Superior Spider-Man

Dan Slott did an interview at this year's New York Comic-Con and 2 interesting points were revealed about the Marvel Now Superior Spider-Man relaunch.

1. Peter Parker is not the Superior Spider-Man

2. MJ and Spider-Man will be getting back together

Personally I'm just bummed out with this news because Marvel has done this story arc to death before, hell just about every comic publisher has done this before. Pretty much its just a question of how long before Peter reclaims the mantle. Slott has gone on record saying that ASM 700, the final issue before the relaunch, will end with something drastic and terrible being done to the Peter Parker/Spider-Man that he'll have to go into hiding, but does it really matter. All it is just some hokey setup to have someone else take over for a while.

Also forget, this Spider-Man will be grim-dark

Looks like they are looking for new fans.

Looks like Slott's twitter is getting bumrushed from angry fans. He put up a tweet saying that he was misquoted and what he said is being paraphrased with different meanings. Make of it what you will.

So... MJ will be with Spider-Man, but Peter Parker isn't Spider-Man? That can't be right, can it?

This is also the first I'm hearing of another relaunch, this time at 700. What's the frikkin' point in all of this? Especially if they're not continuing the Amazing title? They'll revert it back when they're nearing issue #750 regardless. Ugggghhhh,

And... Someone other than Peter Parker in the suit? Really? Blasphemy. Didn't they get that fix with Miles Morales and Ultimate Spider-Man?

Is Scarlet Spider continuing past this? If not, I'd guess Kaine would be the new Spider-Man.

Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.

Here's the cover to issue 2

700 will be the last issue for Amazing Spider-Man. According to Slott, 700 will have something very horrible and tragic happen to Peter that he will have to go into hiding to avoid the fan rage that the issue will produce.

Lots speculation on what it is. There's speculation it will involve Doctor Octopus since issue 699 has him in it, and the solicit for it states that Doc Ock enacts his final revenge on Spider-Man in the issue. 700 will probably have Peyer dealing with that act of revenge.

Right now there's a thread in the /co/ of 4chan posting a theory that Doc Ock amputates the arms and legs off of Peter. Forcing him to get cybernetic replacements.

Peter could be adopting a new secret identity. He'd still be Spider-Man, but not as Peter Parker.

Methinks Peter Parker dies in issue 700, but (as BP stated) it's a ruse to throw people off and allow him to start fresh with a new identity. Slot's statements would totally bring that all into focus then.

Slot on 700: I will have to go into hiding...
Slot on Superior: Once the first issue comes out people will go, "ooooh" and I can show my face.

Huh.

I actually remember a short-lived storyarc in the '90s where Peter made a webbing cocoon and symbolically "shed" his Peter Parker identity, becoming Spider-Man full time. Mayhaps Slott is trying something similar here?

Some more bits that came out during NYCC. Slott said that the focus of stories for Superior Spider-Man will be on the dark and weird, but not the grim-gritty you would see like in Punisher or Batman. He referenced 'Death of Captain Stacy', 'Death of Gwen Stacy' and 'Kraven's Last Hunt' as examples of dark Spider-Man tales.

See, I always figured that the whole Ben Reilly thing was a way to get back to the light-hearted Spiderman of the past. Over the years everything Peter went through gradually turned the comics darker and darker. It seemed to me that Ben was a way to go back in time, in a sense. Fans wanted to keep Peter, though, so suddenly Peter became all upbeat again (even after the "death" of his daughter, who was never seen or heard from again, despite still being alive (although I stopped reading not long after this, so maybe they did actually kill her, but killing a baby off would kind of suck)).

Highly recommend taking this one with a very microscopic grain of salt. Supposedly this tweet was put out, and then deleted

But it creates the speculation that Miguel O'Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 is the Superior Spider-Man. Some people think it might be likely since last weeks Marvel Now Point One involved Agent Nick Fury dealing with a time traveler. So it might be possible that Miguel is some how becomes stranded in our timeline.

Already an article on Newsarama that seems to think that it's just Slott trying to troll and mislead the fanbase. Honestly I really woudn't mind O'Hara taking up the mantle of Spider-Man.

I'm a fan of those stories and if the re-launch can come close to them I may pick it up. But the reason those stories stood out (I'm talking the first two mostly) is that they were in a run with generally 'lighter' stories, all dark and no light ends up being blah blah in my opinion.

Like many I grow tired of these big re-launches, it not only alienates old fans (like me) but shows that they lack imagination and have just run out of good ideas. So they go the lazy route and make a big dramatic change to attract new readers....you know what - bigger is not always better.

Sadly that rarely ever effects the bottom line. Juts look at how many CoX players are now playing GW2 and promoting it to boot!

i have to admit i rather enjoyed Spider-Man 2099, and wouldn't mind seeing Miguel show up in the regular (now with all-new minty freshness!) Marvel universe. Sure, some of the plotholes and gaps in logic were reserved for transporting UR-500s to the launch pad, but it was a fun read and i liked the Miguel/Spider-Man character.

I actually quite liked the Big Time story arc from Slott's run. It had a lot of classic Peter Parker's troubles in it despite giving him a career boost. After that there were a couple crossover events where I lost the thread and stopped reading because I'm not into buying 6 other books just to see how the story plays out. Not in this age of Wikipedia plot-synopses.

Left to his own devices, though, Slott seems like he can write a very entertaining Spider-man story.
