Top 50 Disapointing movie sequels, adaptations or simply overhyped

The category being listed is broad enough that I can't disagree with any of the listings. While I was a little surprised by the inclusion of, say, Iron Man 2, I can certainly agree that it was overhyped. This list is a nice illustration of a point I like to make here in internet-land: calling something "overrated" (here, "overhyped") doesn't necessarily mean it's "bad" (though they sometimes go together).

Wait? What? No Scorpion King. Seriously, my son loved the Mummy movies and I paid money to see what I thought was going to be Indian Jones-ish....and got Conan....in all its glory.
About six years ago I had the pleasure of meeting the Rock on a USO tour in the Middle East...
"You know, the last movie I paid to see was the Scorpion King"
"That movie was a lot of fun, the physicality, the locations....whatd ya think?"

Very disappointed the list author didn't open it up even further by adding a few more qualifiers like "didn't get free popcorn", "failed to revive my love life" and "too many people checking Facebook on their phones in audience".

My City Was Gone
I'd not agree with the X Men Last Stand, I enjoyed that film far more than X Men 3
And I'd strongly disagree with the Matrix Revolutions as I love that trilogy , but I know I'm in a minority for that.

X-Men: The Last Stand was X-Men 3, the second movie was simply X2.

X-Men: The Last Stand WAS X-Men 3, wasn't it? Are you thinking of X-Men: First Class or possibly that Wolverine movie thing? (Aside to producers reading this: this is the sort of mess you create when you create a series and don't number consistently. Just because a "franchise" is an abstract bundle of concepts and IP rights to you doesn't mean your audience views it the same way.)

You're right, I'm thinking of First Class!
my bad, nothing to see here, move along, move along.

If you're going to throw Iron Man 2 on a disappointing movie list, you might as well throw The Avengers on there as well.
I actually really enjoyed Sucker Punch >> Dunno why it gets so much hate
There's a number of films on here actually I disagree with, like Pirates 3, Ghostbusters 2, Kill Bill 2. That's mostly it though, a lot of the list holds up very much as disappointing.
I liked it well enough, but the movie was quite a bit different from what the trailers were selling.
Three of the top four share the same problem. They were all made WAY too long after the previous movie. 16 years for Phantom Menace, 20 for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, 16 years for Godfather 3. With that much time gone by, there is simply no way that you could ever make a movie that would be good enough to live up to the hype and the build up after so long. I freely admit all of those movies were disappointing and failed to live up to the standards of their franchise. But, they pretty much had the odds stacked up against them. They not only had to live up to the actuality of how good their predecessors were, but also the myth and legend of how good the previous movies were. That they so blatantly failed to do either makes them that much more disappointing.

Iron Man 2? Really?
Personally, I don't think IJ4 was as bad as many others think. And not deserving of #1 spot at all.

Plus Phantom Menace's big sin was being a prequel. Such a nono. Prequels are -rarely- good.
To be fair to The Phantom Menace, the second coming of Christ to throw a giant bbq for all mankind and give everyone $20 couldn't have lived up to the kind of hype they put out for that movie.
The Phantom Menace made $100 million this year.
Obviously a lot of people weren't that disappointed.

Especially when Indy 4 followed Raiders on TV the other night, you can just see the lack of quality when watching them back-to-back like that. The only mitigating factor is that Temple of Doom was so terrible. In the Starlog interview with Lawrence Kasdan when Raiders came out, he talks about the rejected-for-silliness gags from Raiders... all of which are in Temple.

indie 4 just felt like it was spinning the wheels. Nearly every major plot point was a retread from a prior movie just with new names/faces. Instead of nazis it's communists, instead of God it's Aliens. The villains die for their greed and hubris.
It's like someone broke down Indie 3 into bullet points and just hanged names.
One that I thought they missed was The Last Airbender. However the whole race bending controversy about the cast may have turned the hype down enough that the poor acting and special effects wasn't as disappointing.
As for Iron Man 2, I think it was more because Iron Man was nearly flawless. Plus the first movie gave the comic fans their first hint of something greater, an honest to God team up with that after credits scene. It didn't help that the merged to classic Iron Man villains into one and made Hammer a bit too much a buffoon trying to be a Tony Stark wannabe and his malfunctioning weapons.

Why is Queen of the Damned not on that list? Absolutely TERRIBLE followup to Interview with a Vampire.
