It was an incredibly educational experience.

Psssh. "Easy" for you to say.

  5. This whole thing has given me a great idea.

Instead of the server shutting down on the 30th, what if they just ban ALL OF US on the 30th, instead? That could be much more fun. And that way, the servers stay on, we just can't log onto them....and our characters live to see another day. We take the ban bullet for our characters.

*wait a minute....what if that's ACTUALLY what's happening, and they're just not telling us.....*
  6. The wife and I were still debating what to do. We've concluded most likely w/Ms. Liberty in Atlas Park where it all started, saluting Paragon.

However my gut reaction would be - if they had that in mind as an initial strategy; close the game down, sell the IP (and I'm still very unclear why that needs to happen) - then why give it such a long sunset? Surely if that was their preferred course of action, then the best would be to arrange the sale in secret previously, shut the game down VERY quickly, sell, and allow the new owners to do what they will.

Some guesses - to be sure that all assets are liquidated? Clear all outstanding customer subscriptions, account balances, and credits?

I want to say thank you for any/all efforts to those that are trying. And thank you even to those who reject, why? Because you reject due to emotion for this game, and deep down don't want to see it go, but out of frustration you're doubtful at this point. Well most of you, anyhow.

I enjoy this thread. Because it kinda epitomises the community. It's always been an outstanding community, and at some points fervently disagrees with eachother, but only out of love for the game and wanted it to succeed..

This ^. Exactly the same thing with me. The heroic theme that played when I first started playing. That played when my wife first started playing. That played when my kid first started playing. And that still plays for us all to this day. It's just.....the perfect music for a city of heroes.

The other thing that makes me sad....is all of our super hero characters, that personified feel as tho they are trapped inside this world, about to cease to exist, and I can't help them escape.
  9. This thread reminds me of the Bruce Almighty Evan Baxter scene...specifically starting at 1:40 of this clip....which is how I read some of the posts.....

  10. Angry Citizen, I hate to break it to you.....but this game has been called City of Heroes for 8 years. Have you had a problem with the name of the game the entire time you've been playing it?

The slogan to me plays on the fact that the game is a game of Heroes. And the characters within the game are a part of us, and so therefore, we are those Heroes, in the game. We've played heroic characters for 8 years. We're not saying we're firefighters, police officers, active military (tho by the way, some of us actually are...)....but we (our characters - an extension of us) are Heroes, and trying to save the game.

And also as a side note to all, this slogan reminded me about a song from back in the day. I have digitally dusted off "This Is What We Do" by MC Hammer from the TMNT movie. Thanks for the excuse to do so, TonyV.

  13. I'm late to this party. To answer the OP - No.

To ignore the fact the economy tanked at that time and blame MA, would be about as naive as to blame the tanking economy on CoH. Nearly every chart across the market looked exactly like that.

Plus, MA to me was one of the greatest things ever, and was yet another aspect of ingenuity provided by the developers of this game that separated it from so many others. It was (and still is) so much fun to be able to create your own missions, your own character stories/origins and lore, etc.
  14. So I'm sitting here thinking about what we really need to do....I mean REALLY need to do....is Skynet this sum-***** and somehow, use our characters in the game to take over control of the game from within. So if and when they try to turn it off, they no longer can. Because the Heroes in the game have become more powerful than their creators and taken over the servers.

I mean it's our characters who have the most at stake, right? They're the ones that are really fighting for their lives, here. So why don't we stop thinking about ourselves, and help them?

I started out thinking this could be done via our Heroes......but it could be more like a Villain mission. Or perhaps, what seems to be the best scenario, this is a time when both Heroes and Villains join forces, to save their own world.

So how do we do it? And does it involve any of us beaming ourselves into the game like some 80s movie, in order to help them with this mission? Any volunteers?

  15. I could never accomplish this. At some point I would get brave beyond my means and blow the whole deal.

Awesome job. I commend you, Quan Tee Fii XXI. You are a truly awesome hero.
  16. You reminded me of another.

There was this new Wentworth store (some sort of art store) that opened in one of our malls. Total double take. Obvious hilarity ensued when we went in to check on how our auctions and bids were doing.

There was a lady standing inside the store, I decided not to walk up to her and poke her, tho, probably would've been jumped by mall security.
  17. Wife and I constantly joke about getting a badge for successfully accomplishing something. She's a total badge hunter.

Recently we were reading a plaque in front of a statue, and I started walking around a bit in front of it. "What are you doing" "Why am I not getting the exploration badge? How do you trigger it?"

Other times if we're standing somewhere waiting, we catch ourselves starting to do the various hero stances.
  18. I agree with everyone. It has been difficult. I do the same thing, I log in....I cherish the moment....I take screenshots.....I want to play, but it's sad.

I feel like these characters me and my wife put so many countless hours into.....they're like pets of some sort....but even more than that, because they are our creations. With thought and story put into them.

