edit: Here's the article

Quote:
Nexon Co., a Tokyo-based maker of online games, bought a 804.5 billion won ($685 million) stake in NCSoft Corp. to become the South Korean company's biggest shareholder.

Nexon purchased 3.2 million NCSoft shares, a 14.7 percent stake, from NCSoft Chairman Kim Taek-Jin for 250,000 won apiece, it said in a statement today. That's 6.7 percent less than today's closing price in Seoul for NCSoft, which offers online games including Lineage and Aion.

Nexon sees "a lot of opportunities" for acquisitions in Asia, North America, and Europe, Chief Financial Officer Owen Mahoney said last month. The Tokyo-based company is interested in investing in companies that develop games for Facebook Inc. and mobile-phone users, he said at the time.

NCSoft, based in Seoul, rose 0.4 percent to 268,000 won in trading on the city's stock exchange today before the announcement. Nexon fell 0.2 percent to 1,319 yen on the Tokyo stock exchange today.

Nexon bought up a bunch of NCSoft stock, they're now the single largest shareholder at 19%.

Man, I wish. I'd love to have some other modern urban mission areas besides Paragon and the Isles.

you know, I was kind of hoping in the back of my head the same thing. Don't think it will happen though. Guess it cant hurt to hope though :P Maybe the independance port remake will add a littel tokyo/hong kong area, would kind of make sense since it would be a place new arrivals would have likely lived first, and likely immigrants would live together in an area where their language and specific foods and cultural needs would be concentrated. lord knows i have been nagging for one long enough.

that said, when the american company of our competitors online was sold from a French company to a Chinese one, there was no new content added to reflect the change, and i doubt we will see any in the shift in stock leverage to another Korean company with its new hq in tokyo. I'm just really adding more nudging for more eastern content in the game.

This kind of makes my skin crawl a little because Nexon games (MapleStory, Mabinogi, etc) tend to be typical Asian-style grindfests. I sincerely hope they don't try to press City into such a beast. The beauty in City is that you don't HAVE to grind to get where you want to go (it's faster to, obviously, yes; Nexon's games pretty much require grinding).

I'll hope that I'll get some Tokusatsu style costume peices, but this is most likely no differen than the Disney acquisition of Marvel, at best it brings more funding, at worst it changes nothing.

I am both intrigued and apprehensive at this news.

At least here, if that happens? Yeah, player-base revolt. Surely no one would mess up a status quo that has worked for eight years and still going strong.

Nexon, as in the company infamous for pay2win "free" online games that charge you out the nose for anything and everything, and if it really had merged with EA would become the most powerful supervillain in the cosmos? Oh boy.

I don't think that this will affect CoH in any way. If anything, they are trying to cash in on the Asian games before NCKorea releases "Blade and Soul."

Since Aion is still a huge money maker in Korea, I'd say NCKorea is looking to pass off Aion and some of their other games to Nexon so they can focus time and money on Blade and Soul.

pohsyb: so of all people you must be most excited about the veats

They only have 14.7% and are the largest minority shareholder. NCsoft itself still owns the majority.

Hey, maybe Sparkblade (though understandable why) and Rose Star (much less understandable since she has no apparent unique Powers) can get some 'screen time'.

Quoting this again because it needs to be quoted. Also, because I like Paragon's avatar. Laura+Jubes 4eva!

So yeah, the sky ain't falling and Nexon AREN'T our new Japanese overlords; NCSoft remain our South Korean overlords.

Forgive the ignorance, what does all this mean for the game? If they want a piece of the pie and decides to leave the game alone? Meh. But if they have plans or ideas there should be some sort of announcement about any changes that will change everything.

most likely, almost nothing at all, if not absolutely nothing.

I don't care who buys NCsoft.

I care about who buys Paragon Studios.

Which I hope one day will be me, once my plan to win the lottery actually comes to fruition.
