When did we get limited to one vanity pet?
The change was in the issue 21.5 patch. As for why? Best guess is that with the store Paragon is planning to steadily increase the number of cosmetic pets available and as such wanted to set a limit now to avoid server load issues in the future.
Sadly it does appear to be a server load issue. I also have a character who had a retinue and enjoyed it.

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.
And you can't have a buff-pet out at the same time.
And you can't be a shapeshifted Kheldian at the same time.
And if you get mezzed, your pet dies.

But pay no attention to the mini-snowman and cherub pets!
There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.
Okay, I hardly ever used the Vanity Pets, so big loss there. The ED Patch took away multiple Controller pets back in the day, so I understand that.
But the Buff Pets I have out a lot. Does this mean no Temp Pets like Shivans? And the Buff Pet croaks if I get mezzed?
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."

These are good arguments about it. I didn't think about the issue of being mezzed dropping the toggle, or kheldians, which could be an issue for the buff pets. Granted the buff pets don't do much, but they do do something. Maybe they need to separate out the buff pets from the vanity pets. Make the buffs summons like they were before, and keep the vanity pets limited to one.

I think it was ridiculous of them to add the buff pets to this. I hated this in beta.

I don't see why they needed to add the buff pets to it when a sneeze kills them...
Well, it's because if you're standing around Ms. Liberty with all your pets out, there are no sneezes to kill them off, but the server load is still there.

I too am seriously against the buff pets being included on this list.
Yep, they die easy, and yep the bonus isn't all that much, but consider this:
The defense pet is 3% - the same amount that ppl will pay 2B+ for in IO-form.
No question, the IO has more going for it, but I have several characters (including
a PB) that use those pets, and once again, this is yet another dev change that
was poorly thought out, and even more poorly implemented.
I'm fine with a Vanity pet limit, but functional combat pets? No. Hell No.

I've been rich, and I've been poor. Rich is definitely better.
Light is faster than sound - that's why some people look smart until they speak.
For every seller who leaves the market dirty stinkin' rich,
there's a buyer who leaves the market dirty stinkin' IOed. - Obitus.
another advantage is that little buffing pet will also take some aggro and give up it's existence for you

When you're that much of a lowbie, drifting around in a notoriously fragile form every little bit helps. Even something as small as the buff pet can make a difference.
And that's not even getting into plain issues of fairness. No other AT has to deal with limitations that harsh... It's not right that PBs and 'Shades have to.

That chick what plays the bird-things...
I am more annoyed that Vanity pets, which have no real function beyond fluff or RP, disappear if you turn on Walk. Seriously Devs?
"Life is what happens when you are making other plans"
This was address on one of the UStreams. A pet takes as much toll on the servers as a player. This solution is a temporary thing, while they work on making it so you can have a Buff/Vet Pet and Vanity Pet.
