Too much is too much
Dynamic IP's are the common thing in the UK, with a static IP coming at a premium cost-wise. So I'm also someone affected by the constant need to verify my account if I log into my master account.
My IP hasn't changed for over a year at least. (I found a tracert from an old troubleshooting issue from January of last year with the same IP I have now.) Thank god not all ISPs are crappy like your country's

Then going ahead and basing the security questions on the bog-standard ones banks have been asking for years just added to the Failheap really.
A pointless irritation, nothing more, but I suppose the web munkies can tell the suits they implemented a dynamic, multileveled security system (technically true)
The greatest part of the Failheap is whomever decided that forcing people to use the same password on the Forums and in-game was a clever idea. I hope that person was fired. From a cannon. Into the sun. Especially now considering peoples CCs are accessible ingame...
I find it funny that the day that my stomach wakes me up early is the day the forums are down...
At least they're back up now. Not a lot on, so I get free reign!

From the Announcements post (I'm not surprised there is no Discussion post to go with this):
This is an outrage. A slap in the face. How am I supposed to buy Paragon Points when the site is down? Billing services too? What if my account expires? Will I lose out on the Loyalty Program? This is so unfair to those that are living in areas that this comes in their prime time. <snip> Okay. Someone had to be the maroon that posted something like that. At least this time it was someone making a joke. |
Not *only* did the outage (not outrage) stop me from spending Paragon Points,
and reading fascinating if pointless rants, about things I don't care a whit about,
but, they had the infernal, unmitigated gall to wrap it all up and restore service,
before I could even get worked up about it!!!
So, now, I have to be OUTRAGED that I totally missed it! Grrrr
Fargin Iceholes...

PS> For Xeno's sake (et al), this too is purely joking... Really, I lol'd
PPS> Double Damn - I thought it was the Forums that were down as well (you know,
*important* stuff, serious bidness). Account stuff? Bah. Who uses that site anyway???
I've been rich, and I've been poor. Rich is definitely better.

For every seller who leaves the market dirty stinkin' rich,
there's a buyer who leaves the market dirty stinkin' IOed. - Obitus.
I think you are over reacting, maintenance has to be done or eventually it would all come to a screeching halt. So for those few hours you won't be able to buy points to buy w/e costume piece you randomly feel you need and don't have... like you can't buy it the next day?
As far as billing services if your account expires on that day exactly (which I doubt it does) your card would likely be billed weather before or after said window, and your account will likely be billed before or after the maintenance window if you use time cards simply buy one and apply before said date. if you need switch which card you use do it before the window like the day before. It is a few hours man, not the end of the world real or digital. |
I dunno sometimes it is hard to tell, people do some time flip their ish over some silly stuff >.>
|
Since you obviously missed it the first time, I'll copy the parts of the post you apparently didn't bother to read the first time.
Okay. Someone had to be the maroon that posted something like that. At least this time it was someone making a joke. |
EDIT: Had your second post been a "Oops, I missed that line." or something similar, especially since a few people had already pointed it out, I'd have not made this response. Instead, you poked the bear.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
I know you're not being serious, but...
...the Loyalty Program is over. If your account expires and isn't already set up to auto-renew, it won't affect your standings in the LP. Just in case anyone read your post and decided to start panicking over it. |
In order to change some credit card information on my account awhile back the tech support people told me I had to cancel the account and reactivate it to enter new credit card information. I asked about my Loyalty status and they told me the above (about the 24 hour grace period).

Every, EVERY fething smeg-headed time I try to get into my account, it asks me to do the whole damn 'Verify Account' schtick.
How many times do I have to do this sodding thing for the bloody system to remember? What muck futhering idiot tech monkey do I have to slap to get this thing to work for once? Seriously?! NC's web design staff are monkeys. One-handed brain-dead monkeys. I am honestly sick of this.... |
Um... I had this happen to me once. It was a virus. A nasty one. One that reports your stuff to evil people. My bank's website kept asking me for my info.

I deal online with my broker, my bank, two credit card companies and several mutual fund companies. All have various types of enhanced security. None of them make me read a Captcha image every time I use the site.

My ISP assigns random addresses to every user when they log onto the network, and we are required to set up our connections to acquire an IP automatically. There's nothing to yell at them about, that's standard practice in the entire country. That's why I find IP-tracking to be a pointless gimmick. Unlike physical addresses, IPs change on their own.

In DHCP, a dynamic IP address doesn't have to be reassigned with each log-in. When you first request an IP address from a DHCP server, it gives you a "lease" for that IP addresses. You access through that IP address for the duration of that lease. When its close to expiring, your computer will request a new lease. In most ISP's I'm familiar with in the U.S, if it sees you already have an existing about-to-expire IP adress (or sees that the now-expired IP address lease hasnt been re-issued elsewhere), it just renews that lease rather than issue out a different one. This is why most US users keep their IP address for a long time
There are benefits for both the ISP and the user for this, so why wouldn't UK ISP's do the same? Most often its a case of available IP addresses to lease out. If you have surplus leases its ok to let people "hoard" their IP addresses while they're offline. If you don't, short-duration leases free up those addresses for others to use. US businesses, as early adopters, bought up a lot of address space and hoarded them before DHCP was really available. Others made do with smaller address blocks and more liberal use of IP addresses rather than buy larger blocks from the US companies.
Simply "buying more blocks of IP Addresses" isn't always an available option for an ISP right now. There are still many devices in use that only support IPv4's addressing structure (whose address space is nearly depleted) despite IPv6 being first published in '98. IPv6 has a greatly-expanded address space, but if 'net traffic to an IP6 address hits one of these antique IPv4 devices en route to its destination, its not good for the end-user. (I call them antique, but there were devices sold as recently as 2010 that weren't IPv6 compatible). Until IPv6 is a reliable option (its very close- some argue it IS, some say its still too problematic), most ISP's will continue to juggle IPv4 leases rather than risk the bad user experience.
I'll tell you what outrages me:
I have no idea what the Play NC site is! The official "down time" announcement didn't provide a link, and neither did the OP in this thread! And www.plaync.com leads me to a Korean-language site (for this company, but I can't read it)!
Seriously, though, where is this site? I get the vague impression from some of the early posts in this thread that it might be a way to use the Paragon Market outside of the game. Which would be good for me, because the Paragon Market in-game is crashing my client every time.

This is the same site that you log in to to manage your game account(s), how could you not find it? Do you never manage your game account(s)?

I manage my account by clicking the "ACCOUNT" link on the NCLauncher, which takes me directly to the account login page, not the main page of the site.
Nope. |
Is that the "old" name for the site, still being used by people who've been around the game for a while? I've only been around a bit longer than six months.
|
Then, until about 2 months ago (give or take), it automatically redirected to http://us.ncsoft.com/en/ ... but since then, it just takes you to the Korean page (since NCSoft is based in Korea and all).

Call me silly, and I know that atleast Someone will, but aren't dynamic IPs intended to lessen the chances of hacking, atleast at some level? I was under the impression that if I had a static IP, then it made it easier for someone to snoop their way towards and perhaps onto my network (assuming I was dumb enough not to have a router on my end with DHCP based internal IP routing).
Really? Really? I quit!
Aweosemer-than-thou guy out! Peace!I'm gonna go start a war!
Goodbye. Not to the game, but the players. Goodbye. Everyone, remember to have fun. That's all I can say.
