The Punisher to be a TV Series
Sounds to me like its going to be a generic cop show with the Punisher name slapped on it.
But since it's Fox, it'll be cancelled a half-hour into the pilot episode.
I guess vigilante is the new untapped genre. You could classify Burn Notice and Person of Interest in the same category.

What really caught my eye there was the offhanded mention of a Spectre TV series in development. I mean, wow! That couldn't possibly suck!
This sounds terrible.
On the other hand, Person of Interest is great. Caviezel is just plain outstanding.
The Punisher:
The new, laugh-riot police-drama sitcom from FOX!
Meet Frank Castle, ex-homicide detective who now delivers pizzas... FOR JUSTICE! With his estranged nephew Ricky and lovable mutt Butch, they push pies through mob-town as they hunt down Guido "Extra Cheese" Saducci, the man who framed Frank and cost him his badge. Along the way, they get tips - and tips - and bring evildoers to justice in 30 minutes or less, guaranteed!

Here's where you'll lose it if you're a purist: This version of Frank Castle is not a former soldier whose entire existence is as The Punisher. Instead, he's an active New York City police detective, "who moonlights as the vigilante Punisher seeking justice for those the system has failed." This has already inspired some IGN office conversations about whether this Frank still had his family killed to inspire his second identity. And the biggie: Can we assume he still is actually killing those he goes after, in a sort of Dexter style, "I'll kill those people who slipped through the cracks of my day job" manner? |
Seeing this makes me even more glad to not have cable.

Too bad this is not going to be on HBO, Showtime, FX, or AMC, where they can actual show R-rated(-ish) material. Hopefully, Fox won't make it too soft, too safe. With some luck--and good writing--it will be at least watchable.
It'll be an edgier Human Target, with a bigger body count.

He's an edgy ex-soldier detective who secretly crosses the lines of legality to make sure the criminals who believe themselves above the law get their day in court.

Silly is just silly. They hope to throw this wacky concept together and garnish support by adding The Punisher name to the production.
If theyre going to change the back story so drastically, why not just be original, make a new story and put on a knockoff label like, "The Chastiser" or "The Getter"?

I don't get his point; every version of the Punisher outside of the comics has made Frank Castle an ex-soldier turned law-enforcement officer before his family is killed. Then they usually jump to years after to when his is fully in his role as The Punisher vigilante. This premise sounds to me like they're going to explore the in-between years.

I think there was a 2099 version of the Punisher where he is a cop though (not Frank Castle) and maybe this is a spin of that idea.

After three different movie versions, The Punisher could be coming to TV. Deadline reports that FOX has given a put pilot commitment -- meaning substantial penalties if the pilot never airs -- to a Punisher TV series, from Criminal Minds showrunner Ed Bernero.

This is the second comic book adaptation in development at FOX. The other is The Spectre, based on the DC Comic. Would be pretty interesting if FOX had new TV series based on both Marvel and DC characters next year, wouldn't it? (Though personally, I'm doubting they'd greenlight both.)
While Hulk and AKA Jessica Jones are in development at ABC and Cloak and Dagger and Mockingbird at ABC Family, The Punisher which is being produced by ABC Studios is the first TV project since Disney bought Marvel to be set up at a non-Disney-owned network. Not too surprising though, considering the character's darker nature.
I honestly... am not sure if I am cool with this.. or if I want to pimp slap someone... Will wait and see but I see them trying to make a kinder gentler Frank Castle, and I don't like that idea at all.
