Well maybe if he farms them as kill-alls with his difficulty setting cranked up to like +0/8 then I could see getting a purple out of that a few times a week. I doubt he gets a purple -every- time like that though. I'd pretty much have to see pics to believe that.

I've gone weeks without getting one, then in a span of 4 days I'll get 5 or 6, yet I have toons such as my Elec/SD brute that has gone through literally tens of thousands of bad guys and has never gotten one, although he gets a lot of Respec recipes.
Then I've heard players that have gotten two on one mission.
Who do I have to *&^% around here to get more Targeted AoE recipes added?

It is just plain random luck.
I was running a mission with my son. Set to x8 and was just us 2. Back to back groups he pulled a purple recipe. And before we finished the mission, he also pulled a Respec recipe.
The most classic though is what I did one night when we were running missions with my SG. I had the audacity to make the statement. I haven't gotten a purple in a long time. I will get one this mission. The very next group I got my purple. From that point forward when we run missions it is always...my turn to get a purple...no..no...it is my turn...and so on between all of us. You have got to love people that just love running together.

Random is random, sadly. I've gotten two of the exact same purple recipe within an hour of eachother, one during a tip mission and one during a BAF trial run. Similarly, I've never gotten a respec recipe once, at all.

Sounds like observational bias to me....
In almost 5 years I have gotten maybe 5 purples. That's one per year, lol. They're random. Nuff said.
I've had five purple recipes drop for me, ever, since inventions were introduced to the game. They're called "very rare" drops for a reason.
That total does include the two purples I got in one night (five level 50 tips at +2/x6) last week. So yes, random is random.
FUN FACT: That burst of light when you level up is actually the effectiveness escaping from your enhancements all at once.

I got 10 purples in 32 calendar days back in the days of "Unyielding" difficulty -- hanging out with friend's level 50's, levelling my new blaster to 50 and then running around to see what I could do solo. (Yeah, 32 days -- couldn't have been 30 or 31 days and "a month."
)I completely stopped counting purples on my main character, who's closing in on 5000 hours of play and something like 17 million SG prestige -- so that's a LOT of defeats. I don't farm per se, but I play all sorts of different content -- A LOT.
I got two purples within 2 hours running radios with friends last night -- one on a 50 helping them level, then on my 39th SoA when they were helping me! But before that...wow. Think it was mid-December when I last got one. Purples are indeed random but seems like they arrive in small groups with long droughts in between, at least for me.

I finally got a purple on my Elec/SD Brute. Today's haul netted me three total:
Absolute Amazement, Fortuna Hypnosis and Coercive persuasion all procs.

I have to admit that for the last couple of weeks I have been on the edge of starting an "Am I the only one not getting purple drops anymore?" thread.
Deep down I know I've just been unlucky but when you're in the midst of long "not-purple patch" you find yourself wondering if the game has changed.
I'll just keep plugging away and hopefully the purples will return.

When I was running tips on a regular basis I was finding at least 1 purple recipe every couple of weeks. That was using two lvl 50 characters one after the other, set at +0 x1, and stealthing to the objectives. I do consider myself pretty lucky on purple drops overall, but I've had better drop rates by far on tips than other content. I know, random is random and all that, but still that's been my experience with purples and tips.
I tend to get purple drops in clumps. I'll get three or four in a couple of days and then nothing for a couple months. Luck is a finicky mistress.

I get about one every 4 days of farming.
But i have had some amazing runs and some horrible droughts.

It is pure chance/ luck on the purple drops. My best group of drops happened back when Cims was a new shiny zone. I was running on lowest setting with my corrupt doing one of the timed mish just killing time. In 1 group of 3 baddies I got a purple & a respect. I was WOW nice 2 out of 3 for great drops. The next group of 3 dropped another purple on the 1 st kill so it ended up 3 out of 4 kills great drops. I then went 3 years without a purple drop. I think the game put me in timeout for that.
