What ever happened with the CoH movie?

I can't find it now, but I know I read something somewhere that suggested this was still being planned, and that was less than 12 months ago.

Essentially it's in 'Development Hell' and probably something that will never make it out. Odds are you have a better chance of George Lucas releasing a bluray version of the original trilogy minus all his edits in the past years.

This just gave me the oddest idea. What if a movie company wanted to acquire City of Heroes? I know warner brothers has a video game divison now.

Reminds me of when people get ahold of a good name just for the sake of owning good names.

Aside from the name acquisition, all I've ever seen on this is rumour and conjecture - no solid sources to back any of it up. In fact, I've seen NO external updates whatsoever, not even anything to say it's been held up, cancelled... the thing was never even announced.

That acquisition was years ago now, to boot. Put simply - this isn't happening, even *IF* once upon a time it might have been.

One of the reasons why I tried to get the license myself (no joke) to make it. Sure, it'd have been all in machinima (I can't animate), but I was storyboarding a script, figuring out voice actors, and had made enough contacts with musicians that were willing to score any project I wanted to work on.

That would've been awesome to see!

This could've gone a couple of different ways, ranging from the ugly to the bizarre.

THE UGLY: Some coked-up Hollywood numbskull reads a headline in Variety: "Superhero movies make big money!" He digs thru the studio's list of intellectual properties and sees something. "What is this, City of Heroes, a video game or something? Whatever, good enough." But because CoH isn't as high-profile as Marvel, the project gets a budget of $516.32 (including effects) and a week and a half to film. Starring Nic Cage as Statesman, Cameron Diaz as Sister Psyche, some pro wrestler as Back Alley Brawler, etc. We get a CoH movie that makes the garbage on the SyFy Network look like "The Avengers".

Or...

THE BIZARRE: Some coked-up executive likes the general outline of the story (the Rikti Invasion) but has no interest in superheroes. He decides to do the film as a rip-off of modern alien invasion flicks like "Independence Day" or "Battle: Los Angeles". We end up with a well-funded and promoted Rikti Invasion movie that may be a blockbuster, but makes no mention whatsoever of superheroes or Paragon City. "Rikti" becomes a household word. Rikti dialect replaces l33t-speak on the Internets. "Directive: consumption of my: underpants, d00d-being."

My head hurts.

I'd be more worried about how movie companies tend to look at tie-in video games the same way they do tie-in happy meal toys and thus make horrible games.

You know, you probably still could. Do people care enough to sue a Machinma? I don't think they would...

Well, Warner Brothers has gone a nice path with Batman lately.

#1: Make awesome batman movies.

#2: Make awesome batman games, not actually based on the movies, but their own things. (Arkham city and asylum)

And this is just idle speculation, but City of Heroes would probably fit in with them.

Awesome hero game? Already made. They could probably make some splinter titles.

And then there's some awesome lore moments not actually in the game that would make nice movies: Rikti invasion? Brass monday?

And any successful movies would have a side benefit of getting people interested in the game they're based on. Kinda like how batman feeds into itself.

Just an odd thought.

More a matter of needing a budget. Voice actors (at least the ones I know and would want to work with) do not work for free, nor do most composers. Plus with enough funding, I could afford to take the year or so off work to focus solely on making this.

Fun fact: Warner Bros. used to have a video game division in late 70's and early 80's. It was called Atari.

Here was my general outline of the CoH movie I was goofing around with just for fun:

Newbie hero comes to town. (In my outline, he's literally called Noob.) He's a magic-user and gets in on the Omega Team thing when the Rikti attack. I had a lot of overly-cutesy dialogue that needed to be fixed, but the structure was Superhero Movie 101 -- new hero comes to town, acts as the stand-in for the audience, learns the ropes, finds a motivation truer than the one he showed up with, many heroes get killed during Rikti invasion, Noob decides to make the ultimate sacrifice because he's one of the few who can do it, remaining heroes clean up and honor the fallen and missing.

Throughout there are hints of what's to come, such as a Vanessa De Vore having a mask collection, a few people ending up missing, Dr. Vahzilok working so hard to save dying heroes that he has an emotional breakdown... all to set up the sequel that features the Carnies, Dr. Vahzilok doing his undead shtick and a full-on zombie invasion, culminating in Hero 1's return.

It was pretty rough, but I think it had some decent enough bones to it.

Well, we won't be playing this any more. Let's do it. Your husband can do at least 5 voices.

John has flat-out insisted that he and only he is allowed to voice Recluse in my videos. And considering that Mike Kleinhenz (my first choice for Recluse's voice actor) has died, John wins by default. (I have a 'video' of all the voice actors I'd dream cast for this project.)

Pretty much exactly what I was thinking when Ironik said it was mostly wanted for the Rikti material. That kinda made me do a facepalm, because an alien invasion to introduce a new superhero franchise in film/TV, etc sounds like the kind of thing that you do because you're terribly desperate to think of something for your heroes to do. And that's assuming the film decided to use appropriate CoH superheroes at all as opposed to generic gritty gun-slinging action stars (who are all probably wearing black/leather) because some research study tells them that's what they need to maximize profit.

Not that I have a problem with the Rikti story or anything, but that as a film? Ehh... the alien invasion has been grossly overdone in the past 10 years, and nobody seems interested in giving it much of a unique spin. If they wanted to be different instead of doing the typical "Aliens come in cool ships, aliens start blowing everything up, humans think of a way to stop aliens" plotline, they'd be better off having the movie take place post-invasion. I think everything that happens involving the Rikti after the invasion has a lot more potential to be original than the invasion itself.
