Hip-Hop performers are not obligated to include Country & Western influences in their music, no matter how much Country & Western fans may feel it's essential they do so, or that it would be "awesome".

"But... but they're both forms of music! C'mon, Weezy, can't you just, y'know, make it a little twangier? Add some pedal steel guitar, rap about driving a truck or something?"

    No.

Hockey players are not obligated to include influences from baseball in their game, no matter how much baseball fans may feel it's essential they do so, or that it would be "awesome".

"But... but they're both team sports! C'mon, Bruins, you can get used to playing outdoors, on grass, in the summertime! Can't you just throw the puck around instead of hitting it with your sticks?"

    No.

Fans of "The Lord of the Rings" are not obligated to include "The Hunger Games" in their reading lists, no matter how much "Hunger Games" fans may feel it's essential they do so, or that it would be "awesome".

"But... but they're both books! Frodo and Sam are so, like, lame... can't you re-write it just a little bit, replace them with a spunky, plucky teenage girl with a determination that just won't quit?"

    No.

    Etc. etc. etc.

  2. Two things...

!) I, like others, had no idea that this, or any, CoH merchandise existed. So good job as usual on that front, NCsoft.

    2) I'd pay good money for a CoH t-shirt and I'd wear it with pride. Problem is, my money would be going to NCsoft, aaaaand that ain't happening.

No shirt, no shoes, no problem,

  7. Not a bad idea at all. Crowding might be an issue at times, but I don't know if it would be any worse than when an Issue went to Beta.

In fact I was just in there today tricking out C.C. with purples, procs, globals, all the goodies I can get my hands on. He's actually got some defense and resistances now (which makes me wonder how the hell I soloed him to 50 in the live game at all). Next stop, Empyrian Fred or whatever His name is, to rip Him off for all the Incarnate junk and PvP Sets I can carry!

Which of these non-Double XP events is running in its place?
  9. The idea isn't to get NCsoft to "take us back"... who would want the game to continue under them as a publisher, knowing they could (and will) pull the plug at any moment?

The idea is to blow the gaming industry's minds with our enthusiasm & devotion to the game. WE'RE one of those elusive Loyal Playerbases that the industry's been bellyaching about being so hard to find lately. Combine that with the fact that the game makes a profit... two patches (Issues 24 & 25, the "Fix Everything" & "Fix Everything Else" issues) full of game-changing adjustments, fixes, powers & content that ABSOLUTELY WOULD have lured back lapsed players & attracted a wave of new ones...

If some western publisher doesn't see the value (monetary & otherwise) in CoH, then this is an industry that truly deserves to go belly-up.

I've always said that CoH could be as big as WoW if it were promoted properly (note to NCsoft: Captain Sweatpants wearing a Statesman shirt on "Big Bang Theory" doesn't count as "advertising")... who's willing to STEP UP and test my theory? WHO WANTS MONEY?

I am, however, laughing my copper-plated *** off. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving publisher.

    "Avenge me, Son! AVENGE ME!!"

P.S. When I say "avenge me", I'm kidding. Just, y'know, so it's clear. It wasn't a CoH player anyways; it was the Chinese.
  11. This could've gone a couple of different ways, ranging from the ugly to the bizarre.

THE UGLY: Some coked-up Hollywood numbskull reads a headline in Variety: "Superhero movies make big money!" He digs thru the studio's list of intellectual properties and sees something. "What is this, City of Heroes, a video game or something? Whatever, good enough." But because CoH isn't as high-profile as Marvel, the project gets a budget of $516.32 (including effects) and a week and a half to film. Starring Nic Cage as Statesman, Cameron Diaz as Sister Psyche, some pro wrestler as Back Alley Brawler, etc. We get a CoH movie that makes the garbage on the SyFy Network look like "The Avengers".

    Or...

THE BIZARRE: Some coked-up executive likes the general outline of the story (the Rikti Invasion) but has no interest in superheroes. He decides to do the film as a rip-off of modern alien invasion flicks like "Independence Day" or "Battle: Los Angeles". We end up with a well-funded and promoted Rikti Invasion movie that may be a blockbuster, but makes no mention whatsoever of superheroes or Paragon City. "Rikti" becomes a household word. Rikti dialect replaces l33t-speak on the Internets. "Directive: consumption of my: underpants, d00d-being."

    My head hurts.

    Wind Control

And there I was feeling all lucky, having secured the name "Air Man", and on the highly populated Virtue no less. Even pencilled up a rough concept build based on the ever-unreliable Wikia's preview (Wind/Force Field Controller w/ Psionic ancillary so he could unleash Psionic Tornadoes). Total Concept Character, would stay permanently Invisible, always Fly/Hover and never touch the ground, etc. I was going to contact Fire Man about tracking down Water Man/Woman and Earth Man/Woman, if they exist, and forming the most kick-*** SG in the game. Oh well... (Or should I say, "maybe later...")

