I don't see this as a hypothetical question of "let's see how much we're willing to pay, so that the corporates know how much they can charge us." I'm viewing this as a display of just how much this game is worth to this community.

Thanks Obsidian_Light and Thirty_Seven! Already replied to both. Glad to know the word continues to be passed around!

If I may offer constructive criticism: I would edit it so that it is not from your (the player's) point of view. It is just a perception thing. When it is from the perspective of someone on the inside, it sounds more preachy than news-like. I would think we want people to see "hey, look what social media and community is doing for something as simple as a video game" rather than "Help us save our video game!"
-
As I am currently on a Mac, this is impossible for me to try (maybe I can swing BootCamp...) I am not really a fan of the game's art style, but the playing mechanics sounded somewhat interesting. If I get a shot, perhaps I'll try it.
Regardless though, that thread is very touching. -
Quote:Actually, Alpha Wolf was very good to put it the way he did. He simply said they were trying to negotiate. I think the goal was to keep us in "the know" as to what is going on, and to let us know that they, too, are working to find a solution.I'm actually surprised any Dev came out to say that at all. Things are very touch and go right now if my guess is right. I am positive that Paragon is doing everything it can to stay in the fight, but they had to keep things as neutral as possible. State the facts and only the facts, and keep everything else under their hat. Any attempt by them to rile the fans up could be seen as tampering and might reflect badly in any ongoing negotiations.
Still, I am glad to have it confirmed. -
Sith_Rose, sounds like you are very much behind the effort towards finding a solution. I strongly suggest getting in touch with Tony V. You can find a number of his topics on the first few pages of this forum. He and the team he has already assembled have already formulated both preliminary and backup plans. I'm sure he would love to have one more guy onboard.

