You miss the point with impressive grace and poise.

I won't spoil the effect with an explanation.

It needed to be a bit more High-brow to go over my head. It spent too much time with the set-up for a very simple payoff and thus had poor timing overall.

But I thought the point was to start a pretend fight over things that don't matter!

If a=b, b=a.

Just because YOU think something isn't funny does not mean no one else does.

You'll excuse my disbelief.
Given the attached comic, I thought the implication was that the titular statement was one of those crazy notions that could be defeated with an argument that involved going down a waterslide. Basically, 'the title is a silly notion and while someone, somewhere is apparently patting themselves on the back for it, I'm having fun with Water Blast' seemed to me to be the message.

I understood the joke and didn't find it funny. That's my experience with xkcd in general, though they do have the occasional smirkworthy gem.

Usually I have to *pay* someone to follow me around repeating my points, so thanks.

Or we got the intent and it was not funny. It seems more like some 7 year old trying to get some attention. You have it, my furry little friend!

I haven't gone through XKCD's archives for the same reason I haven't cracked 200 Misfiles yet - there's a LOT to work through. And I can barely keep up with the OTHER 300 comics I'm subscribed too (I'd link my Webcomic list, but there's some NSFW stuff there). I find XKCD amusing as long as I got enough sleep to follow the train of thought.

Even after the explanation, I still don't get it. Is going down a waterslide supposed to represent disengaging from the conversation, after admitting that he spent hours citing sources? Who is supposed to be talking in the second pane anyway, the guy with hair or the bald one? And what does this have to do with Water Blast and/or bankruptcy?

the argument is futile, the one part of the discussion (bald guy) has simply realized that no logic or facts could persuade the second guy who was deep in conspiracy theory mode, so he just quit and did something fun instead...possibly voiding the warranty on his smartphone in the process. the second pane seems to be the other guy. poster 1 is the guy in the first pane, he has tried facts and reason, pane 2 is the second guy, who dismisses them as part of a grand conspiracy. both statements seem to be from the second "hair" guy, perhaps representing a dramatic pause

have to admit, this is how some threads by some posters are best approached on this forum, and i have, in the past, realized i should have gone down the waterslide earlier.

I think that was definitely part of it, but I read it more as using .NET pages with black backgrounds and 20 fonts each holds as much water (ooh, pun!) in winning an argument as going down a waterslide.

I know people like this. They latch onto a really bizarre, unfeasible, highly unlikely, and sometimes even repeatedly proven wrong explanation for something that supports their belief(s) although every known proven fact dictates otherwise. It's an argument that defies all logic or reason.

The guy with hair commenting, "So? What does that prove? You didn't win the argument!" is ironic humor in that this is the exact sentiment that most people have towards him, but he just doesn't realize it. The only way the bald guy can win the argument is by presenting an even less rational non sequitur than the one(s) that are being presented to him.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.

My personal take on it is that if you can't be friends with someone, treat them like a client instead.

Though I have to say nothing on these message boards reaches the depths of most news sites or Gorilla games. Ever since "Real Money Auction House the Game" crashed and burned, a certain Other Forum has reached levels of histrionics this game hasn't seen since ED.

maybe, ill admit to being a mid level techie at best, so i felt the .net thing was kind of a self contained joke. bald brought verifiable sources, hair had fringe sites. but i freely admit that joke may have gone over my head. In real life i did once argue with a conspiracy theorist, a co-worker who i had previously been friends with. and i can sympathize, you cant show them the logical flaws in their arguments because verifiable information is all propaganda. its a fairly hard to crack shell because it literally disavows the existence of verifiable fact. best to just consider them a lost cause and move on to another topic that you can enjoy more than slamming your head against a brick wall.

dunno, I dont give people the "client" treatment unless they are paying me.(unsure if that makes me sound like a prostitute ) otherwise its either you are worth time or you arent. neither case should lead to frustration on my part, so if i'm getting frustrated, its my own stupid fault for not realizing a lost cause and moving on. especially on a forum about a game I ostensibly enjoy. if forums are frustrating, its a better idea to just play the game.
