Magic is rare on Praetorian Earth, and the enigmatic Carnival of Light are among the few who wield it. A group of psychics, mystics, and magic-users, the Carnival of Light is one of the prominent groups you'll encounter in First Ward, the new Praetorian zone coming with Issue 21 and City of Heroes Freedomâ„¢. Read a little about them here in this intercepted report from Colonel Vargas of the Direct Urban Strike Team, an opposing group in First Ward that answers to Mother Mayhem.

None of the pictures are loading for me in that article.

But a good read none-the-less. One of the groups I was definitely looking forward to learning more about.

Third image still isn't loading; the URL for the image is malformed, and so is the link:

As the actual 8-arc zone storyline for First Ward is very biased towards Heroes/Resistance, I'm assuming the repeatable loyalist missions there will involve trying to carry out these plans to disrupt the Carnival.

You find out a lot of this in the First Ward arcs.

But if you thought the Shining Stars was a bad Super Group, wait til you get a load of the Praetorian Midnighter Club...

Yeah first time I ran the first ward arc I was like whoa, yeah it is a really good arc, I say one of the best in the game.

I've avoided playing the arcs in beta so I don't spoil myself before it goes live, I'm funny like that, but I must say the carnival as a whole looks pretty fantastic. You guys managed to take the Midnight Squad, Carnival and Legacy Chain, throw them in a mixing pot and come out with a group that has bits of all three, doesn't look ridiculous, and still manages to look like their own unique group. I also have to give props because I never thought I'd see a costume that made the jester pattern (on anything but ESPECIALLY on pants) look good.

My only concern is that those masks are SO awesome, and I just know we're never going to get them, and that makes me sad. I'd really like a porcelain mask for several of my toons (not just female either, I have a creepy serial killer type dude that would wear one if he was allowed) and those Carnival masks are just PERFECT. Even if we didn't get the frilly glowy bits, or the one with the big flowery protrusion, I'd be thrilled with simply the plain mask. Perhaps you guys would be willing to give us something akin to the IDF set in the near future? Maybe not a complete set of their stuff, as some of it needs to stay signature, but I'd gladly welcome some of those frilly corset tops, masks, and even the legacy chain-esque helmets, and if alternate staff/wand animations ever come about for blast/control sets I'd love to see that carnival wand available.

Personally, I'm not so certain about that. The CoT revamp and the way the Going Rogue enemy groups were developed suggest to me that enemy groups are now being designed as walking billboards for costumes that will (eventually) be purchasable in the Paragon Market.

However, I consider it unlikely that we'll ever get to combine, say, the Warrior belt-thing with the Wedding Tux, as the male Carnie in the screenshot posted in this thread is doing. A port of NPC costume parts to PC's doesn't necessarily mean we'll get to use them the same way as a critter model.

* looks at group's name, looks at masks and costumes*

So what do you call this group for our French players? Cirque Du Soleil?

Also, the name "Barnaby of All Colors" is very cool!

What happened to The Circle of Thorns and Mu though I wonder?

Having designed several characters from the Original "Carnival of Light" (in the high-level Portal Corp missions where you rescue 'good' carnies), I must say, I am glad the Carnie refugees have gained members from other oppressed groups and become such a thorn in Cole's side!

Having seen so much of the Carnies since I started the the First Ward arcs, I'm going to say now: very impressive look, particularly the darker look of the Carnival of War.

And yes... we need those masks... Sooo pretty. I've got a toon that would just complete her look -perfectly- if she had a Carnival mask. It doesn't have to be the super-duper beautiful flared mask, either. Just the basic porcelain one with the gem in the forehead.

The flared mask, I'd be happy keeping on critters, since it says "This is a Ring Mistress you don't wanna mess with, and she is much cooler that you will ever be."

Also, can we get that sarong thing the females are wearing? Because that would just be great on so many female characters.

((EDIT: snipped the quoted pic, since it was buggering up the page formatting due to absurdly enormous size))

Clear back in the early part of 2005, I created a Carnival of Light SG on Triumph, based on the idea of refugees from Praetorian Earth's group of that name, from the canon CoH story line. We kind of riffed on and expanded on the few tidbits from the mission(s) text. I think it's fair to say it was a fairly prominent RP SG on Triumph for a few years. It still exists, although it's not busy these days, and there are several spin-offs to other servers (the Pinnacle group is quite active).

While the much-expanded canon Carnival of Light story is different from the one we dreamed up in several ways, it's still close enough that we haven't had to make big shifts in our characters' backstories to get them back in line with canon. If anything, it just gave us a whole lot more to riff on. Which is really cool...as is the fact that the dvs haven't made us change the name.

But the main reason IO'm posting this is the above costumes. I'll snag a screenie when the servers are back up, but about three or so years ago, I made a very similar costume for the Triumph Carnival of Light's founding character (Festival) that looks almost identical to those. The exact same theme, anyway (jester pattern, white and shiny gold, etc...). While I very much doubt the devs peeked at that costume (LOL...), I have to say I'm feeling a bit like a prophet right now.

Anyone want to buy some lottery numbers or sports scores...?

This is mostly explained by the fact that the New Way of costuming factions is to use Player rigs instead of NPC rigs. This means using costume pieces that players have (or will have soon). So, NPC factions will look like stuff players make and vice versa (with the exception of a few signature pieces reserved for the faction or signature NPCs).

So, the Carnival of Light was made by a Dev using our player costume creator.

I look forward to their pieces that they're wearing that we don't have access to yet being released to us players.

And the new CoT pieces, too.

I think my confusion is more clear when paired with the specific part of her post you originally quoted a reply to. XD I guess you were using that as an abbreviation to the whole post, but I thought you were doing a targeted reply. Hence my "Murr?"