Also I raise a glass to "Shoxygen", who would've been (and may yet be!) my first Dominator (Wind/Elec/Mu). Hopefully these, and all of our nutty ideas will get a chance to strut their stuff in Paragon & the Isles.

    Later gators,

P.S. I'm gonna hang onto these names for now, just in case... but if we get word there's no chance of a reprieve or revival, I'll release 'em.
  13. Oh, great... solid Impervium armor AND every power available to Blasters. SHOW-OFF!

All kidding aside, thanks for sharing this kind of stuff with us. Looking forward to the Lore Question session, too.

    Where are you?

Just added Paragon City itself to its rough location in real-world Rhode Island. The geography's not a perfect match, but it's mostly not too off.

The Rogue Isles I'm less sure of. I always understood they were about fifty miles off the shores of New England, not too far from Paragon City, kinda-sorta, more-or-less... so I made my best guess. If any Lore Whores or even (ex) Devs know a more accurate location, let me know.

I was just about to ask if a Mac version was in the works... I'll take it that's not the case currently but could change...

If worst comes to worst, I've got Boot Camp (sans Windows, never used it)... if the hour grows late hopefully I can fall back on that.

    At any rate, thanks, Codewalker!

  16. I was wondering if they'd do this, since (as far as I know) Zwill, Hit Streak, & Freitag are the only survivors left in the building.

I gotta say, Zwill, you've got a set of solid brass, brother... coming on & facing the Community in the state everyone's in. What an emotional nightmare (And when a Dark/Rad Controller who specializes in Fear & Confusion senses an "emotional nightmare" comin'... DUCK!). And yet we'll still keep it positive and have a good time. EAT IT, Alleged End of the World!

Also -- As with Posi & Co. doing their "Ask Away" session, this isn't anything you "owe" to us, and it's appreciated.

See everyone in a couple of hours. One last time -- until the next time!

I think with F2P they were really hoping for a big spike in terms of people either returning or signing up for the first time.

Sadly, they did a pretty poor job of marketing the game.
If by "they" you mean NCsoft... "they're" outta the picture. Hopefully the game's next publisher will grasp its potential and advertise accordingly.

I think there's two sides to the issue: One is what we are willing to pay to save our game. Another is what prospective new players in the future are willing to play. If CoH was a $30/month subscription game, I really doubt we'd ever see any new revenue.
I hit "up to double" but I hear what you're saying. A $30 subscription would be lunacy, but I wanted to show that I'd be willing to cough up a few extra bucks.

The game was profitable at $15/month plus whatever they were getting in microtransactions at the Market. $20/month, plus the renewed interest in the game that issues 24 & 25 would provide, seems like it would put us in a pretty good spot.

NCsoft, along with the rest of the MMO biz, is strangling itself to death with greed & contempt for players. Even if they hadn't pulled the plug on CoH, the sub rate would've been going up soon anyways.

  22. Great stuff, Doc. I noticed the new Depth of Field effect in the cutscenes from the All New, All Now Kings Row story arc, and was DIGGIN' IT.

'Course, that was way back in the days when you could get on the Beta Server. Anyone else remember the Beta Server? Ahh yes, good times, good times.

"This world has been scarred enough by the sin of humans. Emperor Cole had one chance, and he wasted it..." Dialogue (telepathic?) from Praetorian Hami itself? Yikes...

And who's "Dual Pistol Man" (:45)? Is that Wu's nickname for Maelstrom, or were there going to be AWESOME new characters named Fire Manipulation Man, Nature Affinity Woman, Illusion Control Boy, etc.? Was Penny finally going to get her own superhero handle -- "Psi Melee Girl"?

Good luck with the job search, though I suspect you won't have to search too hard... and best wishes to you & Mrs. Dr. Aeon! You crazy kids!

P.S. The first two videos had me psyched for what might have been... but if the stuff in that third video represented some sort of "new direction" for the game, then I'm glad NCsoft shut you maniacs down! "Resurgence", my butt! I H8 U dEvz U wr3kced Pvp LOLOLOL!!!11!!1
  23. If your setup balks at Nature Affinity, it's simple... just get a new computer. Problem solved! You'll be supporting The Economy* and better able to appreciate Honey Badger's killer animations. A "win-win" as they say.

*Don't go too crazy, though; it's still doomed
  24. Oh well. I did my part...

    1) "Follow"ed CoH on Twitter
    2) Re-Tweeted post when it appeared
    3) Received Tweet to tell me I'd be getting my code as a Private Message thru Twitter
    4) Read Tweet saying codes would be going out soon
    5) Received code! Experienced tiny spark of hope and optimism
    6) Logged into game, went to Market... entered code exactly as given... aaaaand...

"The code you have entered is not valid"

So, I guess... yeah. Whatever. Don't know what to say.

And that's a big part of the reason people bummed out over the Super Packs when they were announced; one had to participate in gambling in order to obtain a costume set, with no guarantee that it would ever be made available anywhere else.
