Other MMOs?

So since CoH is shutting down, the group I play with have begun looking for another MMO to play that fits our needs. However most of the games we can think of just don't fit what we're looking for. So does anyone know of a game that is F2P (not buy the game or sub), allows for character customization and has a bare minimum of at least 6 people allowed on a team if not 8+ people allowed on a team?

I apologize if I've placed this on the wrong board, but player questions was the only place I could think to put it.

Thank you in advance to anyone that can help.

There are very few games, MMO or otherwise, that allow for CoH's level of character customization. Champions Online is the only MMO I can think of that is close. APB may have had even better customization, but I'm pretty sure they shut down ages ago.

I can't really answer your other questions, since I've barely wet my toes in the MMO pool.

The nice thing about F2P and Hybrid games is that they're free. You can download and try as many as you're willing to download.

While none of them really suit me, I've heard good things about Champions Online, Lord of the Rings Online, and D&D Online, and they're all Hybrids like CoH - you can play for free, or pay a sub, or use the microtransaction store to buy extras.

That is a real tough requirement right there. CoH is the only MMORPG I've played that allowed eight on a (non-raid) team. There's probably something out there that allows regular groups of that size, but I couldn't say what. Five tends to be the standard maximum team size.

APB got shut down in 2010, got bought by a new publisher and RELAUNCHED as APB Reloaded in 2011.

Haven't played it, know little about it, but I had more or less the same reaction as Roderick when I was MMO shopping last week and the salesguy brought it up. "I heard it shut down."

"No, it got bought and re-released. It's on 'Steam.'"

"Huh. How 'bout that?"

When I Googled it just now, the game came up as advertisements on both Newegg and Amazon -- looks like you have to buy the game itself to start playing.

[Side note: a game that got bought and relaunched successfully?!? *crosses fingers and hopes* Does this remind you of anything? ]

So I knew lotro didn't have a monthly sub, but I didn't know the game itself was free. I always wanted to play it, being a huge lotr fan that I am, but I never really looked into it because I didn't want to put money into an older game.

To those that have played it: How is it? How do the graphics compare to more recent games? Is combat fluid? Is there good variety in specs/builds? How's grouping?

The graphics are pretty if your computer is new enough to support their 'ultra mode' version of the textures (it's a separate installation option). The graphics are sub-par if your computer cannot handle their high-end textures. The background vistas are gorgeous on either textures.

Combat is nice, builds can vary wildly but if you go too far from the norm you can easily start gimping yourself.

Grouping is terrible for me (others laud its good qualities). Four people to a fellowship (team) - that's three people plus you - hardly even worth the time to set up IMO; that's not a team, that's a couple people with a private chat room.

A LOTRO fellowship maxes at six people, not four.

The one thing we are all so "super" spoiled by is travel powers... all these other games want you to slowly... so slowly... jog across the map. Usually while fighting anything that you jog overly close to...

CoX was my first MMO, I'm REALLY not used to seeing a chest high wall and trying to figure out how to get around it....

I read an article that called what you're describing as 'Joy of Movement.' Lack of it can kill a game or make you less enthused about playing it.

CoX definitely has "Joy of Movement." GuildWars didn't.. you had to walk every where.. Aeon had it a little bit when you could finally fly, but even that is limited. For me, 'Joy of Movement' makes a big difference in whether I like the game or not, even console games.

Regarding "Joy of Movement" and LOTRO, there is one slightly mitigating aspect, and I do mean slightly. There are waypoints across the map which you can set as "home" and use a spell to travel there, once every so often (hour? don't remember). If you get a house, you can tp back there. Also there are "stables" where you can hire a mount to trot you to nearby waypoints while you nap, get a cup of drink... and for some further waypoints you can purchase "fast travel" which teleports between stables you've visited once.

In practice it means the first time to go further than you've been, it's slow. After that, there are shortcuts. Not enough, but *shrug*.

As far as things eating you while you hobble across new territory, sometimes getting killed is advantageous - if you "go to the hospital" (called something else) instead of trying to get back up, the magic circles where you revive are per territory - I've advanced across a map that way, not always intentionally...

It depresses me utterly to think this will likely be my fallback MMO, after. It's pretty and I love the background but play is painful after CoH.

They do have rain, though.

One important thing about LOTRO - don't jump of cliffs, it can kill you
To used to SJ in COH and I found that out hard way.

Game is completely different then COH, but if you like Tolkin's books you can enjoy it. Travel is slow, even if you get mount, but there are some really beautiful areas in game, that can make you forget about slowness.

Thanks for the LotRO info, everyone. As you might guess from my forum name I'm a huge Tolkien fan, and LotRO is the only game I'm even vaguely tempted to try if CoH really does close. I probably would have tried it already but I never felt I had time for both it and CoH.

I've started a guy on Landroval in LOTRO too. I'm level 8 and so far it seems just like GW/WoW to me. I do love the LOTR back story though so I'm giving it a chance to grow on me. No grouping (fellowshipping) yet. Combat is OK although I'm a little annoyed that you have to physically face your opponent to fight him. (realism be damned!!) CoX is definitely more newb-friendly, technically. I've already had to consult the LOTRO wiki a bunch of times to figure out what the heck is going on.
