What works with staffs?
Uh-huh, uh-huh uh-huh, Oo-oo!
Sorry, no experience with Staff here, but love your forum name!
Mid's has some brief info on the actual benefits of the different forms, and Guarded Spin could provide about 18% defense to Melee and Lethal which might argue for a Resistance based set (or Willpower). You could then shore up defenses through set bonuses.
Apparently a little low on ST damage, but above-average AoE damage. I think I would try for a sort of super-utility toon, but it might just boil down to your concept.
Good luck, and Death to the Pixies!
additional stuff.
1. I saw em at the wharton center. I win
and questions
5. Assuming I was willing to like..coherently farm hero merits(I have many ill/X trollers. Ill/x trollers tear through the 1st story arc like crazyness) for IOs, and was willin to spend like...500 million(not counting the brute ATO. For the brute ATO, I'mma just convert kheldian ATOs) to cover the ato gaps, are there any major reasons to go tanker over brute?
6. How much typed resistance or defense do you need of a certain flavor to be..noticable? like...if one more piece of the set gets me .7% fire res, is that worth a slot? 1.2%, 1.2% def? How much total defense/resistance to a type do I need before it matters?
Staff has very good AOE and very good self-buffing ability.
Defensive sets that go well with it:
In my opinion, the best fits are either fire, electric, or dark.
Dark armor is okay on a brute, IF you get the endurance IO in your self-heal. Otherwise, dark armor stinks pretty bad.
Electric armor is quite a lot better, due to the regeneration boost and better distribution of resists. Plus, electric armor has infinite endurance, versus dark being end starved without the IO and barely reasonable with it.
Fire armor is best on a brute. Good self-heal that doesn;t destroy your end bar OR rely on bad guys in range. 'Okay' levels of resist that staff can buff. And fire has burn. OMG, it has burn and a taunt aura.
Why are you looking at anything besides fire?
Staff is AOE and self-buffs. Fire needs buffs, and provides epic levels of AOE on its own merits.
This is a win/win.
Yes, a staff/fire brute is going to be a bit light on single-target damage, to which I reply: BURN.
I think your should pick one that you think maybe fun or fits your concept.
I went Staff/Regen not that I would recommend it. I went Regen because it was the only brute secondary I have not played. Sometimes I consider re-rolling into a Staff/Fire.
Elec is really great all around for what you are looking for.
Staff/Ela is 100% win. Slot for defense and live forever...
- Xyzor, Lightning.Rod, Kagyx - Rubber Mulch / Wholesale Candy - Freedom Server
lolwhut? slotted guarded spin brings me to melee softcap? I'll depend on a 13 second buff? Silly Cheese is basically my entire jam. Signin up for staff/elec named Joltstrike, and I plan on leveraging legit psychic resistance into just DEVASTATING Carnies like they insulted my mother
they did insult your mother. they insult all our mothers.
resistence sets have a lot going for them and feel steady. they tend to have interesting toys and need defense. get some defense powers and you'll be a hard target with fun toys. good times.
ran a staff/elec to mid forties really fast without even trying. feels solid all around. might try another with a variation on the power selection.
working now on a staff/dark, mid 30's now, tough bugger but i hate spending so much time/effort on the blue bar. funny, i never realized the rikti could cause butt-hurt.
time to light up a staff/fire, fire is so squishy....probably great to team with. should shore up staffs weakness...damage.
staff is a really, really great set and well designed but to make up for all the aoe they brought the damage level down for balance i guess. can really feel it mid levels. chipping away all day at bosses. sky splitter + precise strike + guarded spin is all i do against hard bosses. focus on the boss in a group and aoe the minions down around you, then when it's just you and him get real conservative and stick to the sky splitter + precise strike + guarded spin combo, works for me.
anyone done any numbers on staff vs katana? wondering if katana does more damage overall on a brute.
I'll be rolling a Bio/Staff Tanker when that comes out. But I'm not sure if you want to wait for Bio Armor or not.

