Don't most MMORPG Games, at launch, have this option, for a little while? If they never had it for this game, wny didn't they? Just curious, is all.

Trust me if you could ever have bought a lifetime subscription for this game I would have one.

Lifetime subscriptions were a "new" idea a few years ago when a slew of MMOs were released.
This is partially done to raise needed funds.
Now the trend is offering the player the choice of either a F2P or subscription.

Lifetime subscriptions are a disease I hope never infects Paragon.
Used by desperate companies needing a surge of capital for development.
In the long run though, unless that surge of capital is used to create something so amazing that it pulls in just as many new subs, the IP is left hurting for funds down the road.
No thanks, even though I'd buy it out of loyalty, I'd still prefer them to have the monthly income from all of us combined.

The only lifetime sub that was worth is the Lotro one. And not anymore
Any game that I see offering a lifetime subscription that is only available if purchased before launch is a game that I will avoid like the plague. It's a sure sign that the publisher doesn't expect to be able to retain regular subscribers. And those are also the only sort of lifetime subs I ever see advertised.

However I see a pre launch LTS as an opportunity. They're offered in a limited quantity, for a limited time, and most people won't buy them because either A.) they share your view, or B.) They want to see the game live first. That means there won't be a steady decline in subs due to people buying LTS's after launch.
I also ask myself if I think the game will still be running a year and a half later, cuz the usual price of an LTS equals a year to a year and a half monthly subscription. If the game lasts longer than that I got my moneys worth. Being perpetually short on cash, I have to save up for months to be able to get an LTS but long term they save me money. I can only afford a sub to one game regularly and that's this one.
Of course I don't expect everyone to share my point of view and don't blame them if they prefer to be cautious about LTS's.
I look at it from a different PoV. I won't buy an LTS from a game after launch because that game is going to have a steadily dwindling number of paying subscribers and will be forced to seek other methods to get money from their playerbase.

I have bought a lifetime sub in a game that I expected that they would eventually stop offering (they did) because I expected they would have to change to a system of charging for fluff (they have) but I also expected one way or another the game would be kept going to save face (so far it has by going "free to play").
I paid $100 for the collector's edition though I could have simply bought the non-collector's for $50 last year. Then I spent the $200 on the lifetime sub. So one way of looking at that is in July 2013 I will break even over if I had gone the quarterly sub rate.
The reality is I would have dropped the $100 on the game initially, played it for maybe 6-9 months and spent another $40 (6 months at lowest rate) to $105 (9 months at the regular rate) and then quit. Instead I have spent $300 on the game and that is all I ever will have to unless I want one of their fluffy marketplace items.
tl;dr When we go into an MMO that is not free to play at launch it might be worth considering taking the risk of the lifetime sub if you have the money available. You are really only risking the lifetime cost less the subscription cost of however many months you would give the game to entertain you before bailing on it.
total kick to the gut
This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.
From a "player convenience" point of view I wouldn't mind having the option to pay for a Lifetime Subscription to this game. There's something appealing about being able to make a one-time payment and then never having to worry about it again. But from a "profit for the company" point of view I don't mind having to periodically pay for it. I'd rather keep supporting a game I like to play than to see it die due to lack of funds.
I simply compromise and pay for it on an annual basis. That way I save some money and I only have to deal with it once a year.

Buy enough NCSoft stock to get yourself a seat on their Board of Directors, and you could probably get a lifetime subscription as a fringe benefit. Not very cost-effective, though. Does Bill Gates play this game? :-)

Be well, people of CoH.
(Prepaid) Lifetime Subscription is the axe on the neck of any MMO, period.
I don't have a problem buying a lifetime subscription to a game I think I'll like. I don't really even put it into strict economic terms (do I plan to play this game for at least X months?), because sometimes there are benefits besides just playing the game. For CoX, for instance, a lifetime subscription would also mean being able to diligently collect veteran's rewards without having to worry about ongoing payments. (At least prior to Freedom.)
The one thing I won't do is consider a lifetime subscription based on the perks supposedly offered to the lifetime subscriber base, especially if there's a suggestion that there will be more 'exclusive' perks coming down the road. When I read something like that, I know it's marketing-speak, since the economics of lifetime subscriptions absolutely do not support spending valuable developer time on content that you'll never get new money for.

Pauper
As others have said.
For users, lifetime subs can be a great thing.
You can basically play all you want. Whenever you want, till the game shuts down.
For the company? They're a pyrrhic bargain.
They can rack up lots of capital quick.
However, they can stymie an avenue for future revenue (ongoing subscription fees).
Also, retroactively offering lifetime subs can (and does) send the wrong message to the community. It's seen as a cash grab and a sign the devs have lost confidence in the game's ability to continue generating stable revenue.
Basically, if something like that happens here, it's probably a sign of the end.
You can buy a year subscription right? And if the doctors gave you 10 months to live then you would have a lifetime subscription. So you see, lifetime subscriptions are available. The real question is why they are only given to some. This is fundamentally unfair.

Another bad sign is life players selling their accounts. A new player can buy the lifetime account , the old player gets money back, and the game gets no money from the new player. Just do a google search for WTS (game) lifetime account.
The holiday deal mentioned before is pretty good. Sometimes you can get a good deal with time cards
