since we know that when you /ignorespammer a person it sends a specific petition file to the GM's Why not go through the logs and block the IP addresses that the spammers come from?

because a lot of times those spammers come from hacked or stolen accounts.

Comcast gives me a new IP every 36 hours. Most broadband ISPs seem afraid to give out static IPs.

Because IP addresses are laughably trivial to mask/spoof.

Tunneling services. They can appear to be from any IP in the world if they so choose and can jump around simply by DC'ing and reconnecting to a different server on the tunnel.

IP addressing for much of the internet is not static. So users' machines change IP addresses periodically.

More, with the propensity to use NAT at various levels, the IP a user APPEARS to original from may be a peering point for a private network. You block that IP, you block an unquantified number of people behind that IP.

In the end, you wind up hurting legitimate users far more than the illegitimate ones.

I also play another game called Vindictus, and every once in a while it informs me that my ip address has changed since the last time I logged in. I've written down the various ip addresses when it happens. there doesn't seem to be a dang thing linking any of them together. they're way off from each other. I don't think using ip addresses is going to work.

admittedly it was an idea that I tossed out to see what the practicality of it was. I appreciate the reasonable and intelligent answers I got. yet another reason I am proud to be part of this community.

I'm sure if the solution were that simple, it would've been done years ago.

Wouldn't you be pissed if YOUR IP was blocked and you couldn't play the game, simply because an RMT spammer had cloned it or their randomizer had hit on yours?

Now imagine an additional 100,000 people that could happen to, and you'll see why it hasn't been done. If the RMTers have randomizers that they use to hide their true location, eventually they will have every IP in the world blocked from accessing the game, except of course for the IP they are actually located at.

And the aforementioned point about IPs seldom being static anymore holds weight as well.

Surely a more effective way to combat the RMT spammers would be to stop people demanding payment for AE farms on Freedom.

TINY in the grand scheme of things. Especially when those lowbies actually paying are probably people who simply transfer inf from their level 50s. 50s who don't need to buy from RMT to make epic tons of inf.

Also the ones doing the charging don't really need to charge, the farm by itself gives them epic tons of inf.

Blazara Aura LVL 50 Fire/Psi Dom (with 125% recharge)
Flameboxer Aura LVL 50 SS/Fire Brute
Ice 'Em Aura LVL 50 Ice Tank
Darq Widow Fortune LVL 50 Fortunata (200% rech/Night Widow 192.5% rech)--thanks issue 19!

I saw somebody charging 10 mill inf to team on a farm. I don't think you'd make 70 mil in one farm. I'm amazed this isn't something that contravenes the EULA

An even more effective way to combat them would be to get rid of all the currencies in the game.

Sigh, for the love of... Alright...
I have Inf. I wish to level my character without actually doing anything. You have time. You wish to be paid for your time. I will happily pay you to level my character.

I have children(not really) I wish them to be watched while I go to work. I have money from working. You have time and wish to do something. I'll pay you to use your time to watch my children.

Why do people find this so foreign? PLing is a service industry. I really get bloody sick of people who can't get this through their heads.

Heck, MAC addresses seldom hold weight anymore since most of the ones on the market can have it reprogrammed in under a minute.

Just as an aside, anyone remember the olden days when people were charging for spots on the fortune teller mission so they could get that badge? I remember being told off by someone for letting them on my team for free, because it was worth lots of inf.

I have beans and I want cow. So I'll call them magic beans and surely someone will be daft enough to trade me a cow for them.

I used to try to discourage team invites on my MM by charging 5 mil in my search comments just to join a team but stopped because too many people were willing to pay it, even after I doubled the amount.
