I want to play (and like) Electric Armor

I enjoy defense sets, not getting hit seems like the best form of protection. Maybe add a little resistance in (ala Energy Armor), and I'm a happy camper.

Electric armor looks cool though, and it has a concept floating around in my head that seems pretty cool to me (either Titan Weapons or War Mace).

I am having difficulty wrapping my head around the set though. I mean, essentially you are going to get hit ALL THE TIME. So even if you get a % off of that, eventually you're going to run out of health... right?

I am able to build near capped defense into S/L and a respectable amount of NRG defense too, on a budget (no purple, no PVP). Is that enough though?

What tips/tricks go towards a set that relies exclusively on resistance survive?

Make a man a fire and keep him warm for the day, SET a man on fire and keep him warm for the rest of his life.

I had a claws/ELA brute i loved playing her.. she got replaced by my staff/EA for no other reason that i just enjoyed staff more than claws.. i got her ( the claws brute) to around lvl 45 i can say in the early levels running on resists is fine but once you hit 35 or so, things begin to hurt bad!

form what i could tell yes soft capping to S/l/E is fine..i did how ever add maneuvers and weave.. yes even MORE toggles! even so.. and i will admit that i had to turn the difficulty down to x1 with bosses if i did carnival and arachnos psy damage just tore me up. Of course this is before i learned Ranged defense helps ( like in the case of my staff EA it wasn't to difficult to get a 30% ranged defense.

If i was to give any advice and i am far from the expert.. it would be to try to get ranged defense up top cover the holes in your defense

Having a DM/Elec, I'll second this. Early on you basically shrug off damage. Somewhere in the 30s you start to increasingly feel it. Of course the answer for DM/Elec is to pop Soul Drain, let Lightning Field do its work, and apply as much area damage as you can (Shadow Maul and Epic powers) while using Siphon Life and Energize to stay standing.

Did you slot up your Psionic resistance from Static Shield? I generally mow right through carnies and arachnos.

I added insult to injury...and this sounds a little silly but I took burnout on my Elec/Elec Brute...he pretty much stays in god mode a majority of the time now.

I like defense too. However it's far easier to add defense to a resist set then it is to add resist to a defense set. Like you said, it's not hard to get good S/L defense with a resist set. I believe a S/L capped /Electric will be more durable then most defense based characters in general. I haven't build an /Electric yet, but I have a SS/Fire brute who has about 32% S/L defense, and she is very durable. I think you will find a S/L capped /Electric to be plenty durable. This is aided by the fact that a lot of high level damage is Energy and Psi, /Electric caps out energy resist, and has one of the best resists vs Psi.

Defense is a nice addition to ELA, but I never explicitly build for it to the soft cap. The lack of DDR allows it to be stripped away far too easily, especially in high end content where many debuffs are auto-hit and all of a sudden your massive investment is largely useless.

#1-- The most important thing you can do is to learn how to use and socket Power Sink and Lightning Field. Both should be capped for endurance modification, and take an Alpha slot that further buffs end-mod (I love Musculature Radial and Agility Core for these builds). This combination will allow you to survive league size spawns on Lambda or UG without much hassle. Power Sink IS your alpha move-- when you finish with one spawn and are low on endurance you refill your endurance on the next spawn and an alpha while neutering their damage output. This works because Lightning Field constantly saps and the foes are locked into using their weakest attacks.

#2-- Get defense without gimping yourself for it. 15% defense to all can be had with nominal investment (CJ, Weave, Steadfast, Glad's Armor). Additional SM/L can be had if it fits your build.

#3-- Build for recharge. This lets you get lean heavily on Power Sink for sapping and Energize for near permanent regeneration or quicker spot healing.

#4-- Take Power Surge and Burnout. You can have 7 minutes of g-d mode with this comnination and Eye of the Magus. Learn how to time Power Sink with the crash of Power Surge to negate the loss of endurance.

Why not build the best of both worlds? Dusted off my old fire/ela brute who survived well enough with resists and no mitigation, unless you want to call draining endurance mitigation... With help from agility alpha and brute's fury, he's able to cap S/L and melee without gimping damage, speed or endurance. Here's what my current Staff brute is working towards, yes it's expensive, but you're only aiming for defenses at this time:

I based my TW/Elec brute off a build someone else posted around here. If interested, I'll find it for you. I made only minor tweaks to their build, like removed all the purple sets they used in favor of cheaper sets and split up the Brute ATO 3x3 into two different powers to get the double def bonuses. I then catalyzed the ATO's and used ENH boosters to two-slot Hasten and a couple of other things.

