Two minds about First Ward

He's not meant to be. He's actually a pretty horrific figure, in the proper sense of the word. An idiot kid with far too much power for his own good, treating people like they're part of some game he's playing? Particularly when you realise who he is.

First Ward is cracking stuff, ambushes and all. First time in a long while this game's story has actually interested me, and the more stuff like this and the less 'go to 4 identical offices in a row and fight a bunch of chaps waiting about pounding their fists' the better.

In my humble opinion.

He's written as laughable, though, and he also crashes into the plot with the subtlety of a train after what might have otherwise been a tense scene, killing any chance of making Serene into an object of mystique. Instead she just kind of comes out of nowhere, then you kill her, and go home, without worrying too much about it.

Wow. After finally finishing the FW arcs, I have to say that however well they started, the ending is absolutely horrible. Just like in Twinshot's arcs, the story is abandoned in the final act for a set of pointless action movie set pieces.

By now I expect the poor play balance and wall-to-wall ambushes, but somehow the stories keep getting worse. With all the resources thrown at these arcs, how can the writing be this bad?

yeah, the final stories did end a bit abruptly...Master Midnight is the guy who took over the Midnighters and just...gets taken out so easily. I would have liked more development for Serene...they established she was a pretty big threat to Diabolique easily enough...then the finish just petered out.

overall though, I found First Ward to be nice to play through.

Apparently I’m meant to know who the Talons of Vengeance are though and why them being released is a big threat but this is never explained.
Actually it is explained. They don't do it immediately (everyone basically goes "OHSHIT! TALONS OF VENGEANCE!" and tells you to run around stopping them before they actually bother telling YOU what they are)

Basically the talons are... Something between a cult and and a plague-vector for the Furies. When the Furies decide to punish a world, they'll start infecting people, turning them into Talons. (or Carnival of Vengeance, in this case) basically turning them vengeance-obsessed. This will apparently keep spreading until either the crime is punished, or the entire world has turned into psychotic vengeance-seekers. One of the contacts basically mention that the Talons tend to show up to end civilizations.

He's awful. It's ironic that in another storyline, I'd probably like him. I love the Sky Raider guy in Faultline who acts in a similar way, but his attitude in the FW story jars so much with the rest of it.

Hm. That's what's going on?

That's rubbish.

How so? It's what the Furies do, punish oathbreakers. (although they seem to have gone a bit Dionysian in their old age re: Methods)

Most of the First Ward arc was really, really good. The end was somewhat anticlimactic after the buildup, but overall I enjoyed it. I do hope they give us a way to get Katie back out of the seer network. I felt like a heel putting her back after getting her out in the first place. It's not suitably heroic to leave her there. The other thing I want is a way to beat the ever-loving bejeezus out of Mother. She, more than any Praetor, needs a really good beatdown... Writing that can evoke emotion (*spoilers*) is good writing. That said, I don't intend to run First Ward much except for certain character themes and maybe to change things up.

Annoyance: Yes, the ambushes while trying to read as have been stated... Protean, there is such a thing as too many ambushes. Please use sparingly to further the story, not just because you can.

Overall, I give a thumbs up.

Her asylum has a very Trial-ish location - it's surrounded on 3 sides by water, so it's easily cut off with those blue walls, and the devs have said that another 2 Trials are being worked on at the moment, and that they're working towards the end of the Praetorian storyline.

Plus, Mother Mayhem needs a smack - she's in the asylum.
The Seer network is one of the last arms if the loyalist dictatorship that we haven't broken yet - the control center is in the asylum.
The enslaved psychics ned to be liberated - they're controlled from the asylum.
Vanesa DeVore is dead, and can't shield the Resistance from the Seer network, which is controlled from the asylum.
Vanessa's daughter Penny could take up her mother's role of protecting the Resistance from the Seer network - she's held in the asylum.
Calvin Scott is still trying to get his wife back - Aurora's body is still possessed by Mother Mayhem in the asylum.
We'll need a way to break into the asylum - Katie Douglas is in the Seer network, and has teleported us into the asylum before.

There are a few important story threads that are all running towards the asylum now

I mean it's a rubbish bit of story/background/rationale or whatever. The mobs, they're people, are they? What do they do when they're not bring all vengeful in missions? Freaks, Council, resistance, Sky Raiders, Luddites, skulls, Arachnos, PPD, all these give the impression that they have some sort of 'off-duty lives. Supernatural entities I can imagine just floating around moaning and clanking their chains, even the Vahz have sewers to mill around in. The Carnival of Vengeance get new armor once they're turned? Where do they come from?

I hope they don't make the assault on the Asylum a trial. I think they will, but I hope they don't.

They're people turned by the hate-plague, basically. (and presumably they get magical powers to boot) just like the Carnival of Vengeance.

Presumably there was an original core of Serene's followers, and then it started infecting the rest.

Mr. Captain Man, I can address at least one of your points from the first page: I suspect the chat spam from people you're supposed to talk to is specifically an attempt to fix one of the biggest complaints people have had when trying to run story content on a team, which is that only the leader/mission owner gets to see most of it. YMMV as to whether this "solution" is any better...

I got through First Ward mostly okay, mechanically, but then I was playing a (heroic) Brute. Story-wise, there was a point where I would not have been able to continue, not as a hero (and especially not as that specific hero, who basically has a psych lim regarding Seers). My character would have either stormed out, tried to find another option, had a Heroic BSOD and/or fallen to Vengeance.

I'd like to note that there is an "NPC dialogue" tab in your chat, much easier than following the speech bubbles.

Yes, I gathered that about the speech bubbles + 'briefing window' info dumps. If they're going to give us the info in speech bubbles, they shouldn't bother with the briefing windows. But then they wouldn't be able to present us with FIVE windows in a row full of expository blather that sotrely needs editing.

There's a mission where you're presented with loads of apparitions who explain stuff to you. It's awesome. I loved it, rotating my camera as one by one these spirits spioke their piece. No ambushes, no other window cluttering up the place, just a nice atmospheric sequence. So they CAN do great narrative delivery when it suits them. It's a shame that the other 99% of First Ward is so poor.

I too reached a point where storywise, my hero was for some bizarre reason agreeing to go slaughter people. I'm not RP-bound enough to abandon it then, but it blew as a story direction.

Eco.

On a related note, I21.5 has just been announced, with 2 more Trials - one of them a follow-up to the Underground Trial:

So it looks like we'll be trying to get the news of Tyrant's deal with the Hamidon out to the people of Praetoria, while Malestrom and the loyalists try and stop us breaking into the TPN building.
