Too commercialized

I have been with COH for a long time and I am becoming more and more frustrated at the commercialization of COH. Now, only the wealthy and insanely rich can enjoy the game fully. If you are on a limited income you can only use basics and not look as nice or fight with as much style as a rich person. IT sucks and is about to drive me from the game. I am sure most of you do not care but I had to say my piece.

Sorry you feel this way.. I'm not exactly "rich" either but enjoy the just $15 a month sub with an occasional treat here n there with points. But I'm not what people call an "altaholic" and making 40 toons and trying to deck each one out with stuff bought from the market. I enjoy my 4 main toons for doing task forces n stuff with friends and with my villain group. You don't nessicarily have to have a sub just to talk to friends If you have the capability to at least send tells n stuff.

Im wealthy and rich beyond the means of all the little people out there playing the game, but Ill still take your stuff when you bounce.

Lol. Really? Tell me, can you only enjoy driving if you are in a Ferrari? Flying if in a private jet? Sleeping if in a mansion? Food if prepared by a three star Michelin chef? My heart bleeds for you.

LoL...I like it.

Im gonna need to see the rich guy's W-2 to confirm though or it didnt happen.
Or pics will do...you on a triple decker yacht with a well pleated chef's hat serving up 10 supermodels with strawberry crepes or sitting on his gold toilet with a $100 bills tp dispenser in the above mentioned well pleated chef's hat.

Basically doing anything balla with a chef's hat, Ill accept it.

What was this thread about again...chef's hat costume option?

Well maybe if you were more than a halfthief you would have more money. Maybe it's time to step up to fullthievery.

P.S. If you can afford a sub, you can afford (assuming infinite inf since this is a real money conversation) all the nice stuff. If you can't afford a sub, well, before F2P you wouldn't have been able to play. At all. No, not even with SOs. No, not even with a generic white costume. The best you could do is load up the game and gaze longingly at the login screen, and maybe if you were feeling really crazy you would type in your login and password and click Login, just to get a message telling you that you're too poor to play the game at all. With the rush of excitement gone from that brief hope that your account had re-enabled itself by mistake, you close the game screen and go outside to enjoy a warm beautiful day, or maybe cuddle up with a loved one underneath the covers on a frigid winter evening. Or maybe you would finally start that novel you always wanted to write. The point was, you had options. But now, you have no options. Now you are forced to play a game for free (I don't wish to be crude but I nearly threw up just typing that) because you can't afford to pay for it. There is no summer, there is no winter, there are no loved ones and no Great American Novels. There is only you with your free costume pieces and Single Origin enhancements and lack of Incarnate powers.

Can I have your stuff?

Insanely rich?

Do you mean REAL money? Or in-game inf?

If the latter, hey, the fact that I'm in the upper tenth (or maybe even hundreth) of a percent of Inf-rich guys in the game helps. But full enjoyment of the game is a completely subjective call.

If the former? If you're talking about the premium/VIP dichotomy, maybe a little. If you're talking about the Free Players/VIP dichotomy? Yeah. I'll agree.

So the FNORD what? Paying $10-15 a month for a sub doesn't make one "rich". And some of these guys have been doing it for YEARS. Through periods of unemployment, etc. Sorry, but for the cash they've contributed (and are still contributing) to the game, they deserve a different play experience than the free player.

If you're griping about the cash shop.
Sure, some of the stuff in there makes life NICER. But IN NO WAY detracts from the enjoyment of the game if you decide not to buy the stuff. Most of the REALLY useful stuff has an analog you can earn/buy in-game for Inf/Merits/etc. What's more, some of the STUPIDLY useful stuff is TEAM ORIENTED! So you're gaining some tangental benefit from a teammate who bought it even if you didn't.

Would it be nice if every player had tons of real-world money and could dump hundreds or thousands of dollars into the game on a weekly/monthly basis?

Yeah!

But we're living in a nasty little place I like to call "reality". The job market sucks (think 50-megawatt Hoover Vacuum), the economy isn't even in the toilet, it got flushed into the sewers long ago, and the difference between "haves" and "have nots" is slowly becoming the difference between the "haves" and "never will haves".

Mainly because most of all these mutually antagonistic governments on the planet are concerned with one thing. Keeping themselves employed so they can bilk their citizens of even MORE while keeping them in fear that if they aren't good little kiddies, Uncle is going to come down on them like a bag of high-explosive sledgehammers.

And best of all, there's no clear-cut way to actually fix the problem.

Ain't life grand?

In short.

There's bigger problems going on than the fact that Little Johnny can't spend thousands of Paragon Points a day. Ergo, some perspective is required here.

