Based on my redside experience last night, I really have to agree and cannot stress enough that the trip to snowy Croatoa to defeat Lord Winter et al., seems like something that your average PuG will not be able to accomplish.
What I foresee is that this year, most of my alts will continue to open presents, contributing to the count to spawn a WL, but mainly to accumulate the other stuff you get from that activity (canes & temp powers). Heck, I may even go beat on the WL that spawns.
But I probably won't spend the time to go defeat Lord Winter. That's 15 (?) minutes that I could spend doing something more fun than getting Held & Footstomped.
3 or more PuGs can do it together - I was on a couple of runs blueside that did so - but on some servers getting those 3 together in the same zone consistently will probably not happen. That's just not how we tend to operate in this game.
So that leaves a big amount of dev work to change the event that will go primarily unused, very unfortunate.
I really like the mechanic of the Big Bad summoning helpers, and the need to defeat them before you can go further to defeat the Big Bad. But the mag 100 holds and insta-death Footstomps, etc., stripped all the potential fun right out of the encounter.
My poor level 39 Corrupter died at least 6 times last night while 9 villains (full team + 1) were trying to beat the timer and take Lord Winter down. I was spamming my AoE heal like crazy (when not Held) and we still all had to make multiple trips to the Hospital. 6 deaths in 15 minutes, plus getting held to inactivity, means that I was actually contributing very little damage to take him down, but that was kinda the case for the rest of the team as well - a brute faceplanted loses all built-up Fury.
So I will be opening presents for canes again this year, same as always..... -
Just finished 3 runs, two blue, one red.
Blueside -
Run 1 - Level 25 Blaster (Energy/MM). I had read about what to do on the forums, so I just opened presents until a WL spawned (by another team). Raced to the spawn point, got a team invite, killed WL. Hit the present, zoned to snowy Croatoa, nothing spectacular - again, because I got the briefing from the forums. Zoned out using the portal, back to SC no problem.
Run 2 - I ran a level 16 Psi/MM Blaster, SSK on a team led by a lvl 50. Our team was 5-6, there were at least 2-3 other teams in zone on the event. Someone spawned a WL, took him down, zone to snowy Croatoa. Once there, we were able to take down LW to75%, got the dialog about the WG, found the WG & took him down - same at 50% & 25%. After the first run, I was looking for a specific visual clue about the WG and was able to spot him as a silhouette against the background. I was also able to see a visual clue that LW was phased, but it was much more subtle than WG coming in.
We stuck around to test the kick bug, and I was kicked to under the map. LOC 2549.3 -2000.0 1620.6 (after falling, which took me by surprise and was taken down to about 1 HP, unlike falling in Ouro). I started flying towards the Perez Park gate and was popped back into Steel before I got there. Final LOC 4161 0.0 1128.0.
Run 3 - Redside. I started on a level 25 Stalker, but since about half the presents I found were on rooftops in Cap, and the Frostlings run away down to the street, that was no fun, so I switched to a level 39 Corr (Fire/Therm). It was hard to gather a team, so we were not clear whether we needed a full team to spawn the WL. It did finally happen once we had a full team of 8 (almost immediately after getting member #8).
Team makeup - Leader was a lvl 50 Brute. We also had 2 Doms, 3 Corrs, and a second Brute. One Corr was/Kin, I was /Therm, so a few buffs & heals, but not many. This was the same team Killbot is talking about - he was the level 50 Brute Leader.
Taking down WL wasn't a cakewalk, but not too hard.
Once in snowy Croatoa, we had a lot of problems. It seemed like we were almost continually Held and there wasn't anything we had to break that. Domination didn't break it even (per one team mate). I hadn't noticed this as much on the 2 blueside runs because I was running a Blaster who could still blast due to Defiance. Nobody on the redside has that ability, so when the massive Holds went off, our team did ZERO damage for several seconds at a time(and they seemed like minutes). It took us almost 5 minutes before I could even see LW's health bar budge. It was more like 10 minutes before we brought him down far enough to call a WG.
We were all kicked from the zone while fighting that first WG. At least we weren't kicked off the map,we all zoned into Cap just fine.
Overall comments - blueside it was fine. Not enough explanations, but we could get teams to do what needed to be done. The presents seemed a bit sparse and a couple of locations I remembered from last year didn't have a present every time I flew by (but maybe I was beaten to them).
Redside - it will be very difficult for villains to complete this for a couple of reasons:
1 - lower populations will make it harder to get the 2-3 teams required to complete all the tasks.
2 - the massive mag holds will paralyze teams with almost no one able to continue to do damage during the holds - no Defiance, no Clear Mind (question - does CM break these holds? I wasn't on a team with an Emp to see). Even the level 50 Brute was routinely getting held. Once Held, we died quickly.
