, feelin naughty
  10. Will review the guides tonight, many thanks! This is good news, added my build to the post before i saw these responses.

I will have to consider working Death Shroud in.....
  11. First, i'd like to thank Twilight Snow for her helpful comments on my last post (DB/DA), didnt want to bump the thread because ive moved on to a really outstanding SS/DA brute (Thank You inherent Stamina!).

Second, I was hoping someone could enlighten me on whether DA has a taunt aura and if there is anyway to use the defense and immobilize prot. offered by Cload of Darkness (CoD) while being "Tankish" in a group...i.e. can the stealth be "suppressed" somehow?

Thrid, why don't i see more DA Brutes? Is it just the end issues or is there a nasty suprise waiting for me later Currently at 24 with a Miracle +end, Perf Shift +end, Theft of Essence +end and of course the lovely inherent Stamina...feels good so far

Including my build if anyone has any suggestions
    Thanks in Advance

  12. Working on a new Dual Blades / Dark Armor Brute, i want him to be "Tankish" i.e. able to take point in a PUG comfotably if no actual Tank is around. I don't expect him to be the toughest, just tough enough

Build feels expensive, but if he works out well i don't really care about the cost. Choice of Death Shroud seems like a wasted power pick unslotted but i can't think of what to do there

  13. Interesting build, I like what you did on a number of things. I'm no master builder myself but kat/regen was the first toon i ever made it past 20 with in this game (back in the summer of '04). Back then kat/regen was much loved and discussed on the VN boards. Only concern i'd have is the lack of Flashing Steel...such a glorious, glorious power to have early on, especially soloing.

Good Luck with your experiment, and enjoy the ride!

    From Wikipedia: KENSEI
In ancient Japan, a kensei (剣聖?, sword's saint; sometimes rendered in English as Kensai, Ken Sai, Kansei, or Kenshei) was an honorary title given to a warrior of legendary skill in swordsmanship. The literal translation of "kensei" is "sword saint". Thus, the term is considered by some to imply a higher degree of perfection (possibly also encompassing a moral dimension) than the more commonly used kengō (剣豪?) or "great sword." This is not to be confused with the word kenshi (剣士), meaning "swordsman".

(anyone here ever play Baldur's Gate 2 back in the day?)
  14. I'm playing a KM/WP Brute right now, not alot of experience with IO sets, but i'll make some comments.

Your build would not have enough endurance for me, i like to play non-stop, but ymmv (literally).

The Gladiator's Armor +def unique is quite rare and expensive...thought i read it went for several hundred million when it was even available. Unless you already have one, i wouldn't have it in my build.

I don't really see an attack chain, not that i ever use a specific one.

With s/l soft capped I can't see you going wrong with */wp.

As pretty as KM looks and feels it does seem rather average (if you have Quick Strike on Auto it's interesting how fast it fires off behind Body Blow and Smashing Blow...almost so fast it "hits" targets that Body Blow and Smashing Blow killed). I like Force Feedback's +recharge proc in Quick Strike, but I see you opted out of that power. I am considering not taking Concetrated Strike because of the activation time (don't like the animation either) and using the first three attacks with Burst and Focused Burst.

Not seeing any real issues with your build, if you can build it, it will be tight.
  15. Wow, i think we've grouped before, you on Champion? "Gypsy King" here.

That is a beautiful build man. How do you like EA on the blueside?

Only thing that i would worry about is it would seem like you need a filler attack, my Kin Melee toons always take the first three. I would probably run into end issues with that build, i just don't show my blue bar the respect i should ;P
  16. That's an interesting build there...

Isn't Weave in the wrong place?
  17. I like the points you make. All but one. The heal in ED CAN do 50ish percent of your health bar IF you can survive in a crowd of 10 enemies long enough for it to activate. Pre-softcap that is not easily done with /EA. I read somewhere that it was meant to help when you're grouped facing large spawns. From my experience facing 3 or 4 enemies at a time, when i'm in need of some healing it feels meaningless. Granted, i'm looking at it the wrong way.

Anyway, my point was to qualify the circumstances required for it to do that kind of healing.

    You give me hope Rylas
  18. EA has issues. It simply has too many weaknesses for the utility of stealth (an ability anybody can easily acquire in the PvP zones as a temp power). A Defense Set with low DDR, PSI Hole, Hard to Cap Typed Defense, virtually meaningless heal in Energy Drain, Fury building is hurt by Stealth, no resist to end drain, hard to justify passives, ... Needs some love like /Elec got recently. I'd love to see a defense based Electric Armor that trades Lightning Field for Energy Cloak - nuf said.

