Is a developer in trouble?
Quote:
The devs deliberately release this stuff, then claim it was an accident, because then they will encourage players to believe that it wasn't an accident, and was actually deliberately planned, and in this way convince people to promote the fact that they are more fiendishly diabolical than they actually are. This way, when an accident does happen, no one will believe they made a mistake and will thus conclude its all part of some greater plan.
That seems to me to be attributing a SPECTRE level of underhandedness and information control to Marketing, which has never impressed me with their cleverness. It's also rather pointless; they don't need to fake "accidents" to release videos or screenshots. If they wanted to release a screenshot about Beast Mastery to tantalize us, then they could just haul off and do so without pointless fake accidents. They have just gone ahead and released screenshots and promo videos in the past.

In other words, its basically a Nemesis plot.

Flesh wound? C'mon, Synapse is the game's Speedster character. There's no way some measly missile is going to hit him.

And then they put Nemesis in the game, just to make such intricate plots into a meme-joke for the playerbase.... so they'd never suspect the Devs actually think that way.

I have personal knowledge that the Staff Fighting video leak was not planned by Paragon Studios. I've talked to both parties involved in that video (the guy who made it and to people at Paragon Studios), and we at the Titan Network almost got hit by collateral flak from that bombshell. (And no, we had nothing to do with it either.)
this is roughly as "accidental" as the Staff fighting video and every other "Viral" thing that's been done thus far.

I don't doubt that Paragon Studios is involved in some attempts at viral marketing, but really, they're not that diabolical. Even if they are, they weren't in that particular instance. It was the culmination of a bunch of other progressively sophisticated information acquisition efforts he'd done building up to it, and now and then, I still catch wind of things he's poked into that they'd probably rather him not. Lessons were learned from the video incident, though, and he mostly keeps to himself these days to avoid causing unintended fallout.
I'd love to give Paragon Studios credit for clever marketing tactics, and Paragon Studios is undoubtedly the grudging benefactor of the video, but in the cosmic sense of giving credit where credit is due, this wasn't their doing.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)

Incidentally, I could have made the staff video also. I all but sent a specific recipe for doing so to pohsyb years ago in another context. Very few people are capable of doing that correctly for an unreleased powerset, but that number is certainly not zero. Essentially everyone I'm personally aware of that is capable of leaks like this follow a similar code as I do; I follow the Iakona rule that prohibits me from revealing information about game content before the devs discuss it first or release it in-game. However, sometimes people's enthusiasm gets the better of them, and things happen.

I'm not entirely this story can be told, due to the circumstances surrounding it. Moderators, please feel free remove to it.
Once upon a time, we were testing another version of the game. A powerset was leaked (Beam rifle). When it was discovered (like the Beast Mastery - someone created a blaster AT and noticed a new set), the forums went crazy. A redname jumped in and asked how we knew about said power set since it wasn't supposed to be in the build.. Our response was "Uh, it's currently in the game" To which the response from the redname was "oh. That's not supposed to be there. Enjoy" |
Yeah I was going to say that too. Beam Rifle was another "oops" powerset that was out on beta when i21 came out.
Edit:
I think the Hover Board (used to be called that at least) was an accident that it was out at the same time too.

Technically, I don't know how it was made so I don't know if I would have done it the same way. But since I once created my own version of Martial Arts for fun, I'm guessing the methodology is similar.

Yes, this was an accidental leak. The one responsible for said leak was promptly blown to bits. Reportedly, he got better.
