I convinced a friend of mine to try CoX

I conviced a friend of mine to try my favorite MMO, still is after all these years, but it wasn't all that much fun.

She couldn't send tells to me, even after I added her as a friend and she added me (both server and global).

She couldn't join my supergroup.

She couldn't join the user created channel I mostly use, when I invited her.

When we couldn't set up communication lines we went back to playing World of Tanks, I doubt she'll try again anytime soon.

How am I to convince her that this is a beautiful game with social people, when she's not allowed to communicate with them? I understand that having the possibility to send tells to random people might be restricted, but not to be able to send tells to global friends or to accept invites to supergroups and user channels removes so much of the experience that I'll doubt that I can convince her to join up again.

You mean the game where you can't form teams unless you're a Premium subscriber?

She could reply to tells (/r instead of /t), which really needs to be better communicated to free players.

And I know this isn't always an option, but a one-time $5 payment is all it takes to unlock tells & SG membership, which isn't a bad deal to be honest.

Alternatively, come up with a way for all free players to have access to the various communication channels without opening the door to all the griefers and RMT spammers to come charging in and spoil the game for everyone. It's not as simple as it seems, especially when a large section of the paying playerbase seem to be inherently against giving anything away to the free players, regardless of the consequences.

You've been playing the game long enough to know that free accounts haven't been able to send tells since May of 2008. Over three years ago.

If you and your friend wanted to talk you could have easily done it on the /Friends channel since you claim that you put yourselves on each others /friends list.

Once again Free accounts haven't been able to join super groups for over three years. That went into effect in May of 2008 as well.

Free accounts haven't been able to do that for three years either.

If a one time expenditure of $5 bucks is to much for your friend to spend on this game to unlock tells, supergroups, and ingame email then she'll just have to do without.

You get what you pay for.

This true? Is it a bug? So free players can reply to tells sent to them, they just have to use /r...

That can't be right, seeing as everything we've been told indicates they aren't supposed to be able to.

I may be wrong (and in this case I hope I am) but all I think /r does is bring up the request channel, and if your on a free account you can't use it.

You are, /r is the shorthand for /reply - note that Backspace by default is *not* bound to /r but uses /t

Yes I knew all those restrictions, I just assumed, yes assumed not read every sodding patch note that when the game went Free to play, you could play the game with some restrictions on ATs, zones maybe, and other little things.

For me I would rather have my friend restricted to low level areas and being able to communicate with me and my friends than being able to go lots of places but not being able to communicate with us. For me communicating is the most basic part of the game, it's why I tried to bring a friend here.

I tried to get a new player into the game, I am sorry to have bothered the almighty forum gurus that only seem to be interested in telling me "You should have known that" and "If she doesn't pay she can do without" , with one exception the Friends channel I missed that, thank you.

I think I shall skip City of for a week or six, if this is the attitude we have to getting friends into the social parts of the game.

Edit: I started this, in this part of the forum to indicate why my friend probably won't join us in Paragon city hoping that I could get help to overcome the obstacles and get a new member. Instead I'm feel like I'm told off, when I try to get a friend into a game so that we can play together when it went free to play.

I understand your frustration, but you have to understand that ALL of those restrictions were asked for by the players to help cut down on RMT spam and theft.

Free players can't use tells? Because of RMT spam

Free players can't use broadcast? Because of RMT spam

Free players can't join supergroups? Because RMTers were joining supergroups and cleaning them out.

Does it inconvenience brand new players that are nothing but friendly, genuinely interested people? Yes, it does. But without those restrictions, we'd have a whole host of other problems to deal with, and those problems would be felt by every player, from free to VIP.

I ask so I don't make any mistakes when I pass the info along ingame.

You're getting the attitude because you ignored the very easy to read comparison of what you can do with each. You didn't have to read "every sodding patch note", you just had to go to the main website, specifically right here.

Not to mention that most people assume by default that you don't get most of the chat channels by default in an F2P/Hybrid MMO. I know in the other superhero one the chat restrictions are pretty much the same, as they are in WoW.

