And the gold sellers are now in help chat...

I think it's more the speculation of the increased audience [launch event] that's causing the ad spike.

That and perhaps hopes of trying to cash out while there is still some hope of folks preferring to spend their money on a third party transaction for currency instead of a first party transaction for goods.

Could always implement auto-squelch. It is effective, you just have to have CS be willing to review the instances to catch false positives and abuses.

That's not a bad idea.

Give a Freem 25 mil and cap his inf level for him, then whisper him and say

"I'm going to go make all that money back in just about an hour or two of playtime. Cash is easy!"

Vir was one of my favorite characters as well. And that is one of my favorites of his lines.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

And they use stolen credit cards to pay for their paid accounts. The most important thing we can do is to not patronize them.

I ended a long-standing friendship with someone in City of Heroes when I found out her and her super group friends were "okay" with buying inf. I didn't say why, I just stopped communicating. I was disgusted. In a game called City of Heroes, you'd think people would reconsider contributing to real-life theft, in-game inflation, and in many cases, unfair and unhealthy employment practices in China and other countries. It isn't right to do this.

It's a slap in the face.

Did you report them to the GMs? A big part of the problem is that players tolerate this behavior.

It wasn't a perfect situation. I considered reporting people. Maybe I should have. The aforementioned inf-buyer wasn't actually there, which made the conversation hearsay. Those who were there weren't outright saying, "I've done it" in chat, regardless of their explicit defense of inf-buying. Their justification? "It's a game. Get over it."

And if enough people /reportasspammer those spamming player-griefers, then they too will get auto-squelched for everyone.

Devs were on record long ago that ReportAsSpammer is not just for RMters, but for players that abuse channels, too.

Best line ever and this was the best ending to that line.

and it isn't. All the things he mentioned really do happen as a result of RMT. The worst stuff takes place in faraway countries where we can pretend it doesn't happen, but I have heard of people having account hijacked and empties of everything of value so the RMT people could get more inf transfered to their accounts. And the treatment of the people used as forced labor to produce inf for them is pretty horrifying. Look it up. Not over-reacting at all.

So, pretty much except for compromising a video game account, the same as the chocolate trade?

Just to clarify something with this remark. Pretty much every industry externalizes some very horrible costs of their products. It is important to realize what you are actually paying for, but at the same time, don't cherry pick which causes bring outrage .

Might as well split help channel into separate paid/free channels. One for the freebies and the other for the Freems/VIPs. If Help gets drowned in spam, people will stop using it for help anyway, so it's not like the Freebs are losing anything. Who wants to monitor spam all day?

I'm sure what you typed made a lot of sense to you oh berry what is dumply, but I'll be baffled if that didn't make me more baffled than I already am?

Our ignore lists are only 100 or 200 names deep so whether you /ignore or /ignorespammer they add to the top of the list but if you are at the limit the one you ignored longest ago is now no longer ignored.

so say you ignored me in game because I annoyed you, now many RMTers later I go off your list and am no longer ignored by you and you have to put up with my nonsense until you ignore me again. Which then unignores yet another long ignored player.

total kick to the gut

This is the same cynical attitude that was made against the establishment of child labor laws in this country, or the slave trade, or prostitution, or illegal gambling, or police corruption. "Oh, everything is bad so we can't do anything to make it better."

RMT is something that we as players of the game can actually DO something about. There's little I can do about the chocolate trade that will make a significant difference, except not buy it. The chocolate trade is worldwide, and me and my friends boycotting it will make only the tiniest difference in the grand scheme of things. The real problems are happening in other parts of the world where I can't affect them directly.

But RMT is happening right here and now in our game. It's a battle we can fight directly. I've probably seen RMTers running around Paragon. I've certainly been spammed by them. We can actually make a huge difference by boycotting RMT and mobilizing attitudes against it. We can express approval instead of outrage in the forums when devs ban players for buying inf and PLing from RMTers.

My question is, are the people who are advertising PLing of lowbies on Freedom (the only server where I see such broadcasts) for 4-5 million a run just regular players, or are they fronts for RMTers collecting inf that they can then turn around and sell?

These days there's no reason why anyone should have to pay real money for inf or pay inf for PLing. Anyone can get almost anything they want in pretty short order, except for PvP recipes, if they know how to approach it. With Freedom, if you really want to PL your characters you can get a free account, level up a farming character on it by dual boxing, and then use that character to PL characters on your main account.

People who patronize RMTers should realize that these guys are criminal gangs that steal credit cards and playing time from game companies, as well as player's game passwords.

Oh wow... well, that's just bad programming then.

I'm amazed anyone even noticed gold sellers in the help chat, last time I looked at that channel there was that much spam you couldn't even spot the people looking for help.
