SSA Who Will Die Episode 4 is live

Becoming involved with the game's "lore" has never been a top priority for me. Over the years I've read pretty much all the mission text for every mission in the game. But to be honest I've never been -that- interested in the exploits of the Freedom Phalanx or the like. I've accepted it as the backstory of the game while focusing more on the development of my own characters.

But I must admit these SSAs have been so well done that I'm actually finding myself paying close attention to the connected story presented in them. I'm very much looking forward to seeing "how the story ends" with this arc and hope that there will be other future arcs as well done as this.

Okay, sure. But you got to think that even Recluse is thinking "Wait, he did what?" and have something to say to him about it.

Of course he's an artist, he's *French*.

I currently have one of two theories:
He's actually going to try to use Statesman's power to break Rularuu out of the Shadow Shard...
Or more elaborately, since it's mentioned he's been working on this whole thing for years, it's possible he's the one who's been 'directing' the Well in sort of experiments. Ultimately what he plans to do is not just drain Statesman's power, but the power of ALL Marcus Coles and basically 'force feed' them to Rularuu to give him a direct connection to the Well and thus make it possible to control Rularuu himself.

or just read the text for the page because that TF, quite frankly, is long and sucks.

I'm pretty sure the fact that he considers himself an artist was mentioned a couple times in the comics. He likens his powers to "painting" an individuals fears if I recall correctly.

Salvador Dali was here. Malaise is small time.

Ok, I have said this before, other people have said this before, and I and other people will keep saying it until the devs start to actually listen:

LEARN TO ******* PROOFREAD!!!!

There is a spelling error in the nav text for mission 1 hero-side. "Assasinating" indeed. This is only the first of the glaring errors in this arc. It is sloppy, it makes you look like you don't care. Also, in the final mission, Malaise is into crossdressing now? A "mirror of Sister Psyche" looking like Aurora makes sense kind of (although I'm sure it's not intentional, just another example of sloppiness) but a "mirror of Malaise" using the Aurora model? COME ON. If you're not going to put these up for us to test and send /bug reports that you will ignore, at least test them yourselves. Repeatedly. On x8.

Now on to the actual arc:
Why is the demon-hunter Hardcase helping Johnny, the guy who made a deal with demons?

Malaise's death is totally gratuitous. I'm wondering if Psyche is going to have to deal with any consequences for killing someone. Probably not.

Seriously Psyche, you have issues with Swan's outfit? Seriously? You?

I thought I was playing a video game, not watching a movie. That last mission is pretty much watching a movie with a few ambushes thrown in as a token nod that I am playing a video game, not watching a movie.

Villainside I supposedly put in ear plugs to not hear the Dirge of Chaos, but I still get the song in captions. So which is it? Am I hearing it or not?

Overall the story is meh, and the gameplay suffers from too much standing around listening to other people yak, especially heroside. I pretty much felt like a spectator throughout the whole thing. Heroside, I wasn't doing anything someone else couldn't have probably done better, and Villainside, I'm not entirely sure what my motivation in the whole thing was. That last map shure is purty though.

Because as explained at length in St. Martial arcs, he cares more about St. Martial than about Johnny's indiscretions. Why wouldn't he be there? He lives there.

Malaise posed an immediate existential threat to Psyche. He says out loud, repeatedly, that his goal is to kill her. Why would she have a problem with that?

That entire scene was Malaise's fantasy. If you'd paid attention to the overlay bubble, you might have noticed that.

I thought people on these forums, you especially, constantly complained about how the devs never pay any attention to the game's story. Why am I not surprised that the fact that they now are has in no way diminished the complaining?

If you've never used ear plugs before this may come as a shock but they don't actually block out all sound. This is definitely a grievous plot hole though and I expect Positron's resignation announcement later today.

Because she's a super-hero?

"Paying attention to the story" =/= "creating missions where a large portion of the time is spent standing around watching NPCs talk."

Yep, because the better option is to let the guy who was at the cusp of breaking you mentally and killing another person off scott free so he can try it again later. There isn't anything saying she has to abide by black-and-white morality. And lets face it, prison security in Paragon is garbage.

Where's your evidence for this, all knowing master storyteller? I'd say standing around watching NPCs talk is viable method of weaving a plot (albeit a boring one), cutscenes in most games can attest to tat. But it's just an opinion.

About the Faultline mention ... that just seems ..weird, especially on a fresh character. You can run the first part of the arc at level 10, right? BEFORE the Faultline content can be even done. So are they saying what happened with Synapse went down years ago, too?

This storyarc just gets better and better! I really feel like my character is a part of the lore of the game, much more than when I'm playing the regular missions and task forces. The writers have done an excellent job making a story that just sucks me and I'm excited whenever a new part comes out.