I doubt I will even do this event more than once on my badging Villain - and only because she is the Fire/Therm Corr I tested with. Presents on rooftops mean that my meleers will not be hunting them. This particular Corr has a couple of tools that *might* help accomplish bringing LW down.
We need lots & lots more explanations about what people are to do. It was not intuitive why the big present didn't do anything right away when clicked - I can see folks wandering off before they can zone. We lost the dialog about summoning the Guardians, and many missed the fact that LW had phased and wasn't taking damage because of all the flashing and noise involved in any GM fight. The Northern Lights were another wrinkle (I still don't completely understand what's the deal with them) we couldn't handle redside - someone must have know what to do blueside because I didn't notice them as much there.
Rename Lord Winter, please? While typing this up, I was having trouble keeping my abbreviations straight, it's very confusing. Someone on Test tonight suggested "Fimbulwinter" which is a great idea. (Thanks Muiramir).
Those are first impressions. I'm sure that I will recall other details after reading what others have to say. -
Quote:Ubiquitous where?I rather thought that the term was ubiquitous enough that an explanation wasn't necessary. In my opinion, it specifically refers to OOC/non-canon discussion of said relationships, rather than saying "OOC/non-canon relationships." Shippers works for me.
I had never heard it prior to these 2 threads and had the same reaction as Karl & BBQ. It's very grating.
I sometimes like to engage in this kind of speculation, trying to extrapolate beyond the last page of a book. I was kinda amused by the line of books out now about the further adventures (as detectives, no less) of Fitzwilliam & Elizabeth Darcy. Those types of stories are my favorites in the MA. -
OP -
FYI, your choice of color for your text is horrible on the reddish CoV background.
Please consider using a different color - light green, yellow, & orange work out pretty well on both the blue & red backgrounds. -
Quote:I am totally in favor of this system. I hate outlevelling and the fact I still have contacts in my list that will not talk to me anymore.
Ouroborous is just not the same.
Outlevelling on purpois..! Sorry... I think those EB's and AV's in those missions are designed for you to get help in form of a team. In this caase you are able to look longer for a team to help you. You have time enough as you never really outlevel it anyway.
Outlevelling on purpois is standing directly against all requests from players that at some point this game starts to become too easy. I think some challenge should stay. And fighting an EB or AV should always be a challenge. That includes SeaWitch.
So fight her even con yourself and let me do things my way. You find your challenges where you want them - heck, fight her +4/+8 solo if you want to.
But this game is structured to let me play it without a team (for 95+% of the content), including the change of dropping AVs to EBs when soloed and the ability to outlevel them to make them green or even grey.
And all these "requests from players that at some point this game starts to become too easy"? I haven't seen any more of those than responses that the difficulty seems about right, including several in this thread alone. You have the tools to make things as difficult as you want (unless you want insane difficulty, then this is likely not the game for you).
You don't want to outlevel content - you have a tool for that as well - turn off XP. -
Quote:Nope. I agree that psionics, etc., are believably natural in the context of this game. But then, I already stated that I don't limit myself like firespray does. Also, am I the only one that considers stuff like psionics and empathy to be one of those "natural" sets that "regular" humans can take, in the same vein as crazy acrobatic martial arts, enormous ninja leaps, and chi blasts?
I mean, we live in a fantasy world so I see nothing inherently wrong with taking the movie/anime approach and saying that humans can be telekinetics and learn to fly with the right training. -
Quote:And that "just a normal guy" control powerset would be what, perchance? You really like to nit-pick don't you.
Sure, it's possible to come up with a concept that would let you define pretty much any powerset as 'natural' if you wanted to. But that doesn't change the fact that if you want to play a normal human character with no superpowers, some powersets fit that archetype better than others.
You said yourself that most of the concepts of a non-superpowered human controller fit better into a tech or science origin (i.e. a normal dude using advanced technology). Wouldn't it be nice to have a control set that fit the 'just a normal guy' archetype without all that mental gymnastics?
Not that I'm conceding the idea that "natural" can't be extended to any powerset the player wants it to be extended to. You can limit yourself however you want, but don't expect the rest of us to play that game with you. -
Quote:Thing is, if some of the stuff turns out to be Base Editor 2.0 (the one they dropped because it was so bad), having him list all the stuff NOW would get a really nasty reaction from some people.
So, instead of investing in a wheel of cheese the diameter of Jupiter to go with all the potential whine, he's simply sticking to a nice, safe "no comment" right now.
I'd rather be told about the stuff when it was closer to completion (meaning it'd been vetted in-house to be working-ish), rather than having it promised and then pulled if it was sucktastically problematic.
