Silly question about Atlas Park.

Ok. I'm pretty much a noob and this is most likely a question with no real answer, but I always notice at least one lvl. 50 standing on the ledge overlooking Ms. Liberty. They just stand there. No snickering at DFB chants. No witty RPing. No show of awesome, god-like power. No interaction with the goings-on around them. My question...why? Are they bored with actually playing the game? Is there an unvoiced code that states that a high level character has to be on watch at all times? Are they sending tells to friends describing the new trend in heeeedious costuming? Are they counting wolves for a Paragon City census? (which brings up more questions like 'why did they make it look like they die when their masters go away?' and 'Who cleans up all that poo?' and 'Is the hydra really only wolf scat?') I don't know, but then again I'm a noob. Maybe someone needs to RP a hardhitting investigative reporter type and find out the skinny on these things. It seems the other reporters are just talking to the same old heroes again and again...

The statue of Atlas behind Ms. Liberty has been a meet-up and hang-out spot for AGES. It's one of the most recognizable and easiest places to find in the game.

If I see someone standing around there, I might think....

-They're RP'ing, possibly in tells or a special channel
-They're waiting for someone
-They're looking for a team of some sort
-They got to 50 and parked their character there, but log in again sometimes.
-They're bored.

Or any of a million other random reasons.

Level 50 players take it in turns to stand there, looking enigmatic to new players.

Its a common place to hang out when recruiting for supergroups.

You see all the new arrivals and read their bios while they stand still to train. If anyone looks promising you can shoot them a tell.
You can broadcast to Atlas Park that you're recruiting, and describe in a few words where you are, and people will be able to find you.

It seems like you have it pretty well figured out!
Basically all of the above.
And, I say go for the reporter character!!!

I like to watch new characters enter the game, and see what kinds of names and costumes people come up with. It's a little depressing at times. <.<

'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.
'Don't be impertinent,' said the King, 'and don't look at me like that!' He got behind Alice as he spoke.
'A cat may look at a king,' said Alice.

Many long-time players have access to the auction house from anywhere via /ah, and thus park themselves anywhere to do their thang, and the shadow of Atlas is a common place to park.

On occasion I'll go hang around in Atlas and look for non-veteran low levels, then mail 'em a nice chunk of like 10 mil inf.

The purpose is...to make random players ask silly questions :-p

Old habits die hard?

Back in 'tha day™' the area under Atlas' globe was the spot to hang out.
No matter what time you logged in, or server for that matter, you would never see less than 20 or so Heroes milling about. I still recall how amazed I was that very first time I zoned into Atlas and looked up at the Globe. There must've been a hundred or so Heroes on the platform, with numerous others flying and leaping about. Really made a great visual impact.

Over the years though, advents like easier access to travel powers/ more temp travels, Ouro portals and numerous new zones, the platform gradually started seeing less and less traffic.
AE, GR and Incarnate trials put the final nail in the 'glory day's coffin, finally spreading out the population enough.

These days, it's not uncommon to log into Virtue's Atlas at 4pm and only see 2 others in the area. Until the DfB teams reappear that is.

So, the lone 50 silent sentinels? Speaking for myself, it's a habit I haven't managed to fully break yet. When I get done for the day playing wise, I do what I used to and head over to Atlas. Finding nobody else just standing there... I usually pull up /ah and do some shopping.

While I've never hung out in Atlas Park, you're very likely to find my characters standing around in Cimemora, Dark Astoria, Ouroboros, Talos Island, or anywhere that's handy, and usually I'll be checking the auction house via /ah and/or talking to people on global channels while I figure out what else I want to do.

But then, I've never been a big SG recruiter or felt any need to hang with people in Atlas and show off how cool my character is, or whatever.

On Sunday I made a "Clown Mastermind" and edited the bio to make it look like I had Clown MM powers, and I stood around in Atlas Park for 4-5 minutes to see if anyone would ask me about it. No one did, and I got bored, so I logged in a different charcter.

Everyone knows all the good names were taken like six years ago.

If I'm waiting for someone, or burning time before a trial or raid starts, or something like that and I happen to be on one of my defenders, I'll sometimes hang around there just to throw buffs on random lowbies. I like being a "drive-by defender".

I can only speak for myself when I say, I hang out there to people watch. I like checking out the costumes and character names, and more often than not if I see a character I really like, I'll tell them so.

If they also seem new to the game I like to give them a little something to help ease them through their earlier levels. And usually a set of halloween salvage to get a free costume slot with, as well as an escort to Croatoa to turn it in. It's a great way to say hello and help make new players feel a little more welcomed to the game.

That's something I enjoy doing, and Atlas is a great place to find new players. So if I'm not busy that's probably where you'll find me.

I don't know about you guys, but I'll hang out there now and again to show off the awesomeness that is my costume.

A lot of it is because that is where your character entered the game as a hero- a tiny proportion started in Galaxy then they return there basically to show of to those starting out.
Of course before GR came out it PI was full of lvl 1s begging to be powermissallcontented so maybe they got some peace.
Also bear in mind the entry to RV is via AP and so the PVP crowd could be some of them - well up until they destroyed PVP.
Also bear in mind some of the high level arcs send you back to AP

Deadly Doc 50 Dark/Dark Corr
and lots more on Pinnacle,Union and Defiant

I tend to run my Hero Tips in Atlas Park (as it doesn't shuffle you around so much).

So, once I'm there, I'll dump junk stuff at the vendors near Liberty, and I'll also
do a little marketing from there (I'm one of those with /auctionhouse), and once
in awhile, like other posters mentioned, I'll even look around at some of the
new folks.

It's also a quick route (via RWZ) to PI or FF or a crafting table, etc.

OMG, you talking about the really tall one with the big ball and the lame "stone" costume? I know what you mean. I swear, nearly every time I go to level up, he's there. Looking down at me. Staring into my very soul. JUDGING ME. It get's old really. I try to send him tells to bugger off, but I can't target him. Probably a hacker.

Wish he'd go annoy someone else. Perhaps he could have a staring contest with that idiot who does the same darn thing to me when I level up in Steel Canyon.

Poo-Magnet Man. He so hates life. Do you want to know his backstory? Of course not, no one does. And, no, there is no talks of Dr Aeon proliferating his abilities.

CoH has been unique in the sea of cloned MMOs.There are years of possibilities still
in such a well designed, well supported and well loved game.Shutting it down now doesn't
make sense on any level except, perhaps, on some spreadsheets bottom line. I do not
consider this an act of a company that has the interests of its customers at heart. This
calls into question why I would want to be part of any further ventures involving NCSoft.

I know for me, I might be watching a movie, doing homework, or just partially afk while I sit there. I'll rant and rave on the global channels I belong on and keep my eye out for a TF that I would like to do.

Your character does not have capped defense. Depending on your AT the cap is between 175% - 225%. Your defense is not teal in the combat window, it can go higher. STOP SAYING IT IS CAPPED! The correct term is Soft Cap.
I enjoy playing in Mids. I specialize in Melee Characters, other AT's usually bore me.

Are you bored with actually living if you stop and watch a sunset?

I love seeing all the new character concepts--Reading bios. It's amazing how many brand new characters have such well conceived biographies these days. Hearing the newbie chatter. And just seeing such a huge variety of characters all in the same place.
