DC plans to out a prominent character
Publicity doesn't necessarily mean "spend money on this," it just means "talk about this." And from that view, they've succeeded.

Unless there is something showing how wildly popular and profitable comics with gay characters are these days, I still dont understand how making a character gay is considered a publicity stunt.

I agree and understand what youre saying b/c we are all definitely talking about it. In terms of products though, publicity stunts are usually marketing tools to generate sales.

Believe me, this will not make the gay populatione decide to start reading DC...and most certainly Gay comic fans would know by now if they like DC or not. The only money the might make will be from everyone buying the first issue and that's it.
I know of a lot of gay/bi comic book readers as well as gaymers and nerds...heck I know a lot of Bears who read comics and that's a sub group lol...no pun intended.

O_D - "If it gets DC free air time free print time talking about there product and if it gets attention away from a rivals product - the marriage of Northstar. I smell a publicity stunt."
I dont really see many people talking about a product versus discussing the value of sexual preference in comics as a whole.
Other than this one liner...are there people actually discussing Northstar and that hes getting married? I follow comics intermittently and this is the first time Ive commented on it.
Im assuming it comes down to why you read comics and what factors tie into that. I used to read Spawn because it was a great comic to me...not b/c the guy was black and a former Marine and b/c I can associate with those things. Im a big fan of boobies in real life, but just b/c Power Girl has been voted by some as being in the top 100 sexiest females, it doesnt influence me to buy that material.
Maybe some people buy comics for some of the reasons above and with that, I can see why Scott being gay is such a big deal.
I just read em for the solid stories and interesting concepts.
Race/sex/gender...all prety boring stuff in real life, let alone as a factor in comic books.

Goodbye may seem forever
Farewell is like the end
But in my heart's the memory
And there you'll always be

the big deal about scott being gay now is that he already had a son who was gay, as well as an established history with a couple ladies. but DC's reboot re-wrote so many other characters so we should all just deal with it since the writers dont care and make dumb decisions anyway.
this is a pub-stunt to keep up with marvel. DC's reboot really took several steps backward, again see: Apollo + Midnighter. Obsidian is also now - nonexistant. :/ this is no new-angle, but they knew it will generate discussion and therefore get the name out and sell some comics for folks who are curious about the new GL, and probably hadnt been into comics before but might start.
bleh
Good point and maybe Im just the odd man out here.
I like Wolverine and if he was suddenly 'gayed', Id still buy the title. Im not a fan of Superman and if he was suddenly gayed...I still wouldnt buy the title. I suppose there are a lot of people out there that have excess money to spend on comics and will buy this just because of the new sexual preference angle. In that case, I guess this is considered a publicity stunt. |
I don't know of anyone but the media talking about Northstars marrige either. But the idea of publicity is getting the media to talk about something theerby getting the public to talk about it. Btw i am a big fan of boobs also but not intrested in a Power Girl book.
Good thoughts from everyone and C'est la vie.
Im overseas and its not easy to get my hands on comics at the moment.
I just hope that this new 52 deal has some actual creativity and solid storylines behind it at the end of the day versus "hey look, this guy is gay now and these guys dont exist anymore...those idiots will love this stuff!"
Take care guys.

Has anyone who commented on this news item actually read the two earth2 comics? I have and I have enjoyed the story so far.
If I hadn't know comics beforehand or any of the previous history of this particular Green lantern, i would not have cared if he is gay or not. And just by reading a well written story Earth2 (in my very humble opinion) and some great art I actually do not care whether he's gay or not. So I base my opinion on the story i just read. (Just for your information: I had read issue one already before knowing Alan scott (or is it Scot Alan? me and names ) was being reintroduced as a gay character, and I must say they did a good job with this reintroduction.
Futhermore is it a nichemarket? I am gay and I know a number of gay friends who also enjoy comics. I don't read comics because there are gay characters in it, but if gay charcters are introduced in a good and believable manner I have no problem with it either.
The new 52 is supposed also to draw in a new crowd of readers, maybe this will help. More comicbookreaders is good for the industry in general, wheter they are gay or not! ;-)
