Crazy Predictions

Random epiphany.

Ok, so the SSAs are coming out once a month. We'll see Episode 4 in December, Episode 5 in January, Episode 6 in February, and Episode 7 in March, where we finally find which Freedom Phalanx member is taking the long walk into Nevermore.

The next Issue is Death Incarnate, also appropriately themed, so it'll be coming in March.

Finally, Caesar was killed on the Ides of March, this game's Caesar is Marcus Cole (He even has his own Emperor version!)

SO! Statesman will die on the Ides of March.

Not that random or crazy.

Look at this: http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/news/n...ty_program.php

Salute to Statesman loyalty program that we get for staying subbed between December 1st to March 31st.

Sure, it's a nice name for a loyalty program. But what if he dies at the end of the SSAs? Wouldn't that be a good reason to salute him?

Yes, I made the same comment in the thread announcing it.

Heh. And because of this thread, I finally went hunting for the announcement thread.

Y'know, after answering it.

I don't know. Killing Statesman seems like a bad marketing decision. He's the most recognizable character we've got outside of the game. He's the best mascot this game has, it feels like throwing away a brand.

I find the hints to be amusing, but for the sake of the game, I hope it's just misdirection or coincidence.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. He gets a lot of hate on here but I think it'd be a stupid decision to kill him because the userbase has a massive hate-on for the developer who created him (and by extension, the character). I really hope the "Salute to Statesman" program is a misdirection.

I agree with your post, but I wanted to add that it's not entirely about Jack Emmert. The hate also comes from the fact that the character was a jerk in the Top Cow comics, from his semi-Mary-Sue status as the most powerful superhero (one that can take out a mothership single-handedly while we have to team up in giant groups to take on dropships), and the new god-like status of his Praetorian counterpart.

I personally think the character design is fantastic. The costume (though I'm on the fence with the faceplate) and the name are classic. I can't believe that neither Marvel nor DC had already used that name, it's so good. The emotional disconnectedness is interesting and fits someone that is effectively immortal, but it makes it hard for people to connect with him. But that's not visible outside of the game, so really, all that matters is the character design and the name.

Eh...even if it is Statesman I'm sure he'll be back. This game is based on comic book superheroes after all. No one stays dead in comics except Batman's parents and Uncle Ben.

And Gwen Stacy.
OH SNAP!

Anyway though: it actually might not be such a bold move to kill of Statesman.

For the first three years of playing the game I thought he was just a character slapped on and used for purely for marketing purposes given that his appearance is pretty much the EPITOME of the Super Heroic look. I took one look at that guy on the cover and thought: "He's a superhero alright, and apparently the kind that punches down walls, helps ladies cross streets, and all that getup, therefore this is CLEARLY a super hero game." So it might be possible to kill him off and let people assume he's just a mascot used until they get in game, I mean there's at least a hundred other characters on the original boxart and adverts that don't appear in game.

But I only speak for myself in the end there.

Some of the real challenges about killing off Statesman will include things like the power vacuum. With Statesman gone and Warburg reclaimed by the Rogue Isles, Recluse will probably decide now's a good time to declare war on the U.S. while it's still fighting a two front battle.* Not to mention there will be the need to shuffle around the Phalanx's roster a little, possibly BaB becoming a fulltime member. (And hopefully rerolled into Street Justice and Willpower) And of course there's updating about 50% of content that makes reference to him, assuming the Devs don't do the lazy thing and just say: "He's only dead in any content released post the first SSA!" Because we were promised something big and world changing I believe.

*The Rikti seem to be concentrated on America, Praetoria's attacking, Warburg is/was actively at war with us, the Rogue Isles launched an invasion on American soil, this assumes America is not fighting in the Middle East in this timeline (rather generously), and I suppose we could lump the big, army villain groups together if you want and say it's another front America's fighting.

Maybe they'll replace Statesman as the game mascot with a sexi-fied Miss Liberty.

Also: I predict at some point Gilgamesh will play an important role in the Incarnate system.
It's implied in the lore Gilgamesh was the first Incarnate.

Seeing as we have enough alternate dimension Marcus Coles to encircle the globe, they could always kill off this one and bring in another and attempt to shed the character's baggage that way.

Excellent! Just in time for him to resurrect himself in April as a messianic figure, and claim his rightful (???) place as the TRUE champion of the Well.

They brought her back. And then said it wasn't really her. And then rebooted and said she never died. And then killed her off. And then brought her back. And then said it wasn't really her. etc. etc. etc.

Whenever they feel the need to darken Spidey's mood again, they'll bring her back and then kill her off again. She's the eternal WIF character.

So... Imperious to replace Statesman?
You want to replace Statesman with an ancient Roman version of himself who will torture every one of his 'arrests' to a horrific death?

Seriously, if you read up on what Romans do to prisoners, I think even Golden Girl would prefer to kill the traitors because it's much more merciful than what will happen to them if they're taken alive!

Doesn't have to be Imperious. It could be Tyrant. Or Reichsmann. Or Statesmandy from Cheerleader Earth.

While it might be slightly weird to have a british hero as your premiere all-american superman knockoff, I actually think Hero 1 would make a much better posterboy than Statesman.

He even has the name for it.

Yea, been banking on the death of Statesman in this arc myself. The "Salute" announcement combined with "Death Incarnate" pretty much makes the craziness seem logical.

If it were him to die... I wouldn't expect it to stick, tho. I agree he's the face of CoH and all, but as mentioned in other threads... he's arguably the least interesting character in the Freedom Phalanx.

Plus, if I'd like to see what they have in mind for the ramnifications of whoever it may be has across the alternate dimensions, if any.

The only thing with killing Statesman off for me is that it should happen at the same time there's a resolution to the Praetoria Storyline. Emperor Cole, the counterpart to Earth's Greatest Dead Hero, doesn't have quite the same symmetry for me.

I'm still trying to figure out Malaise's part in this whole thing. Okay, fine, he's crazy. He's got mental powers. He's gone through the face-heel revolving door often enough that no one's sure what side he's on.

But, from the cinematics we've seen in the first three parts.... he's obviously working for someone else. Who?

Side note: Are we even sure that this is Primal Malaise? Is there some reason it couldn't be Praetorian Malaise and he's just screwing with everyone even more than it seems?