At any rate, when all was finished, prior to Incarnate powers, I had:

46% +DEF to Melee
56% +DEF to S/L
Many of the other types/positionals in the 20's or higher.

Throw in just one attack from Defensive Sweep and you end up with +62% DEF to Melee and +71% to Smashing (Lethal unaffected by Defensive Sweep).

You've also got 60% +RES S//L and of course 90%+ RES to Energy as well.

This was my first Electric Armor anything and I have been very happy with the performance of the toon as I've gone through all the iTrial content. Its very nice to see all the "Deflected" when tanking AV's from all the +DEF. The important thing with /Elec I think is to ensure you take a primary with a +DEF attack in your chain and spam it often. That plus high recharge and you'll be extremely robust in the later levels of the game.

The Damage Aura from Lightning field, under full Fury, is nothing to sneeze at either. Plus a heal and END recovery power makes it a lot like a tougher /Fire brute for comparison purposes.

It depends how you play and what you want to accomplish...

Electric is an overall good set when you take everything into account. I personally like to push the limits with my builds and make a character that can withstand just about any enemy group at 8/+1 or so. With ELA, I found this was more difficult to do that with the other sets I've gotten to max level(WP, SD, and Regen). I found that I mostly relied on my brute's speed of killing to fill up and use inspirations to max out defense, rather than relying on my resistance and fairly long recharge heal.

You're absolutely right that having the meager overall resistance electric has isn't enough to keep you alive in extreme situations.(Or anything above a handful of enemies.) Even when going against large groups of energy dealing enemies, I found the resistance was over-rated. I still needed to pop purples to survive. I had roughly max smash/lethal defense, but that didn't matter when facing other types of damage.(Psi, fire, etc.)

If you absolutely want an electric armor character, go for it. But it's going to much more slow going until you get some defense built in, and most importantly, your heal. Once you get those, you will have an interesting character that can't be end drained, does aoe damage nonstop, can sap, heal, and look pretty cool doing so. It's sort of a niche set which will likely make you happy if you have a concept and look in mind.

Good luck!

Or of course you can pair it with a set which covers its weaknesses and whose weaknesses it covers. I was actually just trying to get a heal and endurance gain which were up sufficiently often that I would not have to take a break every pull or so when I paired Dark Melee with Electric Armor and wound up with something much better than I planned for. As example, in getting my Ten Times the Victor badge, everyone else died multiple times whereas my brute came through without being put down once. 90% energy resistance and a healing attack that is up every 3 seconds is handy.

Totally agree there, I have a claw/elec brute which is my main incarnate and a staff/elec currently at lvl 38. I can usually run the most content on /x8 without any problems at all.

Electric is pretty much a self contained set... almost anything you want for survivability can be found there. It's a go-go, not cry-cry Armor:

You're getting good across the board resistance (Toxic being your hole); Power Surge alleviates that making your almost invulnerable to everything except Psi (moderate protection and Toxic (great protection)

[Coupling it with Kinetic Melee, Soul Mastery, Void Judgement and/or Paralytic Interface will make you the envy of your friends and neighbors (Damage debuffs + Elec's resists). Barrier Destiny wants to be your friend (with benefits)]

You get a solid utility tool in Power Sink; slotted properly, it transforms from a 'need END now!' button to a incapacitate mobs tool (30 seconds slotted; a little less with Hasten)

[See Lightning Field notes below]

Some of the damage that you'll end up taking can be offset with Energize

[Combine with Health and Energy Mastery (slotted for Regen and Regen set bonuses) and/or Rebirth Destiny if you really want to maximize]

Any Fury-maxed, damaged buffed damage Aura is going to make you a happy camper; Lightning Field is no exception. And it has low-grade sapping power.

[Use it (and Power Sink) with Electric Melee, Agility (or Musculature) Alpha and/or Clarion Destiny to maximize]

If you're still looking for that ol' defensive feeling; try using Staff, Titan, Katana or even (to a limited extent) Dark and Diamagnetic Interface. IO set slotting and Barrier Destiny are also great tools.

Demonic Aura and Force of Nature are nice crashless ways to supplement your set.

And almost all Lore Support pets will add something to your survivability.

Apparently, I play "City of Shakespeare"
*Arc #95278-Gathering the Four Winds -3 step arc; challenging - 5 Ratings/3 Stars (still working out the kinks)
*Arc #177826-Lights, Camera, Scream! - 3 step arc, camp horror; try out in 1st person POV - 35 Ratings/4 Stars

I never had issues with my SS/Elec...and I've been debating pairing TW or Staff with Elec....its a great set with many tools...add some defense, and you're golden.

Don't I know you???