leanin pretty close to softcap, and except for the gladiator piece, it's all pretty close to within my budget atm
I would have suggested Willpower, but Ela is a good choice too. I also probably would have suggested playing a Tanker if you want to tank; it's certainly doable on a Brute, but you're going to be relying a bit more heavily on your support teammates.
And Shield Defense is actually the best secondary for /Staff... too bad it's unpossible. =(
Hmm. You actually aren't leveraging one of your better mitigation tools in /Ela -- the direct heal and regen buff from Energize. It's definitely not /DA or /FA's self-heal, but it's no joke either.
Drop Stealth for Maneuvers.
Are you really married to Power Surge? I see the 7.5% rech bonus but it seems like quite a bit of investment to get there. It's too harsh of a crash to be an effective tanking power.
Is there a KB hole in Ela nobody told me about? I keep seeing -KB IOs, and I don't get it. Basically same question re status resist IOs.
And your resists...
Okay, this build is kind of a mess. Not like, 'a steaming pile,' but it needs work. I'll see what I can do.
Ty man. This is my first tanky build, I know my 'troller build is solid, and honestly, I just want like..3ish amazing toons that I exemp down for taskforces.
.....uugh. now I'm debating having this toon just be a flatout TANKER, cuz he'll always be rocking teams
I'd say go for it. I've tanked on my /Ela Brute but... well, not all that well unless I have really good support. It definitely can be done, but it's really hard to come up with a tanky build that wouldn't just be easier and better on a Tanker.
I've got some IRL stuff to do but I'll try and give you a rough version of each if you're still interested later and no one's beat me to it.

My next tanker is likely to be Bio/Staff as soon as Bio goes live. I think that combo will be strong from the start and will keep getting better. It won't be as strong against debuffs as SR or Energy, but it will probably excel in all the places Willpower excels while scaling better with recharge buffs.
|
@Rylas
Kill 'em all. Let XP sort 'em out.
Let me pick your brain a little here, if I may. What would you consider being a better IO investment. I've considered Def for S/L, but all the resistance Bio is capable of makes me wonder if it's all that necessary. Maybe a little bit of defense to soft-cap E/N. Then I thought about Recharge being the main focus along with Accuracy bonuses. Having Ablative up more often does sound pretty powerful. Any way I go sounds good. Any thoughts?
|
For Bio/Staff I would probably focus on s/l/e defense first, and lots of recharge second, looking for a happy medium. I think it comes down to getting Ablative and DNA recharging quickly, and having reasonably high defenses to avoid getting hit by too many deleterious debuffs, and keeping a reserve of insps for the situations when cascade defensive failure is an issue. You won't need many insps for anything else, so you should be able to quickly build up good sets of them for the occasional problem.

ULTIMATE REGEN GUIDE I22
I just joined this fairly epic SG on virtue. One of those gigantic "there are six versions of the same SG in the coalition cuz there are THAT many people here" supergroups.
Soo... logically, I've been running Task Forces like they're goin outta style.
The PROBLEM, though is that my collection of characters is predominantley controller, and with the new water blasting powerset, everyone and their mother is avoiding tank-y characters like they had the plague. my TF commander accolade had...seven melee characters across a sample size of six full-to-eight runs
Seven.
This makes me sad.
So..logically, I'm rolling a brute. I'm just stuck on the secondary for him
The goals of my brute are
1. Primary is staff fighting. Staff fighting seems like it'll be cool. You breakdance, AND have forms. What's not to love?
2. I'd like my secondary to be in the dark/electric/energy/fiery/super reflexes/regenration/willpower pool if possible. The other ones just don't...do anything for me. I just can't decide between em.
3. I like the thought of building that "one perfect AT" character. So as a result, I plan on having to often exemplar this character down. I don't want a toon that RELIES on like..a lvl 28 ability to tank. I don't wanna be "awesome unless I'm running posi, synapse, or citadel".
...I want to be "awesome"
4. Could I get a list of the generally good sets from a defensive POV? I'm to used to running on controllers, fortunatas, and crabs to have ever bothered looking at melee IOs from the PoV of "survivability".
