Couldn't you have just said "Free XP booster"?

Do we at least get a choice of female soldiers? Not that I'm complaining, I'm sure I could find a use for a bunch of well armed men and a giant hollow horse.

Well, I didn't regard the XP Booster with 'suspicious cynicism' and when I used it my character exploded into a million pieces and blew up the server.

And slapped me in the face!

if you say 'free xp booster' people know what they're getting and some of them won't want it, whereas if you say "free random thing from market" pretty much *everyone* will log in to see what it is.

I regarded it with all due suspicious cynicism and noted the bomb nestled in its virtual bosom. It seems safe now that it's been disarmed, but I'm keeping it 10 feet from my other power icons, behind the bomb shield and chorus girls. Just in case.

I just love watching the Olympic grade mental gymnastics some people go thru to justify complaining about being offered stuff for free.

Does that make the naivete necessary to accept everything at face value mental sloth?

I would say it's wiser to review how it's being applied on a case by case basis.

In review of this case we have a thread that's a complaint not really about the free item itself, but rather the build up to it and manner of distribution. The response to which has been some rather incorrect (and occasionally half-joking) assertions that free is always good, along with some folks pointing out that free isn't always good (in a likewise half-joking fashion). It doesn't look like a whole lot of real mental gymnastics or genuine naivete is involved.

My comment was intended to include all posts I've read on the forums rather than single anyone in particular out, but if I had to choose one as an example of what I meant it would be this one.

It was a slap in the face to me as a 7 year VIP customer that has dumped alot of money into the game to get a free item I have no use for.
I hope the guy is half-joking, cuz if he isn't I find his opinion to be even more hilarious.

I must admit I'd understood (probably incorrectly) that the item you obtained would be random per individual - in other words everyone gets something different.

It seems that doing it this way is potentially easier, but perhaps a bit limited in what can be offered?

I don't know. It's a nice to have and the XP booster is useful

Gift Horse.

Not Gift Horse STATUE.

I never got the whole "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" thing. I understand what it means... don't examine the teeth of a horse you receive for free to determine it's age, since that can be insulting to the person who gave you the free horse. Or in other words don't worry too much about assessing the worth of a gift, since a free gift is a free gift and should be valued either way. But... really, if you want to use the horse for anything, you DO need to know certain things about it. Examining the horse's teeth to determine it's age (since apparently the person who gave it to you is too much of a jerk to just TELL you) could be very important if you want the horse to race, or breed it, or whatever.

I mean, free is nice and all. But if you want to use that horse for anything, the smart thing to do is open that mouth up and take a good hard look. You'd be a fool not to!

I would also look into a horse's mouth. How else can I brush its teeth?

You mean elementary school level because that is all it is at this point.

The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.

Essentially it's "don't do it publicly". Because it's rude and uncouth.
If you want to PRIVATELY look and gripe, fine.

What's happening here is FAR from private.

Don't be confused by the thread title. It's a poorly disguised complaint about getting a free XP booster. The inferred comment is that if he'd known it was just an XP booster, he wouldn't have bothered looking for the free item.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

At the pummit, they said they would be startin g this, that they'd put a item ont he market for a day that would be free.

We got, what, 2 days notice? Yeah, it's a kind of hype-y PR piece, but I don't see the build-up.

Nope. Dominique Moceanu won Olympic gold in gymnastics at age 13, so I think the mental gymnastics we've seen are well within the range of being Olympic grade.

Well Zwill did say in his announcement that this was a test of a pilot program. It makes perfect sense that you aren't going to blow a test out of proportion nor give away anything uber-awesome.

You are going to save that for the actual launch of the feature, and hype that up.

Im hoping the system will be random- like you get a Super Pack with one card in it generating some kind of weighted but random reward.

Otherwise, most folk will know what they're getting before they even log in.

Most folks probably don't even know about Freebie Friday yet... I only knew about it because I watched that part of the Pummit video, and then I stumbled across a thread talking about what people got (the OP thought it was randomly selected for each person).

When people actually learn about it, I'd bet most people still wouldn't know what it is until they checked the store themselves... the people that frequent the boards probably will know before log in, but we're a minority in the playerbase.