Staff/Electric is an _AMAZING_ combo if you slot your set bonuses for both +Recharge and +DEF. Using the right Form you all but eliminate any END issues, and you've got Sink there to back you up if you do. I've been using the build below and am thinking about removing Superior Conditioning and perhaps the Epic pool altogether. You just don't need it even with your attack chain going non-stop.

Probably the most fun I've had playing a Brute in a long time. I enjoyed my TW/Elec also but it felt, well...ponderous. Comparing Staff/ to TW/ is a bit like comparing Ninja Sword to Broadsword.

Highly recommend you give this a try. Softcapped S/L/M, high recharge and great END recovery.

It is good to hear that Staff Electric is as good as I thought it would be. I had made the following comment over in the Scrapper forum:

Quote:
I am beginning to wonder if Electric Armor is not the best secondary for for Staff Fighting. This may be "grass is greener" buyer's regret for having gone Willpower (Edit: Let me note I am very happy with Willpower), but look at what Electric Armor brings to the table: a damage aura, decent psionic resist, a heal, endurace cost reduction, recharge boost, endurance gain (self)/drain (enemies), and you're basically immune to energy attacks and endurance drain.

Running Form of the Mind in combination with Lightning Reflexes is like have 1.6 recharge reduction SOs slotted. If you add in Hasten it is like having 3.7 recharge SOs slotted while ignoring ED. And this is before you consider slotting recharge reduction in any of your powers. Of course you'lll be consuming endurance like crazy but you have Power Sink to replenish you, which due to all the recharge you're packing along with you slotting it up will probably be up quite often. And for whatever damage you take, Energize will not only be healing you but reducing your endurance costs for 30s at a time.
I am very happy with my DM/Electric brute and my Staff/Willpower scrapper, but if for some reason I needed to make another melee I would seriously be considering Staff/Electric on a brute.

^ This. Add in a Barrier destiny for when the 2nd one crashes, and you can use one blue, power sink, and be off to the races again. You get bonus recharge, you get good psi resist with elec, you get a self heal, you get effectively limitless endurance. You get not just resists, but way-over-the-cap resists for most types when power surge is up. You get a self-heal (36s recharge for my build). You get resists to all those irritating secondary effects - resists to slow and recharge debuffs, as well as end drain.

Now, I may be biased, because I am also at the smash/lethal cap in my build. (Plus, I can kill stuff so fast I can eat purples basically as much as I want.)

I got my staff elec armor brute to +3 recently and I love him, very fun. With one hit of Guarded Spin I softcap lethal\melee to 47% and have decent defense to everything really. My first destiny was Clarion T3 just because I was on an UG that needed it when I got my first Destiny, but he can really use anything and be good, with power sink he doesn't need ageless, rebirth isn't really needed, and barrier either, so whatever you get is based more on playstyle or helping teammates than your own needs. I personally see no point in taking the T9 on elec just because you're already so well protected without it, but to each their own. My build I am currently using is below; all the acc I put in is because staff has no buildup or anything similar, I rarely miss anything and typically stay on the dmg staff form as with agility I don't need more rech and I don't really have end issues.

My claws/elec brute has 32.5% S/L/N/E defense and with Darkest Night on top of that, it's a very solid setup. Probably the most sturdy toon I have.

Thanks for all the replies folks, lots of information to digest here! I am currently working a Staff/Nrg brute to 50 (40 now), but I did create my Titan/Elec brute and played him to 8 for now.

Make a man a fire and keep him warm for the day, SET a man on fire and keep him warm for the rest of his life.

I have a claw/elec incarnated brute and I am currently leveling a staff/elec one (lvl 45). I love them both to death!
Anyone know if the Brute ATO proc does anything in Lighning Field, it doesn't seem to work for me.

I think that the ATO proc works better in a regular power like Thunderstrke. Procs only have a chance to fire every 10 seconds in a toggle I think.

Thanks, so it's finally itme to use some of the over 200 enhancement unslotters I have. So I assume it would be best in an AoE power that recharges quickly? I really don't have a clue how those procs work

Well it depends on the powers and your playstyle. Procs fire more frequently in ST powers and a little bit less in Aoe's (sorry I don't know the numbers because I'm horrible at math). Also to consider your AT. For example a Tanker might want to slot their ATO proc in a quick recharging ST power for more chance of +Res bonus...the same goes for Brutes and Scrappers but a Stalker would be better off slotting their ATO proc in their Assassin's Strike.

Post your build and maybe some fellow posters can swing by and give you maximum proc advice. I can only help so much since I'm more of a Dominator, Controller, Corr kinda guy.

While the OP may not be interested, I am. Would you mind sharing that build? A data chunk alone is fine -- thank you!
