16 cores anyone?
No animals were harmed in the making of those flops.

Do you mean flops as in going to fail? Or flops as in processing cycles. I can't tell.
I believe that he may be referring to the server hamsters; no hamsters were harmed with running at that high of a speed. Luckily, none of the hamsters were fat, and therefore did not fall over from heart attacks, etc.
I find your lack of signature disturbing.
what am I going to do w/ all these cores!?
Can't wait for one in a laptop.

Besides heat a room? Not a lot.
If you don't mind burning off "Little afocks and the twins" and having like 45 minute battery life.
It's still faster to run a GPU client if you have anything newer than a GTX260.
I'm interested in how GPUs and CPUs will be used by games more than anything else, because it will allow individual parts of the game to have a single processor devoted to it which will be awesome.
16 cores could be useful to me when doing 3D rendering. Not much else as most stuff not build for multithreaded stuff.
I can see people who are building virtual machine servers wanting these though.

It's an Opteron, designed for servers. Unless the games are designed to use the extra cores it is a waste. Clock speed counts more in games.

When they can do that ON THE LAPTOP alone, then it'll be impressive. Rendering the frames on 4 other computers and sending them to the laptop to be displayed makes the laptop nothing more than a glorified monitor.
Not to say the idea itself isn't pretty cool. Done properly it'd bring a whole new level of graphical quality to gaming. I don't expect there to be consumer processors capable of handling stuff like that for at least 10 years and gaming companies probably won't use the tech for at LEAST another 5 after that.
"And yes, it worries me that people know how many pipelines their graphics cards have and the bus speed of a PCIe-16x, yet don't know how to convert between bordering time zones."

Let me know when programmers take advantage of even quad cores 75% of the time. As far as I know, there have only been a few titles to take advanatage of more than 2 (first ones that come to mind are the CoD series.)
