SSA 5 Discussion (And countdown till its live!)
If you're an RPer and have the opportunity to do this IC, take it. It will be all the more epic. After a bit of fruitless attempts at revival, and shouting and yelling at the sky (just a little bit--we weren't that bad), and swearing murderous revenge, the eight of us came to our senses and committed to filling Statesman's shoes and upholding his principles. Years ago my namesake Captain-Electric was sort of "cursed" with a permanent sense of optimism after his science accident, so he doesn't often experience misery, but even he was grief stricken. One member of the team planted his shield in the ground where Statesman had fallen and laser-engraved a "last stand" message on it. Then Captain-Electric used his powers to solder it permanently to the earth and stone.
Then I took off my cape and draped it over the shield. Yes, I was prepared! Ha! Some people hated it. I'm not speaking for them. I'm speaking for me, and what I observed in my SG's reactions. We were moved by it. Some members even became teary eyed! I don't know about epic, but I don't believe "epic" was the intention (that's for later ), but it was pretty damn moving. (DISCLAIMER: IN MY OPINION!) |
Blah blah.... SPOILERS.... blah blah
I had a decent time as a Hero, but not as a Villain.
The combat was the most enjoyable for me, of any of the Sig Arcs. Both my En/En Blaster and VEAT SOA were challenged, although my SOA had a LOT of problems with Wade. It might be that his new powers gave him too high resistance vs Lethal and it made my SOA's guns useless. Fortunately, he was Incarnate, so, after rezzing, I brought out the Lore pets and evened the playing field.
As a Hero, even though I was always 45 steps behind Wade, the combats with the NPC villains made me feel powerful. I don't care if they were made easy to stroke player egos. After all the deus ex crap of the iTrials, its nice to feel that you stand a chance against someone solo again.
As a Villain, it was a disappointment. I really couldn't figure out why I was running around chasing after things. And the end was the kicker. I don't care what the story is, if the player is supposed to be the focus, then when the biggest hero goes down, then I should be the one to do it. They did a fine job earlier in the SSA about the villain player working with Wade. Was it really so hard to do the same thing here and have the player pull the switch, even if Wade gets the power? Then, he could have called the Aspect to kill you as a backstab maneuver.
As for seeing States in IP and Trident, I think that people need to take a valium. Continuity in MMOs is always sketchy at best, because everyone does the same mishs/quests, regardless if whether someone else has done it already, and COH is no exception. For example, if I already defeated Ubelmann and he's dying in prison, why do I hear other players talking about going after him? Every major NPC defeat during arcs has this problem, and there are some that die or are removed completely somehow. I don't see how the "States still in IP" situation is any different.
SSA5 took me two hours and I faceplanted 12 times.
Rularuu at +4/x8 w/bosses is rough on an SR when you're doing a clear all.
Be well, people of CoH.
"So, Darrin Wade - You just killed Earth's Mightiest Hero. What are you going to do next?"
"I'm going to Disneyland!"
Ahem... so that was a bit frustrating. Ironically, I disliked this part of the arc the most of all of them, mainly because there was no "To Be Continued scene" at the end. All of the others left us with an idea of where we were heading next, but now, I'm left saying, "Sooo, now what?" |
From my perspective, Statesman was "hurling himself at the mothership again." The biggest trap was Statesman's own arrogance. And that's not smack talk, this is a loss for me, but I prefer my characters to be "real" to me, and that means flawed. Statesman did what Statesman does, till the end. Salute! YMMV. And I'm sad not everyone enjoyed themselves; I wish I could bottle it up!

They should have at least pulled him out of Fort Trident. When he's standing the room you specifically have to go to to redeem your mission reward, it might as well be an intentional surprise ending (even when you know it isn't.)
Did not defeat AV at end. After several DOA's and a tray full of ++Lucks, I decided to come back in another decade or two when character is +3 and try it again.
Watched the Statesman dying cutscene and almost fell out of my chair laughing at the - well you know - "heaven" nonsense. What a cheesy ending - almost as bad as the last episode of Lost TV series. Guess I am just not immersed in the story lines anymore.

That wouldn't work for any future content mentioning Statesman - the killer of Statesman has to be "official", so that there's one name that can always be used for the murderer - events in the neta-story need a basic truth that applies to everyone all across the game world.

I ran this heroside with Agent Tavarisch (who while not full-out Incarnate'd, was certainly fairly buff), and she was LIVID when she got to that temple. Took a few insps, but she was throwing him around and screaming at him at the top of her lungs in incoherent Russian.
Then when it was over, she just sat next to Statesman's body for a good five minutes. Just... sat.
And the only thing going thru her/my mind was...
"How am I going to tell Positron about this?"*
Admittedly, I wanted to slap States for WALKING into Wade's trap, but between the loss of his wife, the loss of his friends, and now the loss of his daughter, maybe he just stopped giving a damn anymore.

On another note, speaking of redemption, why is Lord Recluse evil? What made him turn evil? What was the falling out him and Statesman had? I always thought the guy wanted to conquer the world but now I am not sure if he can be "redeemed."
**********
And I also did the last part of the Destiny arc for Villains, this entire ordeal is sounding exactly like the end of that arc. The reason you go to the future to defeat Lord Recluse is to avert the end of the world crisis. Basically, if you don't do that and you become his destined one, you kill Lord Recluse in modern time which then leads to the fall of the Freedom Phalanx and the splintering of Arachnos.
This causes the 5th and the Council to make power plays to try and take over the world which then upsets the Devouring Earth and the Nemesis Army and it turns into an all out war leading to the destruction of the world.
This sounds exactly like what is going on now:
We have the Shivans, Statesman Dead and the Phalanx in shambles, Mott coming back in DA, the Praetorian War, etc.
(Dang post got swallowed up in auto timeout... grr. Not going to retype the whole thing.)
I liked it.
Oh, and- I'm thinking Infernia might be the Hero and Villainside contact for the final story in the arc. She's in RWZ, and it's looking more and more like the final showdown will be in the Shadow Shard. Since villains can't reach the Shard via Portal Corps, I'm guessing Infernia and Vanguard are going to open a portal from RWZ.
I do wonder what Wade's ultimate plan is, though, and how he thinks he can stop Rularuu from breaking free. Could he be Rularuu's pawn in all of this without knowing it?

Having recently finished this arc, I gotta say:
Darrin Wade's been soloing some serious prestige to get a solo SG base like that.
I mean he's got SIX power sources, four of which cost a million prestige each and two that cost five million. But how do his teleporters work when he's got no control items or beacons linked to them?
okay, now seriously, I enjoyed this but it was really disappointing how Statesman died without much of a fight. Unlike some players, I liked Statesman, so I felt he deserved better, I felt that way even more when I saw the cutscene.
So after eighty plus years of saving the world, he goes down like a chump to a chump who just became a super powered chump.
Would have been nice to see Statesman actually walk up to Darrin Wade even as the ritual was killing him to deliver one last punch that would cripple Wade for later.

Cap,
From an IC and RP point of view, my character was devastated and I expect my SG to feel the same way, don't get me wrong.
But as a player? No. Not at all. Not even a little bit. Every attempt to invest the player in the events are stripped away from you courtesy of being reduced to the point of view of becoming a bystander and watching the world's most experienced and powerful hero walk into a trap like a grade-A level 1 hero.
And any claim the Devs can make about this being a True Death hold so long as there's any support in the direction they're going with. And so far I can't see that being much more than divisive.
