all my characters locked.

okay, so i came back to CoH some time ago as a free to play player and unlocked 4 slots on my main server (at the time). After a few weeks of playing, i decided to go VIP for a while, just because i enjoyed all the new content.

Now i face a problem with my characters being locked. You see, i moved them to a more populated server during my VIP time, and now that im just premium, i cant unlock them.

is there any way i can unlock them? or am i doomed to reroll all my toons?

When you first switch back to Premium from VIP, you should have at least 2 account-wide slots to unlock characters with no matter what server they're on. Any character slots you redeemed before the switch to Freedom stay on whatever server you used them on, even if you go Premium.

If you want more than that, the other option is to buy slots through the Paragon Market.

Is the server in question Exalted, by chance?

....because if it is, Exalted is for VIP players only, you must have a current VIP subscription to play there.

Everyone is being super helpful, but I rather thought the question had already been answered.

The OP unlocked all their F2P slots on one server, went VIP and moved all those characters to a different server, and then went to Premium.

They still have their F2P slots unlocked, they just moved all the characters that previously occupied them elsewhere.

I don't think this is how it works, though. When you go back to F2P, you don't have all your F2P slots still unlocked. You have to re-unlock them.

I think what has happened is either a) the OP doesn't understand that he can re-unlock the slots, and just has to do it, or b) the OP doesn't have enough slots on the new server, which has been mentioned.

So there should be at least 2 global slots to reassign. If a player moved a lot of toons, I'm guessing there's at least one or two more global slots. Beyond that, you have to have slots on the new server and choose to unlock them, or you have to buy some more slots. The unlocks on your old server don't transfer with the character; you should be able to go back to your old server and see that you still have the same number of unlocks available (but again you'll have to re-choose them).

I upgraded one of my F2P accounts with a VIP starter kit the last time they were on sale for $1.99 and when it expired I didn't have to unlock my characters again. Maybe that was a bug or maybe it happened because I didn't switch servers. I don't know.

The way I understand it is that you unlock slots on a server, not the individual characters. The 4 slots you unlocked on the original server should still be unlocked and since you didn't unlock any slots on the server you moved to, those will not be unlocked.

In short, yes, you will need to either re-roll your characters or purchase character slots for the new server.

i talked to a CSrep and it turns out, if you use up all your F2P slots on one server, go VIP and move those characters to another server, you're basicaly screwed. because i got told just that. i have to either go back to VIP or buy character slots.

that alone is enough to make me never want to resubscribe again. by locking out my characters because i wanted to move to a more populated server they've pretty much lost all my future business.

That isn't the way things worked originally, afaict. I wonder if this is new, and where it comes from. I'd ask the rep to escalate it. Not because I think it can be fixed, but because higher up folks need to hear that it's a problem.

I'm going to post this issue on the beta Feedback forums too, because again I think certain folks need to see that it is a problem. Good luck with your situation, and I hope you can get it resolved somehow.

I know you can't read this, SN, but here's a link to the post I made in Feedback if anyone wants to comment:

Post by a F2P customer says that if you go VIP for a while, and then drop back to F2P, you don't get to re-assign all of your character slots. It caused a problem for him because he transferred several characters, then when he dropped back to F2P he could no longer access them.

I realize this isn't Issue 22 related, but it is potentially a bug, since I don't think it worked like this originally. Several folks got told that if they went VIP, then they could re-assign their slots, and I think that's how it worked for a while at least.

Besides just going back to how stuff worked before, you might be able to fix this just by directing CS reps to switch unlocked slots for customers who buy server transfers. That seems fair to me because they did pay for a service.

I don't know how many folks would use a server transfer to free up a slot, so I don't know if it's best to leave the default as-is, or to make the default that the unlocked slot gets transfer with the server transfer. I.e., which default would cause fewer trouble tickets for the CS dept.? Feedback from CS might be helpful here.

The OP's problem in a nutshell, in his own words:

Yeah, I'm not sure that that CS Rep is entirely accurate either.

Once you went back to Premium, all your characters should have been locked, and you should have been able to unlock at least 2 characters on whatever server you want.

You also mentioned that you had 4 characters you unlocked from before you subscribed as a VIP, so I'm guessing you had slots unlocked on that original server. Now, if you moved all 4 to another server, you shouldn't be able to unlock them all. Just 2 on the more populated server (or any server, really), and 2 on the original one.

Once you've unlocked a character though, you can't re-lock them unless you go VIP for at least a month again.

Either way, I'd ask CS again if that doesn't answer your question.

well, i seem to be ignored by the rep now as i've not gottan a reply back in over an hour. so either they dont care or just hate me. maybe both.

Yeah it couldn't possibly be that you aren't the only person with an issue that needs to be resolved.

they seemed eager to help me untill i asked if there was anyway at all to reallocate my character slots. after that it stopped. and they were replying with a pretty decent amount of speed. so them being overwhelmed with issues isnt the problem. the problem is they are ignoring some one who has an issue and has been talking to them since about 10 am this morning (its now 2 pm)

Or it could be that the person responding to you doesn't have an answer to your question and had to ask someone else, possibly a supervisor, to be able to give an answer.

It could be that no one there knows and they are having to relay the question to someone that would be able to make a decision and then wait for their reply.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

i dont care how bad a company is, it doesnt take nearly an hour and a half to find an answer to any question.

If it is a subject that hasn't come up before and that there is no answer for, it's very possible that it may take longer.

At that point they would have to contact a supervisor who would likely have to contact someone else higher up. Since it involves something that would affect both NCSoft and Paragon Studios it may be that their may be discussions between Austin and California on what the policy is going to be.

It's possible that the person replying to you has received an answer yet and may not until tomorrow (Austin is Central Time and it's now almost 5 PM) or later, depending on who all has to be involved in the decision making.

I'll ask again... did you move the characters to Exalted the VIP only server?

And we'll say again... it doesn't matter where s/he moved them to. The unlocked slots are still on the original server, where there are no characters.

On my second account I got my global slots back, they didn't turn into server slots when my VIP ran out. That in itself may have been a bug, I do not know.

Part of the issue is the "VIP" slots and the "Free Play" slots are different sets of slots.

From what I've heard, once assigned to a server a slot goes from Global to Server. The VIP/Prem reset merely allows you to reallocate server slots then.

And it's possible that the person with whom the correspondence was being held works a flex schedule with a shift that ends at a non-standard time, had to go pick up a kid, got sick, or otherwise became unavailable, and the communication did not automatically go to someone else.

Things happen. When I communicate with tech support electronically - for anyone, not just CoH - I don't expect any response other than whatever automated stuff the system sends out in anywhere near an hour and a half. The folks who work in support typically are juggling a lot of issues at once.

Not only that, but the Customer Service folks are obligated to provide service to the VIP customers (their paying customers) first. One of the benefits of going VIP is priority customer service.
