On the uStream today he said he's working on a secret project for Paragon Studios.

Brutal. He seems like a decent guy and would return messages. Great work too!

They've been transferring over a lot of staff to the Secret Project lately. Second Measure, The Television, Noble Savage, several others. It makes sense though, since he's a concept artist. Lot more work for him there.

So they moved all big names for the new proyect?
Cool... that makes me feel like CoX has a lot more to come. Ironic mode off.
At least we having some recent artist that are awesome, as Dink or the animation guy that did Staff fighting.

I think what they're doing is bringing in newer talent on the established project (CoH), while moving the veterans who have experience with the pitfalls of MMO design to the new one. Which makes sense, really. You put the people with the most experience who've done this before on the more difficult work.

You can still be a fan - and you'll also get to see more of his work once this top secret project is revealed

That's standard operating procedure when splitting a team up to begin work on a new project.

And to clarify, Angelxman81: They're not moving ALL the "big names" off CoH; this isn't like a certain other MMO studio that tends to leave skeleton crews on their existing MMOs in order to quickly pump out their next big game.

I was thinking of the usual suspect, actually. But if they do that as well, it's applicable.

That was who I was thinking of also, and it scared me a bit. I really hope that is not what is happening here.

Its also possible the people moving have some say in the matter: given a choice I'm sure most MMO developers would give one of most things they have two or more of to be one of the people who gets to shape a game in its formative stages. So this could be a form of upward advancement opportunity for Paragon employees.

Supporting an MMO is something many gaming professionals do, but launching one is something a lot less ever get the opportunity to do. Its not an indictment on the future of City of Heroes if some of our developers and artists decide to work on the new shiny. If they offered me an opportunity to work with the design team of the new thing, I love City of Heroes and all but unless it was a pokemon facebook game or something I would sign up for that fast enough to incinerate the pen I was using.

Hmm... If Arcanaville soon disappears for a long while, we might have confirmation that Paragon Studio's secret project is not a Pokemon facebook game!

In general, there is a significant amount of truth to this statement. I've been fortunate enough to be part of a newly launched product, but there's plenty of my colleagues who've never experienced that.

David moving to a new project is in no way considered a knock against him, nor do I believe for a moment he loves COH and our Community any less. We just gave him an opportunity to explore another creative option, and he chose to accept it.

There should never be a concern that we've got the "B" team working on one project over another. We're not a gigantic colossal studio with a seemingly endless supply of development staff. Each and every person hired here at Paragon is the "A" team. We're small enough of a studio that we can't afford to hire any less than the best.

Plus, I'm still here, and plan to be here for the foreseeable future. It is my goal to lead the team that builds strong Communities for all of the games Paragon produces, including City of Heroes.

Not only that but he was also the one who started the All About Art type threads where we were ASKED what we'd like to see for various artistic topics like buildings, old vs new costume parts and NPC conversions(!!!!!!). This has persisted in certain other threads and even led to the Pummit-designed (and follow-up thread) SciFi themed costume pack.

I hope his legend lives on!

So will you also be doing a UStream/Twitch TV broadcast for the new MMO too?

I had started typing something somewhat along these lines, but couldn't find the right words and gave up... But what you said right there is one of the big reasons why I love this studio and (maybe more importantly) quite possibly why the product has been as great as it has been.
I've always tended to be a lover of the smaller place that makes things with heart and spirit that you can even recognize clearly in their work. I've always gotten that impression from the City Of Heroes product and from the people I've met that work there (online and in person). It's a great thing! And it is vastly different than other companies that we don't need to bother dwelling on!

I wonder how much luck I'd have applying for that project. Maybe they need a videographer or a tech writer or something.

We still have (at least) two of the original alpha/beta-era developers active on the team (and the forums, to a lesser extent). That's more than most MMOs that reach this age can say.

I was surprised and disappointed when I heard this news, since it was near the first thing I heard when I finally logged on to the Ustream. I'm glad he isn't completely gone!

I do want to thank you, Nakkers, for at least bringing up the tights/classic age costume discussion before you went to go work on the secret project. I do hope something comes out of that discussion in the future.
