After people see The Avengers, fair warning to the Devs...

And why do I put that in the title?

Go and see the movie. Go and see something that happens in the film that I will simply call a zone event and then ask if you want to see something like that in the game.

Maybe not to the same scale and technical level, but in the way it's structured and the way it responds to a group of heroes and not just one.

People will want to have something like this, I think. But like I say, when you get to go see it (this includes you, Devs) cast a thought to if you'd want to see something with the zone event structure I mention and I think you'll find a lot of people will want it.

Fair warning, like I said. Feel free to respond if you've already seen the movie or after you do.

What exactly is the difference between what happened in the movie...and what happens during a Ritki invasion?

No spoilers. If you haven't seen it, I won't spoil it. If you have, then you know the particulars of the structure.

No, I don't. I don't want to see zone events at all, and go to great lengths to avoid them when I'm forced to be in the same zone as one. About the only "zone event" I've ever enjoyed is the Rikti invasion phase with the IUDs, just because I can fight the bombs by myself.

And the Praetorian ones which happen in a specific location.

Zone events are fine as long as either specific locations or the main system behind the zone ala Recluse's Victory.

I have not yet seen Avengers though

Zone events are great fun, but if we're going to take stuff from the Avnegers, then I want to be able to do this in a mission:

It's such as Scrapper way of solving problems

Although I'm not sure how a situation like that could really be worked into a storyline when we have Incarnte levels of power

The Avengers?

***SPOILERS***

You mean the movie were Nemesis (I won't be bullied! I am a god!) tricks an advanced alien race called the Rikti into invading Earth by opening a portal in Paragon City? Where the Earth's mightiest heroes gather around two teams, one on the ground led by pain-in-the-*** demigod Statesman (doth thou mother know you weareth her drapes?), hoping to distract the aliens long enough for the second team, led by billionaire playboy Hero 1 (sober long enough to put his father's magic swor-- erm, power-armor into good use), to go through the aliens' portal and nuke the aliens from the other side?

***NO MORE SPOILERS***

Yes, that movie sounds familiar

This might all look cool while you're fighting, but traveling around from mission to mission tied to a chair would be just a tad silly.

You have a point, though for different reasons than my own. I like the Praetorian events mostly because they aren't thrust upon me when I don't want to participate just because I have business in the zone. I also like them because they're technically possible to do with just myself and a few of my friends, and I don't need the whole zone to participate or, as is more often the case, get people from all over the server to the zone in the first place. Yeah, nothing more fun than a Banner event when I one other person are in the zone, I tell ya!

Zone events also REALLY bug me because enemies in them are always real-level 30s, even if they use GM code to scale. The trouble is that when I attack them, I scale up to 30 and deal damage based on that. But my damage and accuracy mods at level 30 are crap because I'm expected to be using SOs, which my level 10 tosser in Port Oaks can't have. Also, the array and strength of enemy powers is appropriate to level 30, so they hit somewhat harder and with nastier effects than your common level 10 lowlife would.

My low-level Beast Mastermind is damn near unstoppable against ordinary content. I can take on things I really shouldn't have any place attacking and still win if I play smart. As soon as Nemesis soldiers show up, a couple of white-con minions and a yellow-con lieutenant wipe my henchmen within 15 seconds and floor me within another 10 after that, and this is with my trying to keep them alive. I'm sure I'll kick their ***** once I have all six henchmen, both upgrades, most of my secondary, lots of slots and decent enhancements, but at level 10? That's not a lot of fun.

And yet these events keep happening in level 5-9 zones and level 10-15 zones.

Wow, I think I just started the biggest killjoy thread of the week. Excuse me for taking something that I thought was fun and exciting and interesting and saying 'I thought this was cool, it'd be great to emulate that'.

If you go see the film, enjoy it. I sometimes think the views on these forums are so narrow I'd have trouble finding room for a thread to go through the eye of a needle with them around. It was just a fun idea. Continue to rain on the parade, it's apparently what people like to do to pass the time here, depending on what way the wind's blowing.

