Origins?

Other than your starting power and origin enhancements, what does your hero's origin affect?

Posted

Very little, actually. It will affect what kinds of enhancements you can use of the dual-origin and single-origin variety. However, it is more of a story-telling device for the player more than anything else.

the black wand and Nemesis staff veteran powers have their damage increased by being of the relevent origins (details are listed in the power). I cannot remember them off the top of my head which origins affect which power...

Nemesis Staff = Science/Tech
Blackwand = Magic/Mutant

Natural grants bonuses to both.

Easiest way to remember this is the nem staff is tech-y, and Tech and Science go well together! So the nem staff is Tech/Sci, so that makes the Blackwand Mag/Mut. Natural is special and hogs them both.

It also impacts what type of Yin-Os you can use, as well as a bit of dialog in a few quests.

You can safely pick your origin based entirely on RP reasons, without impacting your ability to min/max one bit. Everybody wins!

Enhancements already covered, Kitsune (Yin-Os are merely special for name and level).

There are also a very few (only one off the top of my head) temp powers that work differently for some origins. Villain side there is a "Magic Box" (or such) temp power that summons a Tar Patch unless you're magic origin, in which case it summons a Wailer Queen (or maybe King)

Aett_Thorn listed DOs/SOs... didn't see you "correcting" him

Yin-Os aren't particularly well known anymore (anyone that wasn't playing much immediately after the Faultline revamp probably isn't even aware of them). Yin-Os, unlike DOs/SOs, actually have a functional difference depending on origin, and not just a flavor-description/icon/name as well as what enemies drop which.

All of my lowbies now (hero, villain, and praetorian) get fed Yin-Os. They make those low levels much more bearable.

Mutant/Natural: Damage
Tech: Endurance Reduction
Magic: Accuracy
Science: Recharge

There's one obscure exception to this: if you're a Trick Arrow character without a fire or energy attack in your attack powers or APP, you'll want to go with a Magic or Tech origin so you can ignite Oil Slick with your origin power.

Well originally, before the new Galaxy City intro, your origin would determine your initial heroside contact, like Magic origin characters always got sent to Azuria in MAGI. That's what that whole branch in City Hall under "new Hero Assignment" used to be for, which is now pretty much useless, except the portal for Recluse's Victory (I think).

But yeah, outside of that, it makes no difference except what Origins enhancements you can use. And there's absolutely nothing in Praetoria about origin and I don't think Villainside cared either.

Also a few of temp powers give extra damage depending upon origin, like the Stolen SMG when used by Natural characters.

It didn't. You could choose to either side with Arachnos or go out "on your own". It gave you either Kalinda or... I can't remember the "on your own" guy's name, depending.

The mercenary guy was Matthew Burke.

In the "Origins of Power" arc (or whatever it's called) Origin also determines which of the five people you talk to have expanded dialog options.

The high level stores are contacts specific to the origin. (At least that was the way it was. Haven't gotten a char to high level for a while.) With IO's that not really that important.

I keep a character parked at Yin's to buy the Yin-Os and mail them out...

At level 25 your title options expand based on origin.

Mender Ramiel's arc has a slightly different description for the artifact you find based on your origin, too.

In Praetoria, there is a misison where you have to disarm a huge mass of explosives. The "method" used there (just flavor text really) also is different depending on your origin.

Those old stores still exist, but, you could just go to the Rikti War Zone and buy them there (IIRC, for less as well!). Probably can also buy 'em in Cimerora as well. And Villain side never had the origin-contact-stores.

The contact stores were only tied to origin in their goods sold and backstory. You could and still can unlock all of them on the same store.