The only criticism I have for this month's arc is the intro dialogue from the hero contact. I didn't like that he hates his first name of "Dakota". I love the word "Dakota", partially from growing up and currently living in South Dakota, but also because it's a great word. I have several characters with "Dakota" somewhere in their names. So that kind of made me mad at the contact at the beginning, but I soon forgot it as I got into the missions.

Anyone notice the inconsistency of the colored text for this arc. Psyche isn't always using the white on green text bubbles (speaking of which, it really a terrible color combination).

Also had some problems with the first part of the mish. Duo'ed the arc and we both crashed when interacting with the computer (I had lead, crashed, lead transferred to partner, they clicked on computer and crashed, I regained lead and it worked).

Still, I do not mind the more movie-like experience. It certainly is a change of pace.

Well I even considered that theory myself, so much that maybe Wu Yin wasn't her real father but CK was. (Wu Yin is mentioned as being shady about the whole thing...)

Either way, lots of people made the joke and having been part of several fandoms, including MLP, it gets tiring to hear how the Internet insists on turning every fictional character filling some sexual fetish niche.

Yes, I'm feeling as caustic as Eva, but for greatly different reasons.

Anyway though, personally I've come to love some of the dialogue tree tech, especially in this case because, while yes this is an action RP, sometimes it's nice to do a bit of regular RP/actually pretend our heroes can do more for people than punching people in the face.

Storyline-wise (blue) #4 is the best so far. I haven't done the redside version to see what essential knowledge I'm missing but for once it doesn't feel like there's much, if anything, missing for the bluesiders. It's also nice to not feel like a chump (#3, I'm looking at you).

Mechanics-wise my only gripe is the Masked Perceptor, though it is better than with Marshal Perception since the uber-perception doesn't seem to be on from the get-go. I couldn't even get in smoke grenade range with the Marshal. The Masked one was fine until engaged, but after running out of the mission and back in I couldn't get into smoke grenade range without aggroing him. I feel sorry for anyone running a stalker on #3 or #4.

edit: is Dakota Berg Blast Furnace?

I could absolutely swear that when i8 first came out, there was a clue in the mission to rescue Wu Yin in which he talked a bit and outright stated he basically found baby Penny on the street and had no clue who her real parents were. I can't find any trace of it anymore, though. Not sure if it's because it's been dummied out/retconned in the intervening years (since there doesn't seem to be any doubt about either parent in Praetoria), or if my memory is really just that shoddy.

Regardless, Penny's parentage and the timeline involved is still a little shaky.

I either missed that or it was forgotten in the blood rage induced by better than rikti drone perception. Now to find out if the trip mines will persist while I run back to the console to spawn the carrot eater right on top of a full stack of trip mines. I'll lose a few in the travel time but hopefully enough will be left for some payback.

Years ago I asked Hero 1 about Clockwork King and Penny and this is what he told me:

Quote:
Hey BlueBattler, thanks for the question.

Penelope Yin is 18. She just recently started her first year at PSU, majoring of course in Psychology (surprise) with a minor in Criminology. Even though she is one of the most powerful psychics on the planet, there’s no way Mr. Yin’s daughter is getting out of a college education.

You’re dead on about the Clockwork king wanting to make Ms. Yin her very own Clockwork princess. He however is a little older than her. By now, post 2nd Rikti invasion, he’s in his early twenties. Granted, that’s a little hard to judge since he’s a living brain with eye sockets.

The Clockwork King was always one of my favorite villains. He’s such a tragic character and while that does not excuse his actions, it does make us look at ourselves a little deeper.

I wonder if Penelope sees that tragedy in him, if she holds some sort of soft spot? Is it possible for a person like that to redeem themselves? Normally, no, because there is rarely anything to come back down that dark path to. But is Penelope enough to turn the clock backwards?

Perhaps.

Hope that answered you question. Keep them coming.

Stay True
Hero 1
Now it's entirely possible that this has all been retconned, but that was what was said back then.

The Clockwork King being in his early twenties at first made me say "whaaa?" Then I realized that most characters in the superhero genre, unless specifically designed to be otherwise, are usually under 30. I just always had this impression that the Clockwork King was 40+.

So anyway, I guess that PM lays his motivations to rest. It's not fatherly protective feelings that he has toward her if Hero 1 felt the need to mention the age difference.

I miss Hero 1. His LinkedIn says he still works at Paragon, but we haven't heard from him in a long time, and he wasn't at the Summit.

When bluesteel killed him, he was described as a "young man" and... Wait... He wasn't in his early 20's until THE SECOND Invasion?

Oh my god! Bluesteel BEAT A CHILD TO DEATH.

Edit: Specifically, if the Second rikti war occurred in-real time with issue ten launch (July 2007)* and he had died before the first Rikti War (2002) and is only now in his early 20's he was maybe 17 at the oldest.

*This also kind of ignores the vague date of it being POST Second Rikti War. This could mean The Clockwork king was as young as FOURTEEN OR THIRTEEN when bluesteel killed him.