But that's just me.
No, it's not just you. (I understand your tongue is firmly in your cheek, but I couldn't resist)
I'm actually kinda surprised that Sunstorm made the post that he did in the other thread, but really glad that they are trying to manage expectations a bit better than they have in the past (i.e., don't have any expectations of anything any time soonish). -
My Katana/Regen Scrapper is Magic origin - her sword is a magical construct/artifact.
My AR/Dev Blaster is Mutant origin - she uses an Assault Rifle, but her "super" powers are her ability to Fly and take more damage than the average person on the streets.
As most are saying, origin is a hook to base your bio on, not something inherent in a particular powerset.
As for the themed Boosters - all of my characters can blow themselves up (via "Self Destruct" from the Tech booster), but the reason/mechanic of what is happening in each case is different based on what I dreamed up for the character. -
Quote:The thread to suggest new powersets is located at the top of the Suggestions & Ideas forum, titled "Lady Jade's Powers Suggestion Thread". There are lots of well-thought out ideas there as well as some truly laughable ones. You may want to check out that thread to see if there is something you can build on.I looked and could not find a thread on this topic so I thought I would start one. I was considering new powersets that could be implemented in the future. Perhaps the Devs will see a cool idea and run with it based on this list.
Just for fun I would love to see a powerset designed at "borrowing" others' powers. Kind of like Rogue on the x-men. I think it would be very interesting to see the possiblities.
What are your ideas?
Can you expand on your idea of a "Borrowing" powerset? You need a set of 9 powers and an idea of which ATs would be the best candidate for them. -
Any chance of a Thursday or Friday night?
Saturday & Sunday nights are harder for me to get to, but I would really like to finally take part in a Hami Raid after nearly 5 years in the game. -
Quote:News Flash - Walk is intended to be mainly for RPing. If walk is a live feature in process I could understand that, nobody likes buggy animations if powers don't work with it yet. But generally a blanket power-suppression kind of turns Walk into something of an RP-only thing rather than a genuine slower form of movement.
Not to mention powers like Hide, Stealth and Invisiblity would work pretty well with Walk. In fact, the whole issue with people running WAY too fast after being Speed-Boosted would get the ability to actually slow the f*** down. And for that reason, allowing powers to be active during combat and speed boost would be most helpful indeed. -
Wait, guys, let's back up a minute. Looking at OP's Reg Date here - he might be asking how to get on the Test Server, not how to get into a specific Beta.
We have some specific ways we refer to things because we have been here so long, but new people have been known to use a term that we have assigned a certain meianing to in a way we would never think of using it.
OP - if you are asking how to get on the Test Server in order to check out the various patches they are testing from time to time and to play around with your character's build - here's the thread you want:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/annou...php?f=576&a=16
You need to check in the forum for the Training Room/Test Server, which is where I got this link.
OTOH, Fleeting is right - asking to get into Closed Betas is likely the best way *NOT* to get asked. -
Didn't they already test the 2009 Winter stuffs last Thursday on the Test Server?
It's late to try to devise anything new for 2009 at this point since it's likely to start in less than a month's time - development time is much farther out than that.
I wasn't able to test it, but, yes, they made several changes going by what was posted on the boards. -
Quote:This.Poor BaBs. If he thinks a normal woman walks like that they need to unchain him from his desk and let him out more often. That exaggerated wiggle is far more ****** then heroine. It'll go over gangbusters in Pocket D.
I know I have seen many presumably male posters on the boards salivating over the wiggle, but as a RL female, I just can't stand to watch my characters do this animation. Not that i was dreaming of walking, but now i highly doubt I wil *ever* use it.
I haven't checked out the Male or Huge "walk" yet because I can't create any characters with those genders because they both run like they had a stick up their tushies. <sigh> -
Quote:It removes the possibility of someone intentionally outleveling a mission so that they can complete it more easily.
Well, when I first posted my question about the OP, I was feeling kinda wimpy about wanting to be able to outlevel some EBs to Green - but I'm feeling much better now, since there are a couple of other veterans doing the same thing.
An optional switch would be fine, but I don't know how hard it would be to program, and frankly, I'm not sure it's necessary with the other options to avoid outlevelling contacts/content and the ease of going back thru Ouro or on an alt. -
I did end up trying to lead some of the Banner events - usually when it was pretty apparent only a couple of people knew how they worked and I had studied up on the mechanics.