My NRG/NRG is 33 now and he looks really, REALLY cool! Alas, he's by far my weakest Brute and the only one i dred teaming.

Twilight_Snow has good insights on the subject of /EA and a very readable guide.

After playing a stalker it feels like a kinda tough Stalker, after playing a /WP Brute it feels like a waste of time and energy.

Going to see what I can do with him though.
  19. Wow i actually did not expect such insightful and useful responses after all i had read in the forums about EA.

Gavin, your suggestion on Stamina, will do! But why is Haste going to be that important?

Twilight, Thanks for the build suggestion! I have a couple 50 Brutes and several in the 40's but I’ve never IO'd anything yet, so I really needed an experienced builders work to reference! Somehow I had not read your guide before - very informative! You have a very scientific approach in your writing, LOVE IT! Clear and informative without any sense of bias, I wish the news was like that (it was like that in the 20th century)

I'm definitely going to make some changes to the build.

It would be easier/cheaper to get Kinetic Combat Sets vs. Touch of Death? I was actually going as much melee defense as i could get. I've got a few Katana and one Broadsword Scrapper and it made me think of how nice Parry's Melee DEF is...but it's weird....doesn't all melee have a Smash/Lethal component?
  20. I know these powersets are sub-par, I am asking for the builder community to help me make it all it CAN be!

Intended for soloing primarily, not trying to tank with it in groups. I require Energy Cloak (the whole point of the build), swift and hurdle (no travel power, only ninja run). Took Stamina because i am an end hog!!!! About 500 mil INF to play with.

Any and all suggestions welcomed, many Thanks in advance!

  21. This is my first attempt at a Scrapper build for what will be my first 50 Scrapper. I wanted as much recharge and defense as i could cheaply get without gimping his already less than optimal damage output (fire melee without the swords).

Any suggestions would be welcomed! Thanks in advance!

  22. Katana/Broad Sword and Shield Defense?

I'm currently trying out Kat/ELA, have a few ELA Brutes and wanted to see how it fared with DA. A Damage Aura, Power Sink's endless Endo and Lightning reflexes make some of the builds i've worked out look really strong without being very expensive. But of course, ELA has no Debuff Resistance.

Mid's says WP gives Debuff Resistance, i suppose since Heightened Senses grants Defense bonuses it only makes sense it also give some resistance to losing it.
  23. Arkadian_NA

    fun brutes

    Brutes make fun Tanks!

Take the first 2 attack powers from your primary, and every power from the secondary that helps you survive as soon as they become available. Damage aura secondaries are not as tough in general. Pick a big hit attack and any AoE that appeals to you later on. Build for defense and let Fury build rapidly as you do the old 1 - 2, then when you've gathered a nice group around you and Fury is high drop your bombs, wash rinse repeat. Grab Taunt when you can, find a team and have a blast!

FA/WP is the route I went with this. Very Tankish toon, those tiny attacks hit with surprising power, they are quick and take little endo. My plan is taking scorch (just look at that DPS) and the 3 sword attacks then focus on getting WP close to or reach the defense softcap.

Not the most efficient setup...but you asked about fun. To me this is the most fun a Tank could ever be.

    Also,

Super Strength/Electric Armor fears no Rikti, is a one-man-army against Rikti, Arachnos and Freakshow. Play him like the specialist he is and you'll wonder "Is this cheating?"
  24. Thank You all for your replies. I feel I understand the game and these Powersets much better from just what was posted here.

I have turned to reading the Scrapper Forums for more information on these Powerset choices. Umbral, Werner and Bill-Z-Bubba have alot of really good info. Looks like I will respec into something of my own design and try to attain the infamy needed for a more Umbral Billion kind of thing

    This is gonna be fun!

Oh, by the way, is there anything more annoying than Malta Sappers?
  25. Thank you for your reply.

I have no planned attack chain. I usually click on whatever power is available and appropriate to take out the target most efficiently. Is 100 hp a second even possible? I have yet to make anything in Mids that comes near that.

What I really need are some cheap build examples and tips. I've read Heraclea's (always makes great posts) "Live Through This" from the Brute Guide and I just don't understand the build when I look at the "Totals for Self".