Yet there they are, stuck in this game.....that I want to reach into the monitor and pull them out to help them escape. But I can't.

It's all very surreal. And it is sad. I feel everyone's pain.
  19. Here we go again, telling people how to feel right now.

I got news for you. Where there is smoke, there is fire. Where there is fire, there is emotion. Where there is emotion for a cause, there is effort. Where there is effort, there is a better chance of achieving goals!!!

You put out the fire.............you lose. You lose momentum. You lose the passion. You lose the care.

And I still stand by saying if NCSoft doesn't want people mad at them, then do some PR like any legitimate business knows how to do, and heal the wounds their own corporate decision caused. It's very simple. SAY SOMETHING. It's good to see that not only is it this potential profit and STILL QUITE ACTIVE fan basethey have dismayed, but also FUTURE business. Forecast is very important to business when making decisions and require good Public Relations.

People are rightly upset by the way this was done. The ball is in THEIR court if mad people somehow hurt their feelings, enough to ruin "negotiations". I'm not even sure how that is even logical.

"Well OK, we realize what a supportive customer base there was with this game, and how much money they are willing to still spend, we had no idea how they were so collectively bonded together showing such dedication to the game. Why they even all just bought the developers lunch. We missed out on a huge profit margin here, that while it may not be enough for us to justify, it may be enough of a money pot for another company to buy from us and support. OH WAIT WHAT IS THIS? HOW COULD PLAYER_HERO_X SAY SUCH A THING. I'M SO HURT, MY FEELINGS ARE HURT. GET ME A TISSUE. THE DEAL IS OFF!!!"

    Let's be realistic here.

Keep the fire going. It's going very well. Emotion is good. Focussed emotion, yes, that I will give you. Not some insane off the wall stuff, no. But focussed accurate emotion, yes. And the stance that because of the manner in which is was done, future business will be impacted? Definitely. Yet they can still resolve this, the ball is in their court.

It'd take NCSoft's lawyers about five seconds to win the case by simply saying "You signed it. Don't like it? Tough."

There's a lot of moments in history, full of things that became of what we enjoy today, that wouldn't exist had they followed that line of "thinking".

In fact, I'd be willing to bet this GAME that we post on its forums, wouldn't be here, nor as well as supported and developed throughout the years, had it not been for brainstorming and the bouncing off of ideas amongst a group.

It's something that is done each and every day in many walks of life.

    No harm, no foul.

THE UGLY: Some coked-up Hollywood numbskull reads a headline in Variety: "Superhero movies make big money!" He digs thru the studio's list of intellectual properties and sees something. "What is this, City of Heroes, a video game or something? Whatever, good enough." But because CoH isn't as high-profile as Marvel, the project gets a budget of $516.32 (including effects) and a week and a half to film. Starring Nic Cage as Statesman, Cameron Diaz as Sister Psyche, some pro wrestler as Back Alley Brawler, etc. We get a CoH movie that makes the garbage on the SyFy Network look like "The Avengers".

    Or...

THE BIZARRE: Some coked-up executive likes the general outline of the story (the Rikti Invasion) but has no interest in superheroes. He decides to do the film as a rip-off of modern alien invasion flicks like "Independence Day" or "Battle: Los Angeles". We end up with a well-funded and promoted Rikti Invasion movie that may be a blockbuster, but makes no mention whatsoever of superheroes or Paragon City. "Rikti" becomes a household word. Rikti dialect replaces l33t-speak on the Internets. "Directive: consumption of my: underpants, d00d-being."

    My head hurts.

    LOL! That's just about right.
  22. I know the amazing efforts that are taking place to keep this game alive, but I gotta be honest with some of you - you simply can not tell people not to be angry at NCSoft right now. It was their decision, yes a business decision of which we can argue all day if we agree or not with it being a smart decision, but their decision nonetheless. That's their right.

And it's the consumer's / customer's right to direct their disgust / dissatisfaction towards that business that made that decision if they so choose.

It's the duty of that business to perform what is called PR. That's, public relations. This is why corporations have a PR Department, or in some cases it's part of the Marketing Department. To deal with not only the advertisement and sales of the company, but provide PR with those things that aren't quite as pretty.

And so far.....I haven't seen diddley-squat of any type of PR or public statements. So if they want to help ease the damage they have inflicted upon themselves by such a decision, then they need to speak up and do a little PR and talk to us, the customers.

So far, all we've been hearing from is the developers, and actual staff they just laid off, as PART OF this decision that THEY made. Leaving it up to THEM to tell us about it...and NOT allowing them to say all that much more due to NDAs

I'm sorry, but that ain't gonna cut it. Not if you want to keep the future business of paying customers. The ball is in their court, if they don't want customers mad at their company name.
  23. Truly awesome. Thank you.
