Outbreak post Issue-21?
I don't always fight mass quantities of Contaminated in Breakout, nor do I get the Isolator badge on each and every hero, but the option to do so is there if I feel like it. I like that.
There is no such option in the new tutorial. I don't like that. Once the new and shiny has worn off this new one, what's going to be left? How long until this one is even more boring than the old one, because all it really amounts to is a glorified cut scene? |

Storming Citadel, Arc ID 379488 (lowbie, 1mish, 10-min timed)
I like the new tutorial mainly because I know it's not meant for me, because I've been playing for 6 years now.
Why die during the tutorial anyway? Why does it have to be a challenge? Also the comic book is neat-o.
And it's cool that those lazy heroes who tend to stand around, even during a Rikti Raid, doing nothing can now be seen to be doing something and give characters something to aspire to.
And now that the assets are there, some missions exploring the meteor strike and Shivans for future issues'd be a good thing in my book. (And are likely as this is 'obviously' the first real 'event' of the Coming Storm. Kinda like the Plague of Locusts. So next would be... Blood?)
Change -> Fear -> Doom.

"Yes, it's terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true, the bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats, and, uh, we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after." - Rupert Giles
Again - keep the new tutorial! Let 'er rip! Have at it!
But why not throw the nostalgic fans of the old a bone and give them the OPTION to do the old tutorials with new characters? What would it hurt?
Because that's how it works in the rest of the game?

Nitpicking isn't getting you over any easier man.
New players will be taught that 12 shivans cannot defeat them at lvl 1.

If not for the forums, I wouldn't have found out that it's not possible to die in the new tutorial. If not for the forums, I wouldn't have found out that it's possible to die in the old one.
Folks have their nostalgia glasses on a little too tight.
No sense in discussing this any further.

Ah, at the end of the day, this change is happening, and very soon. That's why there's not a lot of point in discussing it further, not wether or not some of us are being nostalgic (and tbh i don't see why that's necessarily bad), or some of us are being swayed by the shiny (and it IS very very shiny, I concur - if it was a proper door mission with real XP and a chance for death, and hence challenge, i'd love it).
Change is a coming, and only Time will tell whether or not Galaxy's Last Stand does its job as a lure for new players.

I am of the opinion that being short and straightforward, not having large amounts of space to explore, having impressive visuals but no meaningful challenge, and featuring the signature NPCs prominently are all *good things* for what's supposed to be a player's first steps into the game.

They won't do this because (I'm sure they will argue) it will confuse the hordes of new players that are going to be flocking to play CoH when Freedom goes live. Also, it will mess up continuity if Twinshot etc are referring to stuff you've supposedly done in Galaxy's Last Stand and you haven't.

There's a lack of surfin bird in there ;p
Hopefully people parked ahead of time should stay, since I've heard that there are still people in the Paragon Dance Party, at least as of a year or two ago. It's a bug, but a rather long-standing bug, because they don't seem to ever delete zones, just disconnect them. I think the old Faultline and Rikti Crash Site might be in the game files still, too.
|
I dunno if its still in the game files, but my character got booted out of the old faultline when I Logged him in after the new faultline was introduced.

Im still in the paragon dance party on justice server.

I can only envy one whose existence is so full of peace, harmony, and tranquility that the posts in this thread equate to 'raising Hell'.
/e salute ( ) For the record: I want you guys who want the new stuff to have your new stuff - but I want the guys who want the old stuff to have the old stuff, too. There's not a thing wrong with the old stuff. It's just old. Not 'bad'. It's served us well for all these years and could continue to do so IF the devs would just be so kind as to allow it. Why not? |
The tutorial exposed you to the main concepts of the game.
- Contacts with missions
- Hunt missions
- Door missions
- Click-objective missions
- The ability to free-roam
- Introduces you to enhancements
- Introduces you to inspies
- It introduces you to the hospital
- It shows how you can herd enemies
Is there a badge to obtain in the new tutorial? I never bothered to check when I went into Beta.

You can complete the new tutorial using four single uses of Brawl to tag the only actually required defeats in it and then let the NPCs do all the work. You cannot go below 1HP in it, so there's no danger or challenge or need to avoid mobs at all. The encounter with the Giant Shivan is a cutscene that you can run around in if you like.
I was all 'wow, coool' the first time I ran it. But when I slowed down and had a look at its substance, I saw the man behind the curtain lol. Eco. |
The new one slightly less so than the old one though.
"Men strunt r strunt och snus r snus
om ock i gyllne dosor.
Och rosor i ett sprucket krus
r stndigt alltid rosor."
My impression in the beta was that the first mission you do (up to the shivan monster) is not the entire tutorial - its just the start. After that the tutorial continues with the first contact on each side and the hero/villain group contacts (dr graves for villains and I forget the heroes name - quickshot or something like that?) and really continues to teach you about the game all the way through L15.
So really, what they did was shorten the part of the tutorial that was required to a single, very fast mission so that experienced players could get to L2 fast and then go PL in AE or run the new sewer trial or do whatever floats their boat, including continuing the tutorial with the intro contacts in atlas/mercy.
As for me, personally, I thought breakout was tolerable, if a little boring, because it was short enough to get through quickly. Outbreak on the other hand was a massive pain - you had to run all over the place with no movement powers and for some reason ever since the last issue or so the door mission at the end has featured a bunch of level 2 mobs that are a pain to take on even with all the veteran powers, I can't imagine what it would be like for a new character. So I am quite pleased with the new, extremely short intro mission that leaves you the choice of playing however you want after that.
