Speaking of Avengers....

....so I'd seen comments about how good it was from friends in Australia, the Philippines, Korea and, of course, the United States, so a couple of weeks back I decided to walk to the local theater which I had recently had pointed out to me expecting to catch the Avengers.

Which is how I learned that Japan isn't running it until August.

At least I'll be on vacation then.

I won't spoil it by telling you that Hulk is Captain America's father!!
No no, Hulk isn't his father...

Black Widow is his father. There was a time machine, alternate dimensions, some really cheap whiskey, a pinata, a little person lucha libre professional, thousand island dressing, and for some reason, a set of cymbals.

Still trying to figure out the bit with the cymbals, but dang if Whedon didn't make that work.

That wasn't half as surprising as finding out that Mjolnir was Nick Fury's childhood sled.

What was funny was watching Fury switch his eyepatch back and forth every scene. No one was calling him on it, but every time he did it, the rest of the Avengers were giving each other the, "Is he crazy?" look. The SHIELD people just gave long-suffering sighs.

I do think giving Black Widow and Mariah Hill that poledancing scene was just a bit over the top. Not to say it wasn't...nummy...but still. Seemed a bit out of place and not that professional for them to be doing that in the middle of the SHIELD command center. Though I must say that Thor and Stark busting out the popcorn was a nice touch.

My personal favourite was the scene in which Loki performs an entire routine from Riverdance using illusion clones of himself.

Make sure you stay after the credits, there's a hidden scene with a Deadpool cameo (played by Tom Cruise!) where Loki reveals that he's his father.

So we find out that Tony Stark's parents are dead and that he's retreated to a small cave, painted his armor black and put little pointed ears on it. He's not very happy and speaks with a gravelly voice.

Captain America discovers that the Super Soldier Serum was actually extracted from an alien who crash landed in Kansas, who died shortly thereafter, and has discovered that he can fly, shoot lasers out of his eyes and is nearly indistrucable.

Thor's hammer is destroyed and he replaces it this a magical ring that lets him form anything he can imagine with his thoughts. He mostly uses it to hit things.

The Hulk undergoes a secondary mutation, instead of getting stronger when angry, he gets faster, to the point where he can run around the world in 10 minutes.

Black Widow gets a magic lasso that forces people to tell the truth and an invisible jet.

Hawkeye starts dressing in green with a hood and sports a ridiculous beard.

Everyone knows that Joss Whedon loads his films with lots of cymbalism even if none of it makes any sense.

i still like that scene where Loki does a brief Bananaphone riff before the segue into riverdancing. (She's even holding the same Reaver weapons as she did in Serenity during the dance.)

Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...

I wonder if the weeks of news about Avengers making ungodly amounts of money has peaked Japanese interest in this movie.

And that at the end, Nick Fury rips off his S. Jackson mask and we find out he's actually Carrot Top.

C'mon guys, at least don't spoil the part where the shield helicarrier is a floating turtle!

Goodbye. Not to the game, but the players. Goodbye. Everyone, remember to have fun. That's all I can say.

The reason that it won't be in theaters in Japan until August is to allow the maximum amount of time to sell the black market dvds. Then once everybody owns their $5 blu-ray and has seen it multiple times they can experience the thrill on the big screen.

It's so they can translate all of Stark's snarks into something culturally relateable and lip syncable.

That and finding a VA that can make the line "Chibi Kama" sound right coming out of Hulk's mouth.

Well, this weekend they weren't #1. But the fall-off from last weekend wasn't even 50%. That's actually fricking incredible for a movie in its fourth week of US distribution.

Yep, the Avengers finally got toppled by Men in Black 3. But it took almost a month to get the almost-invincible Avengers off their record-breaking throne. Mighty incredible, if you ask me.

I think it's safe to say that people dig the Avengers.

(I've seen it twice already, might have to see it one more time before it leaves theaters.)

And I bet next week it will be on top again. Avengers is getting huge repeat business and continuing word-of-mouth drawing out folks who don't ordinarily see 'superhero movies.'

At Rotten Tomatoes, Avengers is at 93% and MiB3 is at 63%. I doubt MiB will get repeaters or lots of word-of-mouth business.