More often, though, I poked someone else to do it - telling the Leader to "call it", etc. Of course, there were also those times when I ended up forming the Banner team because no one else would do it. But for me, that was a very low investment of my time, since I never took that team beyond the zone we were in at the time. -
Quote:Well said, Sam.You know, maybe my small reference pool is terribly biassed, but I just can't see these brand new level 1 newbies hankering at the gates to rush to 50. What I HAVE seen in the new players I've played with has been... Well, a desire to play the game and have fun. I don't know if that's true or not, but based on my experience, what new people want the most is to kill stuff. Questions, as I've seen them, go as follows:
*How can I be awesome?
*How can I die less?
*How can I kill more?
*OK, where can I buy this game?
I've seen this response from several new players, the latest of which kept being amazed at me getting a couple of levels a day and taking a week to get to around level 20, so I don't think he came into the game expecting, or indeed able, to make 50 in no time flat. From my experience, new people don't so much want to level up, get leet loot or go raiding as much as they just... Want to kill stuff. And, you know, they have a point. Some of the best fun in this game can be had if you just let go, flip out and kill stuff
Obviously, I could very well be mistaken on all counts, but that's what I've seen.
While I understand the concern of OP - perceptions are very important, and if new players have the perception that PL'ing is how the game is played, then we have a problem - I honestly haven't seen these new players myself.
I thought we were done with these types of discussions when we mostly stopped talking about AE Babies. Where are these new people who are being deceived by the dirty rotten PL'ers?
Every time this comes up, it just seems like another tempest in a teapot, to be worried over again and again. And it's been coming up periodically over the past nearly 5 years. -
Quote:This is me as well. The entire point of a pickup group is that it can be put down again just as easily. If it's been going for an hour, I'm likely loaded on stuff to sell off or craft, or have met my goal for that character and ready to switch.
I most likely joined the group on a whim anyway - I tend to solo or duo more than team. I'm probably about socialized out by the time what you posit happens (an hour or two later by your scenario).
I might take the team for a mission or two, but no more than that. -
Quote:It removes the possibility of someone intentionally outleveling a mission so that they can complete it more easily. Don't really have any objections beyond that.Quote:That's a possibility, although one can always set the difficulty to -1 for those troublesome cases or, failing that, simply drop the mission.
For some AT/pwerset combinations, I have at times levelled twice to get the mission green. Your original concern was the effect of turning a mission in your list inadvertantly from green to gray while teaming, so you did recognize that was one strategy used by some. Can't drop it, but want it green, not blue. -
Ya know, I started to go thru this list closely to answer some of the things that GH didn't mention - then I realized that the list itself has so many duplications of requests (internally, as in repeated things, including the entire first 2 divisions) that it became too difficult.
I also began to realize that the OP was unaware of some other things that had already been given in Issue 13 (such as Invention Salvage storage shared by the SG and separate bin permissions based on SG rank) or that removal of the base raid pathing and our new stacking techniques had already solved (such as floating TP beacons out from the walls).
I have to applaud OP's efforts in trying to get the list for us, but this isn't the list I want to Devs to keep as our "wishlist", sorry. -
Quote:BTW - don't use the "Wikia" version of the Paragonwiki. It has not been routinely updated by anyone other than the RMT sites that adverstise on it. It was abandoned by the folks who do our Wiki over a year ago (IIRC).I've been reading this book on the history of the Roman empire and I found something rather interesting.
The last emperor of the Western Roman empire was named Romulus Augustulus. (Ruled 475-476 AD)
Hmm... Where have I heard a name name like that before? Oh.
http://cityofheroes.wikia.com/wiki/Romulus_Augustus
Not to rain on your parade about your discovery, but there are tons and tons of Classical references throughout the game. -
Quote:Actually, when PvP was introduced, you *did* have to do those missions and go into the PvP zones. Those were the same "Intro to" missions that we still have to do before some of our contacts (at least blueside) will deign to give us anything else. The ones like "go see the field analyst", "go meet Jim Tremblor", etc.
You know, I've seen that sort of argument in multiple MMOs and I really don't understand it. As long as the missions in question aren't required to complete a story arc then as far as I'm concerned it doesn't matter. If you don't want to enter the PvP zone then you don't do the mission, no one is forcing you to do it.
It's not that going into a PvP zone was required to finish an arc. It's actually that here (way back in the bad times) you had to enter the PvP zone to even get the next arc. -
Quote:I'm totally copying this for the next 20-30 bazillion "please fix KB" threads....Sounds like the problem here is melee toon movement not being suppressed enough. Let's let the team member -- or, better yet, any team member with knockback powers -- be able to choose to supress all melee toon movement or not.
Or maybe, change run forward to run backwards, just so they don't move towards next group with taunt aura blazing.
I know running around the map during combat is important for that "Hero Feeling," but unfettered melee toon movement is just harmful.
.
Thanks!