I'm sorry to hear you feel that way but this wasn't something that was in a "patch note". It's been argued over ever since it was first implemented. and when Freedom was announced in June of this year it has been clearly advertised, not hidden in patch notes.

http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/freedom/about-freedom/

and argued over in dozens of threads (as well as ingame) on a weekly basis.

The devs even responded on 9/29/11 with this explanation as to why they choose to continue with the chat restrictions.

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...4&postcount=97

But if you do decide to take a break from the game, I hope you find it relaxing and when you come back with your batteries recharged you'll be able to dive into the game and enjoy all the new stuff that will have been added during your absence.

If this is how you act after being too busy to read a super easy side-by-side chart, then you and your friend are probably more welcome elsewhere.

A simple "Oops I missed that, thanks guys," would have gotten you miles farther than getting bent out of shape, then basically saying "WEH I'M LEAVING! YOUR FAULT!" and snapping at folks. If you're going to make assumptions, prepare to be wrong, then prepare to be corrected.

It's "/r <message>" similar to any other chat channel, except that it is directly to whomever last sent you a tell.

I'm sorry you have had such a negative experience on the forums. Many people here are tired of people complaining about restrictions on free accounts a month after Freedom went live, and are frustrated by explaining time and again why free accounts don't get the same privileges as Premium and Free accounts do. Their frustration and anger is not directed at you specifically.

That being said, there have been some options presented to help your friend have a better experience. Five dollars gets your friend to reward tier 2, which will get your friend the ability to use tells and join supergroups. Before you say, "But it should be FREEEEEEE!!!" you should remember that we're talking $5 here. That's the same price range as a McDonald's value meal, a pack of smokes, or a gallon of gas (in certain areas-- YMMV). All of those things are consumed in less than a day, but $5 for premium gives continued access at no extra cost for the life of the game. That's not a bad deal. If that's too much, there's still this option, previously offered, which costs less but may increase when shipping is involved.

Again, there are many options on the table for you and your friend to enjoy the game, but please don't just ragequit because people on the forums said, "Didn't you read the sign on the door?"

I have no intention to quit the game, I've been on the EU servers since they opened (except for a few days when my credit card was lost and locked just as the payment was due). I was talking about not playing, not about quitting.

Some people have provided help to overcome the difficulties, the /r and Friends channel specifically. Thank you for that, it might help but I doubt it will be enough.

The people that wanted to moan at me, I hope you enjoyed doing it so at least someone got some enjoyment out of it.

I will not post any more in this thread, I doubt I'll even read it since the thread instead of being about helping my friend enjoy her visit in Paragon city has been about my answer when I got upset about being told off.

I hope that if we meet, it will be under better circumstances like beating villains to pulp.

Edit: For those people that suggested payment options, the thought was good but she was here to try the game because I wanted to show it to her not because she wanted to be here so her motivation to fork up monies is/was very limited. I'm sure that if she had enjoyed the experience she would have paid to enjoy more of it, but now I doubt that will happen.

Outstanding! Really wish I'd known this the day Freedom launched. As it stands, I lost one 'recruit' for no other reason than the overly restricted way they felt. They came from another F2P that didn't treat the free level like a trial, and expected the same here, to just visit the market if they got hooked.

The inability to communicate with the community killed it for him, even after I offered to pay the $5 to get him chat access. It was the principle that turned him off from the word go. Being able to reply to my tells, even with a workaround, could have given me enough to spin it in our favor. This is good knowledge going forward though!

Ok, so 2 hours daily downtime necessary or not, Rude and uncooperative players (i have come up against a fair few) not to mention the people that care more about proving people wrong in broadcast/help and forums after doing their own research without a care for the condescension and or insults the answers/arguments contain, don't get me wrong there are a whole bunch of nice and friendly people the play this game but you wont find them here

I was going to try to offer a few more suggestions for getting around the unfortunate but (as others have noted) utterly necessary limitations on in-game chat for free players... but reading your posts, it seems that what you really want is to vent. First at the game, and then at everyone who told you off. So, have fun with that.