While it is obvious that such a thread would bring on derision, hehe, I don't think the OP's position/opinion should be mocked (not saying anyone should follow my opinion on this... do what ya do!).

I knew that this business model would bring on such feelings for some people. It's pretty much unavoidable, whether or not the feelings are based on anything factual.

The only aspects that *I* can see that this might be true for are for the ultra rare finds in the Super Packs: Black Wolf and Corsair (uh...) Flying Disc Thingy...

Now, it's not true that anyone needs to be insanely rich to afford those things (and some could even get super lucky, of course), but... from a fiscally limited and/or fiscally responsible and/or pragmatic perspective, chasing after such rewards by dumping the cash in may require a boat load of funds before one would even consider it a viable option.

What do we have that'd cause problems of the OP's sort? Enhancement Slot additions? Other storage improvements? Super Pack goodies? Buying the Store IOs??
If you're subscribed, the points can add up... especially if you stayed subscribed for the period before Freedom launched (those bonus points really helped).

If you're not Tier 9 VIP, then the Tier 9 rewards could be seen as another major expense.

In the end, all of these things can come down to patience. Depending on how far away you are from a veteran status or how many things you want beyond your 400 points/month... All things are attainable without spending anything further.

Still... if those things from the Super Packs (even if you just want the costumes... it's not guaranteed that $15 will get you what seems to be of a $5 value) and/or the costumes from Tier 9 VIP are currently out of your reach and the things that you wish you could play with right now... I can understand how you might feel this way and I cannot entirely disagree with your disappointment.

It'd be nice if everything was offered up within the same price ranges and reach for the user.
Want this awesome costume set? Spend this normal amount of money and/or this normal amount of points and you have it right now.

Instead, there are absolutely gaps between players these days. The gaps contain fancier and flashier rewards under the Freedom business model.

All that being said... It's not quite all that bad.

I can't see that in the same way I can't see that in order for someone to have a fulfilling life experience, one Must play the lottery. Sorry, but that sort of chase will never be fulfilling as they will always be chasing the next thing that they imagine will fill the hole of despair. I know, there are many people out there like that, and I pity them but when they start complaining about it, they should be reminded that the issue is in them, not everyone.

Well said, Gob. While I sympathize with anyone who has had to cut back on their entertainment budget while the economy is in the toilet, Limited access is better than none at all. I'll declare that as a fact, and stand proudly behind it.

BTW, I'm unable to play at all atm while I recover from a broken arm. I read the forums and stare longingly at people's F2P accounts.

No, you cannot has my stuff while I recover, even if you promise to give it all back.

I used to be like you halfthief, just another prole, but then I won the lottery, and suddenly I was a job creator! As a job creator I am free to enjoy the game fully and in the height of fashion. No more time wasted as a lowly "soon-to-have", I'm now one of the fortunate "haves"! But don't you dare call me rich, that would be against Newspeak etiquette, call me a job creator or I'll have you arrested for thoughtcrime.

Personally, I think that with the wide number of free costume options, "looking nice" comes down more to how good you are at making things look good. But by all means blame your lack of money for how crappy your guys look. It's easier than dealing with the real source.

I had the awesome priviledge of playing with a really rich player with a build chock full of expensive and rare set IOs. He was on my Apex team. Unfortunately, even with his super-duper build, he faceplanted many times while we fought Battle Maiden. Sadly, money doesn't buy everything.

In no way am I rich - cept in my choice of friends and the good luck I have with family members - I'm a pensioner trying hard to live within my hubby's means. But for the last 8 years I've found the werewithal to sub CoH. Now it is FtP if there comes a time we can't afford the subs I can still happily play the game with what I have paid for up until now. Rich? No! Happy? Yes!

I am on a very limited income, but find that $15.00 a month to play is a fair investment for the hours of fun it provides me. This is less than it costs to go to a first run movie these days.

I was about to repeat myself, oh my! Just get over it honey. I'd like to stay at a Scottsdale resort and dine with the rich and famous, but I will settle for home and my take out Chic Fil A sandwich.

Pfffffft to that nonsense.

I am neither wealthy nor insanely rich & yet had a terrific time playing as a Freemium leech for a couple of months before subbing back up. The only major change for me was getting back all of my character slots.

Again, PFFFFFFFFFFFFT.

You can make amazing, cool, enviable costumes with nothing but the stuff the game shipped with 8 years ago, let alone access to all of the treasures of CoV and the various other additons to the 'free' costume editor over the years.

Gratz on your overwhelming sense of entitlement!
I'm sure it will serve you well on the next game you play, where you will also expect to get everything for free and be inevitably disappointed.