That is very comforting, and invigorating. Yay for morale boost!
Thanks GG! -
I will keep an eye on my next credit card statement. However, considering all other CoH purchases were denied as of Friday evening (other people tried to buy points and such with no luck), I think their "all subscriptions have been halted immediately" phrasing holds true.
-
The only confirmation I have is this:
I cancelled my sub on Friday, despite them saying that all subscription renewals were ceased.
My rollover date was the first of the month, so it has come and gone.
I am still VIP, with access to all that that entails. -
Quote:Gotta agree with GG, here. There was no chance at redemption for Paragon Studios; they came into work to find out they no longer had jobs.Yeah, while the "NCSoft sucks!" attiude is understandable when emotions are running high, it's important to remember that this is a totally out of the blue U-turn on their previouly supportive policy towards the game - and they had such confidence in the developers that they even green lit a new MMO from them, so something has clearly happened within NCSoft very recently to make them change that attitude.
To use the child analogy: Yes, NCSoft adopted us, nurtured us, and stuck by us through hard times, but (without further public details) it appears they just threw up their hands, said, "That's it, I can't take it any more" and put us out on the street. A child whose parent abandons them, especially after the parent spent years "being there," has every right to some negative feelings towards said parent.
If they come out and fix the situation, via selling off the game to keep it going or some other solution, our feelings will probably change. But this sudden kick to the curb is not going to fly. -
The problem with something like this, in my opinion, is cost. Say it costs $15 a head to cover the space and food costs of something like this. I am sure that is $15 that people would rather donate towards (say) the purchase of the IP or something of the like. Not to mention, depending on the magnitude, this is not much notice.
A more effective thing would be to do a sort of outdoor thing. Some big free-to-access spot in the designated cities, where people can buy or bring their own food and beverage, and then get pictures and footage that way. (For example, Chicago's Millennium Park) Sure this brings a host of new variables onto the table, but I think it might be easier and more feasible in the long run. -
Quote:Seconded (or third-ed?).I'm the same - although we've gotten used to the ramped up flow of content since Freedom launched, I'm totally ok with an extended "quiet period" if another publisher takes over the game.
The game would have a future, that's worth it enough for me. And hell, this game still has PLENTY of content that I have not touched, so I am sure I could keep myself busy. (Just started the first of the DA arcs, for the first time, last week. Haven't touched Night Ward. Haven't done Penny Yin's new TF, etc.) -
Last night was a fitting "beginning of the end." We had a full league and a fairly smooth run. More DCs than I've seen in a long time though.
I want to take a moment and thank anyone who has ever come out for these. I think I speak on behalf of the entire Talsorian Guard when I say it has been an honor to host these weekly raids, and you honor us with your attendance and consistent gratitude. We will continue to host these every week until the servers shut down.
Also, SAVE THE DATE: The Talsorian Guard's anniversary is November 12th, so the weekend before (the 9th-11th) we will be hosting an entire weekend of activities, both in celebration of our one (and only ) year of existence, but also as a final send off for the server itself!
Updated for next week. -
QR to the OP:
Thanks M_C_M. Good to know that the game-funding world did not just look at our news and shrug. I will keep up hope that someone will pick up our game. -
I think I've posted this at least four times in other places, some on these boards. But I will say it again:
I am very upset with NCSoft for dumping City of Heroes, but I cannot logically hold any ill will against that decision. They made a logical business decision, I grant that.
What I find inexcusable is the manner in which they handled it: no three month grace period to give one of their longest running titles a chance to rally, no ideas for bringing in more revenue, not even two weeks notice for the Devs! Paragon Studios went into work on Friday to find out they no longer had jobs.
Immediately shutting down a game may be good business. Immediately shutting down a person's livelihood is just bull****. That is my problem with this whole situation. -
I just posted a topic about this. My sub rollover date was yesterday (specific time was last night). But I logged in this morning to find my VIP status remained. At least for the time being, it looks like subscription types are frozen and won't lapse.
-
The specifics:
Subscription type: Monthly, automatic renewal
Renewal Date: the 1st of every month
Time of Day: Usually by 8pm Central time
When I read the news on August 31st, despite reading that all subscriptions/purchases had been halted, I immediately went to NCSoft's website and cancelled my sub. (Just so that I could say I did it. *shrug*) I knew that my subscription would be gone one way or the other by the next evening.
However, it seems I was not the only one unsure of whether or not VIP status would remain once the time for which we had paid had expired. Since I am undoubtedly one of the first to have their subscription date come and go, I figured I would be the guinea pig. I logged in this morning (Sept. 2nd) to find that I was still VIP! (Still had all characters slots unlocked, still had usable Incarnate powers.)
So there it is, the point of this topic: At least for the moment, it appears that whatever subscription type you had as of August 31st will remain. -
Quote:Right now, the only I am only aggrevated at NCSoft for the manner in which they closed the studio. (i.e. no warning, no chance at redemption, etc.) They're a business, they made a logical business action, just not the right way. This is one of the plans that's being considered - the biggest hurdle would be getting NCSoft so sell/give up the IP.
If it ends up that they just sit on the IP, or want an outrageous amount for it, then I will lose complete and total respect for them. To hold onto something simply because it might flourish in someone else's hands is miserly. If they think it is worth money, they should find a way to maintain it. If not, get rid of it.
I know this is all logical, and most of you agree with this. More just me restating things. -
There is already a thread going in the General discussion forum which has all of the efforts currently being organized.

Quote:Yes, but considering they are working on Champions Online (because I can say their name on the boards now), it probably isn't going to work out since having a studio work on two games in the same genre probably isn't a good idea. The good side of this line of thought is, if it was about money, then it is more likely that Cryptic may be able to acquire the game back... IF they see any interest in doing so.
They are the most likely ones to do so since they would not face any issues with the license of the engine, since... its already theirs. -
I'll just add my voice to the masses and say that I am behind you, Tony. Sending you good vibes and crossing my fingers a solution can be found.
-
Yes, from a business standpoint, it makes sense. I give them that 100%.
But to give absolutely ZERO notice to the team (and players) of your longest running title (near as I can tell), that clearly still has plenty of people playing it and willing to pay, is a dick move.
Want to save face? Give a public statement! Give an ultimatum. Give your loyal Studio and players a chance to save their game.
