Pando Media Booster

Just out of curiosity does anyone know if Paragon Studios or NCSoft use something called Pando Media Booster? Was downloading a patch for the test server and half way through got a prompt to install something called Pando Media Booster. The NCSoft launcher was the only thing running at the time.

I updated Test after reading your post and got no prompts to install Pando Media Booster.

I've checked and it's not installed on my computer so I know it didn't do a stealth install.

It sounds like something else was running (possibly a program in the system tray or something in the background) that did the install.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Pretty sure the NCSoft Launcher does in fact use Pando, so you ought to have it hanging out somewhere. Under Win7, it's installed under C:\Program Files\Pando Networks ("Program Files (x86)" if you're on 64-bit Win7).

Pando is used on a per-game basis for the NCsoft Launcher. City of Heroes does not use Pando, and you do not need to have it installed to log into any of the City of Heroes game servers.

It doesn't use it if you only have CoH installed, and Black Pebble has confirmed that CoH doesn't use it. I know Aion users were reporting it was used since I saw reports of it in the Tech forums. I don't know about any of the other NCSoft games since I don't play them and haven't seen reports about them.

However, I know where to look on my computer for programs (I'd be a pretty lousy computer tech if I didn't) and I already reported that it isn't installed.

Some think that Pando is EBIL and stating that this game is using it may upset those who do needlessly, that's all.

Best thing I did was uninstall Pando media booster. For some reason it was affecting my mouse causing lag. Whenever it stealth installed while testing new games the mouse problem returned. Uninstalling always removed the mouse lag.

Just a heads up if you get mouse trouble and have Pando installed.

We had a thread started by someone trying to claim NCSoft was pushing Pando in their games in the Tech forums a while back. It was shown then that the claim had no merits as it related to CoH. Also, it was pointed out that an Aion Facebook page update made it clear that the NCLauncher was no longer going to prompt people to install Pando Media Booster in order to play Aion: Ascencion and that that game could be updated completely through the NCLauncher.

My post here made it pretty clear that Pando wasn't being installed by updating the Test client.

It has issues with runaway memory use and also runaway bandwidth use if you don't go digging.

Guild Wars doesn't use it and as stated by others, neither does City of Heroes. Do you happen to have Aion installed? I've heard people say that game uses it. If not, then it must be some other online game you have installed on your computer.

Hmm.........tried doing Google searches to find a list of NC Soft games, or any list of games at all that use Pando Media Booster. I got nothing at all that came up. However, I came across an article from Massively dated April 17, 2012 that said Aion is no longer using Pando but it was edited later that they got a response from NC Soft that the removal of Pando for Aion was only temporary. http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04...ster-the-boot/

Seems the biggest complaint is that Pando hogs system resources and continues to run even when the compatible game is not downloading any updates.

Edit: The Pando website doesn't seem to have a list of games that use their software. It would be nice if people could find such a list so they can avoid games that use it if that is their desire.

As someone else pointed out, Cryptic does use Pando (at least for Star Trek Online, Google search seems to indicate also for Champions), so I wouldn't be surprised if more than a few of us have it installed because of either of those games (I have Star Trek Online installed, hence my earlier confusion).

The fact is the Pando Media Booster implementation in the NCsoft Launcher is difficult to understand. There is no clear explanation why it's required, what it does, and what games use it. There are certain games that use it to help with the installation and patching experience. City of Heroes is not one of them.

Even though it's been an optional component of the NCsoft Launcher for months now, it's still a source of confusion. I can see why this question keeps coming up, as it would concern me as well.

I can look into seeing what we can do with the NCsoft Launcher to be more explicit about Pando, but I can't promise anything. The NCsoft Launcher is a shared resource, and changes are never just that simple.

In the meanwhile, let's not let poor messaging for a feature that we don't use lead to more issues.

Just to set the record straight, the NC Soft launcher itself doesn't install or ask you to install Pando. The only online games I have on my computer are Guild Wars and City of Heroes. I just did a search on my computer and found that I do not have Pando Media Booster anywhere. In fact, I've never had any other MMOs aside from those 2 installed on this system. So if you are playing CoH and get some pop up about it, it would be because Aion uses it, and possibly Lineage II, that is if you have either of those games installed or have had them installed. If you have neither of those games then it must be another you have installed or installed at one time. Neither Guild Wars or CoH (confirmed by red name) uses Pando.

Doing a Google search, it seems some games that might use it would be: League of Legends, Star Trek online, Lord of the Rings online, Aion, Lineage II, Dungeons & Dragons online, Perfect World International, etc. Most of the Google results are discussions on official forums for these games and/or a FAQ page about it.

Hmm....I did find something interesting. http://boards.lineage2.com/showthread.php?t=241273
In regards to Lineage II. (dated recent, June 18, 2012) It shows a screen shot from the NC Soft launcher. I don't have Lineage II so I can't confirm that. But......the screen shot shown would be clicking the little arrow on the Lineage II bar and selecting Properties, that is if you have it installed.

Pando Media Booster is a Bittorrent client. What that means is, when your computer downloads a patch, the portion you've downloaded is reported to a central control server. Those pieces are made available to other players of the same game, served from your computer.

That saves the developer money (they don't need as robust patch servers or bandwidth) , and allows players to download patches faster.

It also uses some of your bandwidth, and some of your computer's power and memory. That might not sit well with a lot of players, which is why many developers try to keep Pando secret. A lot of them figure the benefits to both themselves, and players, is worth the potential negatives, and its best if those who don't really understand its purpose don't know about it.

Is this a hidden program? I can't find it when I go to Control Panel Programs.

I have STO and CO installed. So if not through the control panel how does one figure out if Pando is installed?

^^^This. There was a huge out cry with the 3.0 update forcing this on you. You can uninstall it but when you update it reinstalls itself back again. Basically its kind of like a bit-torrent thing where it helps you update faster. Considering both games that use this Technology are near death, bandwidth for new installs should be the least of their worries.

Like I said, it's under Program Files.

I've had Liniage installed. I have STO and CO currently installed (and up to date).

So either I'm missing it somehow, avoided it somehow, or it isn't associated with those programs.
