Add npc dialog/underwater fighting
NPCs do.
As for underwater stuff, dunno if that is likely to work. A lot of work for few content.
Do you mean having NPCs actually have audible dialog? Like when you click on them they audibly say "Hello There!" or "Wazzzup?"?
Something like Hi super hero! Omg i like your tights! Well here is what i have for you today crime fighter! But yes a voice over to maybe entice us to want to read that wall of text. Underwater fighting could be a new sewer trial or something for low to mid range levels except your in the water. Maybe fighting a new npc sea group called the forgotten fish. Goldfish that mutated from being flushed down the toilet.
BaB shot down underwater without a trace of doubt. Now that he's not working with Paragon though, who knows? I think it at least says there are no current plans for it.
Goodbye. Not to the game, but the players. Goodbye. Everyone, remember to have fun. That's all I can say.

I'm going to kill everyone's pony and say that as long as I am on this project, it will never happen. They will have to replace me with a gibbering idiot to get the okay to move forward with animation and VFX needed to support 'underwater' zones.
And then it will take years and ultimately look stupid. P.S. Aquaman is lame! |
I kinda wish they would go through and at least add some vocals to at least some of the cutscenes, especially the newer ones for iTrials, SSAs. Understandable that it may be tough to get them in all of them in the game, but if they were going to add vocals, that would be my choice as far as where to start.

I always supported the idea of underwater fighting. But the issue is that it'll be really hard to do.
First you have to make an AoE based auto-power that acts like flight while in water, except with a different animation. Then you have to tweak various animations that are already in game from their flight stance to their underwater stance (at least those that don't fit already). Then you have to come up with an explanation as to why it is your toons can hold their breath for hours.
Though if they're willing to do all this I won't stop them.

How is Oilslick Arrow supposed to knock opponents down?
How are any fire powers going to burn underwater without looking stupid?
How are birds (Beast Mastery attacks) supposed to fly underwater?
The list goes on.
Underwater doesn't need shooting down when it's been dead and buried for so long, with good reason. I guess I can't take my archer or fire characters down there, hmm? Dern, skippeh!
As for vocals? Dear god, no. Given the standard of vocal artists these days apparently, you'd need the budget of Bethesda/Skyrim to pull off something that didn't totally suck. And even then they had repeats and none of them could put on other accents worth a damn.
Example? The new tutorial voice overs. Dear. God. Tearing my ears off with 'argh'.
The one good bit of vocalisation is Recluse's screen monologue in Grandville. I still like his voice a bit better in the old cinematic trailers, though.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

That said, if a lot of people wanted voiceovers, then sure, so long as there's an off switch in the options.

Death is part of my attack chain.
I think that underwater fighting and movement could be "faked" with a permanent zone-wide version of Group Fly - only with a trail of bubbles instead of the usual air trail effects of flying, and the use of the current swimming animation as the default fly pose.
This would mean that no new animations would be needed, and the ability to select the normal fly psoes would also let people move through the water in a non-swimming way if they wanted to - like if they were a robot or other non-human thing.
A second underwater option is for something like an underwater city or base, which would have us under the sea, but not actually in the water - we'd be indoors, but be able to see the sea through the windows - like the way we can see the rest of the zone when we're inside an AE building.

This. Makes. No. Sense. None of those powers would (or should, rather) work properly underwater. It's really that simple.

Not to mention the problems with Fire powers, Bows and Guns, Electrical powers, Shurikens, etc.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
Yeah, and how many powers in the game require you or the target to be standing on the ground to work? They just won't work if swimming is involved.

As for the rest of the underwater zone the devs could use it as an opportunity to design and implement some non combat mini games.
exploration badges
hidden/secret rooms
puzzles with a variety of solutions and an RNG so players don't always get the same one over and over.
Actually they could easily allow travelling underwater "BUT" not place any NPC's in the areas that allow underwater swimming. When a player gets to where he's going he enters an airlock that takes him to an area where he can use his powers.

You enter a cave entrance. . . Then proceed a few steps to the same kind of pool in the Cim. caves where you can swim underwater.
You then swim down a long corridor in the cave, and pop up in the Arachnos sub base.
It would be a good way to pilot how well the game works. Again this is just something that could be thrown together and given a try.

Not necessarily. I don't think it would be that difficult to do underwater content overall. For instance, in one of the Shining Stars missions where you go into Manticores house and tunnels, toward the end there is a typical cave with crosswalk and water.. the interesting part is you can jump in and go beneath the water, even walk under the bridge. The water physics are still present near the edges but other then that, you can go right in. All they would need is to make a map with a deep enough water space, use a haze screen effect much like they do in Night Ward or the screen aura when you get close to the sonic fields.. and add a temp power "swim" which would be a form of flying while inside water.. I would love to see maps like this.. possibly involving more Lovecraftian storylines and the Coralax on heroside even. |
That would be an awesome idea Straenge. Infact, the idea of being able to do such things would truely enhance the game for the better. The swim temp power might make sense for an aquatic hybridization (IE: Click it and you become a cross between a shark and whatever your toon looks like). As for the Lovecraftian one, perhaps the arc would be something like it turns out that H.P. Lovecraft's books were about real entities and you must keep them from destroying Paragon City (Or the Rogue Isles, depending on your side). I find the concepts you are talking about an intriguing possibilities...provided the Devs are willling.

1. Ignore the fact a "swimming" temp power will gimp many characters into unplayability because their powers won't work unless they or their targets are standing on the ground
2. Ignore the fact that many powers would look flat out stupid in underwater combat.
But we should also hope the devs will risk getting sued again for copyright/trademark infringement by adding Lovecraftian content.
Sorry gonna have to emphatically /unsign this.
Make npc contacts talk or say brief phrases. Also i would love to see some underwater content/action added to the game.