Actually, related to that, I'm surprised that they haven't made an /e sitchairtied emote for hostages, instead of the trembling one - it could work like the one where NPCs stand or sit on a crate, which then disappears when they become active.

You also posted this at a time when an incredibly annoying, largely generic event is going on, one which has the propensity to kill you if you go AFK outside, remove spawns you need for hunt missions and poise you against enemies who outclass you greatly. Because this is pretty much the kind of events we've seen since I10, Praetoria excluded, and they have failed to impress since then.

And it's a real waste, to be honest. A Nemesis-styled event that's just a blunt head-on assault just seems out of character for the guy. Someone suggested suddenly having all civilians pull Nemesis rifles and revealing they were Automatons all along, now THAT would have been more his style. Still out of character, but more his style. Probably still as boring to play, too.

I'm just going on experience from previous holiday events involving groups killing GMs but by next week I'm pretty sure the number of GM Nemesis killed will be in the single digits per day when summed up across all servers. So game disrupting zone event that has no point after the first couple of days.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm going to take a stab in the dark here:

Unless the scene you're referring to involved the Avengers going to an empty warehouse/office, encountering stationary groups of enemies and then standing next to them, repeating the same attacks over and over until they fell over, we can't do it with this game.

Want to throw a truck at someone? Forget about it. Get knocked through a building? Nope. Fastball Special? Can't do it. Aerial dogfights like Iron Man 2? You must be kidding. No chair fights. No grappling. No archers or pistol wielders that are also competent hand to hand fighters.

We'll never be as cool as a movie because our eight year old game and combat system is so slow and primitive we can't even move and fight at the same time. Comparing CoH to a superhero movie or animated series is just depressing. It only highlights how limited and outdated we are. And this is as good as it will ever be because CoH 2 isn't going to happen.

I really do not mind "zone events" and I really liked the Ritki invasion idea and would even be more excited if we went there to finish them off. The problem I have is most events have no real impact and the old ones were thrown at us for no reason(like past Anniversaries) and no story to back it up. The Nemesis invasion is a good premise that has story but feels reskinned from the Ritki one after completing Lady Grey TF and unoriginal. What I am saying I would love an Avenger's like event, but with one that would annoy some players who want to do missions, lag and lack of impact I really do not see how it would be possible.

That's what I mean, yeah. I find these events to be at the same time hugely disruptive of my preferred playing style (and, no, I don't subscribe to the concept of tough love) and yet not all that popular after the first few days. I mentioned the Banners event for a reason - I've seen maybe one or two of these actively pursued EVER. Most of the time when one shows up, there's no-one in the zone and no-one cares when I announce it, because it's usually about half a week late.

I can't think of anything in the film that I would equate to a zone event. We never see the Fantastic Four standing in the background, having their costume contest disrupted by alien invaders. Its more like a single team of heroes in a story arc/tf/trial. Possibly a safeguard mission.

Always remember, we were Heroes.

It's probably a lot safer to just refer to them as "bombs". Everyone will know what you're talking about. Otherwise I start picturing a rain of glowing Dalkon Shields with timers on them, and I giggle uncontrollably.

Safeguard? nah, but it gave me two ideas:

Maybe have a machine that constantly produces more clockwork and can only be accessed after getting a key from a wandering boss wich only shows up after you´ve been at the machine. So you´d have to split your team, keep the new clockwork at bay while at the same time taking out the boss (they could give him a nasty buff or something, so you WANT to keep 'em seperated). Once the boss is down, double the production rate so the team HAS to re-unite to not get wiped and then together fight their way back to the machine to take it out.

Or Rikti troop transporters would be a nice idea; take them out to weaken the assault. or ignore them and get zerg`d.

Also, now I want staff blast

What? You don't play all your characters like a scrapper? My Corr, it's a scrapper with a range primary.
