Should have also limited it to live action TV shows. Otherwise you can also toss in Transformers and My Little Pony.

Mileage will vary with people about some of the entries on this list. However I doubt anyone will disagree with the #1 show on the list....
I am glad Pushing Daisies made the list. I love that show, and need to watch it again.

Better Off Ted should be much higher on the list. That show was hilarious. If you haven't seen it do so now. I think it's available on netflix streaming.

It is definitely available on Netflix streaming. They keep telling me to watch it.

I'm going to assume that the "list" isn't presented in a nice, consolidated list format, but rather as some multi-page and likely gallery-slideshow-esque irritation. And thus I won't bother clicking it.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was missing gems like Farscape and Brisco County Jr., either, given that by accounts in this thread it seems to be missing the likes of Babylon 5 (not a show I cared for, personally, but certainly worthy of being on such a list). Between that and the probable format, it's likely not a worthwhile list.

It has Farscape, but not Brisco County, Jr. as well as Babylon 5.

Some of the shows seemed fairly mainstream to me and thus not so much "cult." Like Supernatural and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

I was just going to mention Brisco County Jr.!

Also a show that in some way influenced other shows or pop-culture in some meaningful way. Viewership numbers at the time don't seem to enter into it.

I can see why all of these shows would fall under their definition of cult. I would put a couple of shows higher than they are, and perhaps swap out a show or two with things like Futurama, or V (the original series).

Doctor Who hasn't gone off the air. It's still being made.

I also don't think that there's a show on it that's been off the air over 25 years, or even 20.

For Tenzhi's benefit:

  1. Doctor Who
  2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  3. Arrested Development
  4. MST3K
  5. X-Files
  6. The Wire
  7. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
  8. Star Trek: The Next Generation
  9. The Comeback
  10. My So-Called Life
  11. Lost
  12. Firefly
  13. Twin Peaks
  14. Veronica Mars
  15. Battlestar Galactica (2004)
  16. Community
  17. Undeclared
  18. Fringe
  19. Wonder Showzen
  20. Supernatural
  21. Popular
  22. Party Down
  23. Farscape
  24. Better of Ted
  25. Archer
  26. Pushing Daisies

Twin Peaks, the oldest on that list, aired from 1989-1990, if I recall correctly. So, 22 years.

They also seem to have forgotten that Battlestar Galactica existed long, long before the new version, and "frak" (and feldergarb, etc) were already "in use" by geeks. Kind of strange that they'd simply... ignore that the new version is a poor imitation of the original, which IS I would say more cult today than the new one - which I'd easily consider mainstream.

I've never heard of any given 'social aspect' show (ie: they're actually just sitcoms with a bit of snide) so I'm unclear why they'd have 'cult' status either, they're generally more appealing to a broader audience.

Archer, however, there's a show that deserves to have its own cult

I thought Buffy would be number one....when I saw it was Doctor Who....I'm like: ok, that might be THE only show I can see taking number 1 in this....as it's been on 50 years straight.

I don't like Doctor Who....but ya know.

The new one wasn't a poor imitation. It was a different genre. The original Battlestar was a space opera in keeping with the popularity of Star Wars. The new one was a war drama following the popularity of more gritty science fiction which was big when it came out. And I really enjoyed the new series until the final episode. Any writer who uses a literal deus ex machina should be skinned alive, rolled in salt and then forced to watch every episode of Barney the Dinosaur and Teletubbies back to back.

And really, I'll repeat. If you have no clue why Better off Ted (a sitcom with a bit of snide) would be on that list then sit down and watch it.

Buuhhh... Dr. Who was around 1963-1989, then again 2005+. I know the list specifically mentions the modern series, but no real fan separates them into two.

Well I was saying that none on the list have been off the air more than 25 years, maybe 20. Smersh pointed out Twin Peaks at 22.

Otherwise ST: TOS would be there big time. The cult following created by that series allowed they various spinoffs to be churned out for 15 or so years and was the model for all TV cult following since then.

Cool, Farscape is up there - although that reminds me of my Gigi Edgley is so damn hot in pasty grey and white make-up fetish.

If the list was really trying to make an honest assessment of 'cultitude' they would have combined all the star trek shows and listed them as either #1 or #2. I think the star trek 'cult' as a whole easily surpasses the dr who cult but would accept the two cults in either order at the top of the list.

The full Doctor Who article in EW, which contained this list, also points out how Doctor Who references are popping up in other series with increased frequency as evidence to it's cult status. Everyone knows Trekers, Whovians are a bit more off of the public's radar and therefore references feel more like an inside joke between friends.

This..

I was under the impression that "cult" meant a small yet devoted fan base.. TNG = Cult? How? That show was/is quite popular among a wide array of people.

Though I will agree with its assessment on Fringe. As much as I liked the parallel universe story arc, it did detract from your ability to miss an episode or two and know what was going on.

I have a hard time calling anything that gets significant airtime on SpikeTV a 'cult' show, ie ST:TNG. SpikeTV's audience is about as uncult as you're going to find.
